One, two, three sets of stairs he climbs. The third floor hallway in the old building is empty after school with the sole exception of him. He still nervously looks around, just in case, before rushing into the girls’ bathroom.
One, two, three stalls he passes. He stands before the third stall, steeling himself for the encounter that may or may not occur. Taking a deep breath, he walks forward and raises a fist.
One, two three knocks on the door. “Hanako-san, Hanako-san, are you in there?” he asks. He knows her story by heart by now. A girl with bobbed hair and a red skirt haunting this toilet and granting wishes—for a price. He hopes his wish is small enough that the price isn’t too bad.
One, two, three seconds pass before he hears something that sounds suspiciously like a girl gasping—or maybe he’s paranoid—but then the door creaks open, and he’s staring up into the face of Hanako-san herself.
She doesn’t have a bobbed haircut or a red skirt. Instead her white hair flows down past her shoulders, ending in green tips that make him think of radishes. There are little horns set on her head, with the hair bunched curiously around them like the horns had once been hairclips. She wears the Kamome Academy girls’ uniform with a skull brooch. Her legs—her ankles are comically fat, though, and honestly ruin her ethereal image. She really does look like a radish.
“Ah,” she says. She seems unsure. “Yugi-kun…?”
He blinks. “H-how do you know my name?”
“Oh, I, er…” She changes the topic. “You shouldn’t be in the girls’ bathroom, shouldn’t you?”
