Gellert and Albus didn't break up and adopted Tom Riddle and Harry Potter.
While Albus Dumbledore worked on raising Harry to be the next great white wizard, Gellert Grindelwald apparently knew better than to deal with another adopted son, who appeared to be just as dark a soul as him.
"Al, you're just too gentle to deal with him."
But in any case, his peaceful retirement with Al was out of the question.Or, maybe the so-called quiet life never existed in the first place for this family that carries a bit of a mystery in everyone.
