Chapter Text
Alastor liked the king.
This was a fact which Alastor was painfully aware of.
The king liked Alastor, but not in the way Alastor needed him to.
The king did not trust Alastor.
This was a fact that Lucifer made painfully clear.
Alastor needs to drown these hideous feelings.
But that’s also difficult when he’s also trying to befriend the king into trusting him again.
The solution; just ignore the feelings! Continue his plan.
So when Alastor noticed it had been several days since anyone in the hotel, Alastor decided to bring him a meal again.
This time he made some delicious gumbo that his mother had said was his grandmother’s recipe.
It definitely made Alastor nostalgic at the smell.
So Alastor made his way to the king’s room…
___
Alastor knocked on the door of Lucifer’s room with a cheery grin. He had forgoed his usual coat today and had a cozy sweater over his usual dress shirt and suspenders.
“Lucifer! It’s been a few days since I’ve seen you out and about so I’ve decided to make you some food! Allow me inside, will you?” He called out through the door.
There was a moment of silence where Alastor considered calling to him again, but then the door opened.
The king was surprisingly dressed, wearing his mask but he lacked his veil, and it looked like he hadn’t slept in several nights with how terrible the eye bags he had were under the visible side of his face. Several of the kings extra eyes were open so that was immediately a bad sign.
“Oh, hey Al!” Oh the king was way too happy to see him. Had he forgotten a few things? “You do know I don’t need to eat right? It’s uh, a perk of being a fallen angel.”
Alastor grinned, pushing his way inside with little resistance from Lucifer. “Of course I know that! But it is still enjoyable to eat, is it not?”
Lucifer’s smile dimmed a bit, “It can be fun, but I…” Alastor’s eyes followed Lucifer’s hands when they fidgeted, and he paid close attention to how the king’s eyes glazed over for the shortest second.
He has a theory now…
“…what was I saying? Anyways, I am really glad you came though because I am admittedly very lonely right now.” Lucifer continued, summoning a chair for Alastor to sit in and a small table for Alastor to set the gumbo down in.
Lucifer sat across from Alastor in his own chair and smiled at him with a friendly look.
Alastor looked over the room and noticed there were tons of unfinished creations all over the room. Some where ducks but some were also little deer creatures that looked like Lucifer had been practicing making.
“I can see you’ve been quite busy…” Alastor said, his gaze turning back to Lucifer.
The king smiled weakly, “Well I’m all caught up on my paperwork and stuff, and Charlie hasn’t talked to me at all since we had our little spat over Lilith…” The king trailed off. His hands were under the table but Alastor knew they were definitely clasping together.
Alastor hesitated, before he changed the subject from Charlie. “I’ve noticed you still wear your wedding ring every day, despite the fact Lilith isn’t around anymore…”
He leaned forward, “…I am curious as to what sort of wedding band the king of hell would wear! May I see it?” Alastor wanted to test something.
Lucifer seemed to freeze however, his shoulders tensing. Alastor noticed the king’s tail had also stopped its subtle wagging it had been doing under the table.
“I uh, I don’t know… I guess…?” Lucifer said, hesitantly holding up his hand and showing Alastor the ring. It was kept too far from Alastor for the overlord to snatch it off, however.
Drat.
He did take the time to look it over though. It was rather simple, just being a simple gold band with a single gem on it’s middle. The gem was a light purple color and it was honestly a beautiful sight.
“You like it? I made the bands and me and Lilith each made a gem for each other with our magic. I made her a nice red one, and she made me this one.” Lucifer said, pulling his hand back and smiling down at his ring before he sat it down in his lap.
Interesting…
“That sounds very romantic! Do you know if she still wears her ring as well?” Alastor said, forcing his tone to sound interested as he thought over how the ring could possibly be causing Lucifer’s strange behavior.
Lucifer deflated a bit, nervously fidgeting again.
“Well, I used to be able to use it to sense where she was. But I can’t sense her since she left, so I don’t know if she still wears it.” Lucifer said quietly.
Alastor hummed, before he changed the topic to ease Lucifer a bit, “Well, the Gumbo is going to get cold and I don’t want to waste it, so how about we both share it then?” He offered, summoning himself and Lucifer both spoons.
Lucifer hesitated, before he nodded with a small smile. “Alright.” He said, taking a spoon. He was quiet for a moment before he said a soft, “…thank you, Al.”
Lucifer took a bite of the Gumbo and Alastor watched, his smile widening with a bit of pride when he saw the king light up with excitement and joy at the taste.
“Oh this is amazing! I swear— everything you cook is honestly delicious.” Lucifer quickly took another spoonful.
Alastor grinned, “Of course! Only the best for his majesty!” He said, taking his own spoonful and smiling as he took his own bite. Yep, just as good as he remembered.
Lucifer let out a sound of protest, “Hey! I told you to call me Lucifer! Enough with the ‘his majesty’ crap!”
After a while of eating, the quiet was interrupted.
“Do you have someone special in your life?” Lucifer asked eventually, his voice soft.
‘You’, was the first word that came to Alastor’s mind, but he held his tongue.
Don’t be so forward, he’s married.
“No, I don’t. I never really was interested in women when I was alive, and I was never really interested in anyone in hell.” Alastor said, wording his sentences carefully.
“Was?” Lucifer repeated, a small smirk on his face, “Who’s the lucky demon, Al?”
Alastor sighed dramatically, “Unfortunately, they have been completely unaware of my affections. And I am sure it shall remain that way.” He said, “Besides, it would never work, they’re already taken.”
Lucifer nodded in understanding, “Ah I’m sorry, that sounds like it sucks.” Lucifer said.
Oh my god, this oblivious fool!
“Are you still friends with them? Or however you would refer to a friendly relationship you might maintain.” Lucifer asked curiously.
Alastor nodded, another sigh being drawn from him, “Yes, although I have recently begun to detest their partner. I have reason to believe that she’s quite abusive to them.” Alastor said, his eyes narrowing ever so slightly.
Lucifer did not get any hint that Alastor was talking about him, however. “Oof, that sounds rough. You gonna help them out?” He said with a birdlike head tilt.
Damn how adorable yet incredibly stupid Lucifer is.
Alastor forced a wide smile onto his face, his teeth grinning, “I certainly am going to try.”
Lucifer smiled softly, resting his chin on his hand. “You know, you’re not as bad as you pretend to be sometimes.” Lucifer said.
Alastor felt his heart warm a bit, and his smile turned mischievous, “Oh Lucifer, I very much am as bad as they say.” He leaned forward, “But, for them, sure; I am not as bad as I pretend.”
Lucifer smiled, and he stood up, hold his hand out to help up the overlord. “Say, I have a nice collection of liquors from Gluttony that Beelzebub has sent me over the years, mostly unopened. Wanna try some?”
Alastor blinked, surprised by the invitation. “Oh! If you insist!” He said, taking the king’s hand and following him to a cabinet that clearly had been a new addition to the kings room.
The king pulled out several bottles of different shades of golden liquid, each of them having tags on it that said ‘𝐹𝓇𝑜𝓂 𝐵𝑒𝑒’ and labels that said they were all imported from Gluttony.
Lucifer summoned a couch and coffee table, sitting down on it. Alastor saw Lucifer begin to pant and lean against the table for a second before sitting down.
Why was the king tired from such a small feat? He had previously shown powerful displays of magic several months ago.
Alastor made a mental note to pay more attention the next time Lucifer used magic.
Alastor sat down next to Lucifer on the couch and gently lifted up a bottle to read some of the labels, not knowing what half the contents of some of them even were.
“So? Which one do you want to try first? As a warning, they are probably a bit strong, since Bee makes this stuff strong enough to make even a Deadly Sin tipsy.”
Alastor’s blinked in surprise, before he grinned mischievous, grabbing a random bottle, “Why don’t we just go at random and see where we end up!”
Lucifer seemed a bit startled, but he made a grin that mirrored Alastor’s but the overlord honestly found it more cute than anything else.
“Alrighty then! Let’s have fun!” Lucifer laughed.
___
Throughout the night, Alastor and Lucifer went through several bottles of whatever they were drinking, and the two quickly became intoxicated.
Alastor had gotten drunker much quicker than the king, so Lucifer had gotten him some water to help him not have a massive hangover the next day.
At some point, Lucifer had gotten out an album of old photos of Charlie. Alastor had managed to notice between his drunken thoughts that very few photos actually included the king in them.
The fallen angel had also seemed to have noticed that at some point as well, and he had started to get a bit too sad for Alastor’s liking.
So, Alastor summoned his staff and made his radio change to one of his stations that played 1930’s Jazz.
“Come on, Lucifer, let’s dance! It’ll cheer you up!” Alastor said, grabbing the king’s arm and pulling him up from the couch.
Lucifer giggled drunkenly, “Alright, fine, I’ll play.” He said.
And so the two danced.
And they kept dancing.
The king was honestly a bit sloppy, but Alastor likely was as well during the time.
Gosh they were both so very intoxicated.
And eventually, they both collapsed back down onto the couch amongst a bunch of laughs and giggles, Lucifer leaning against Alastor with flushed cheeks and a very wide smile visible on the exposed side of his face.
“Thanks for this, Al.” Lucifer said softly as Alastor shifted to have his arm over the back of the couch, and Lucifer tucked against his side.
It was so very domestic.
It was everything Alastor never realized he so desperately needed from the king until now.
“Of course, Lucifer.” Alastor said, leaning his head back against the couch.
Lucifer chuckled, pushing some of his hair out of his own face, “You know, this is probably the most fun I’ve had in a looonnnggg time.” He said, yawning softly.
Alastor’s smile softened, though a twinge of possessive joy went through him when the king leaned further against his side and began to close his eyes.
“Likewise, Luci.” Alastor said, testing out a nickname.
Lucifer’s smile widened. “‘Luci’? That’s a new one. I uh, I like it…” Lucifer yawned again.
Alastor found himself also growing a bit tired as well, his own eyes starting to grow heavy.
His shadow appeared behind him and made mocking kissy faces at Alastor before it went off and turned off all the lights in the room.
Alastor looked back down at Lucifer, whose eyes were already closing and he sighed with a soft smile.
Alastor wished he could have this every night.
But unfortunately, he knew otherwise.
However, Alastor decided that it would be alright to pretend.
Just for one night.
___
When Lucifer would awake in the morning with no memory of the entire prior day, he would find a long detailed letter from Alastor detailing everything that occurred during the night, and a small note at the end saying,
𝐼 𝓌𝑜𝓊𝓁𝒹 𝓁𝑜𝓋𝑒 𝓉𝑜 𝒹𝒶𝓃𝒸𝑒 𝒶𝑔𝒶𝒾𝓃 𝓈𝑜𝓂𝑒𝓉𝒾𝓂𝑒.
𝒮𝒾𝓃𝒸𝑒𝓇𝑒𝓁𝓎, 𝒜𝓁𝒶𝓈𝓉𝑜𝓇.
Lucifer would carefully tuck the note into his journal with a wide smile on his face.
