Work Text:
Izuku Midoriya lay immobilized once again, his left arm and right leg wrapped up in casts. He sighed, and reached out with his right arm to grab his phone, which lay on a desk beside the bed. He couldn't say he was surprised to find himself in the hospital again, but it certainly was never a pleasant experience. That was when he heard the door to his hospital room creak open. "Huh?" he turned his head. "Oh- All Might! Hi!" he sputtered.
All Might looked him up and down, and let out a sigh of exasperation. "In the hospital again, huh?"
Midoriya looked away. "I'm sorry, I just got a little carried away using One For All and-"
All Might interrupted him. "Well, the thing I really came here to ask was do you need anything? Class 1-A is getting a food delivery and I wanted to know if you wanted me to bring any."
"What food?" Midoriya inquired.
"Todoroki insisted on cold soba," All Might informed the boy.
"Oh... right. I'll have some," Midoriya replied.
All Might nodded and left the room, leaving the hero-in-training alone once again. Midoriya soon felt the familiar loneliness of the hospital room begin to creep in. Bored and lonely, he glanced at his surroundings, until he heard a voice. "Hey!"
"HUH!?" The young boy let out a surprised scream as he looked in the direction of the voice he had heard. "Who's there!?" he asked nervously.
"It's just me, the hospital bed. Y'know, the one you're on?" the voice said, sounding frustrated.
"I didn't know hospital beds could talk, did this bed get hit with some Quirk or something?" Midoriya began to mumble, speculating about who it could be. He didn't know any villains with that Quirk, and it couldn't be anyone in the school or a pro hero pranking him, they didn't have that Quirk. Unless Momo somehow created a talking hospital bed.
"Hey!" the hospital bed snapped again, "listen here boy. I see you here a lot. How do you always break your bones? How are they even still in use? And yes, I AM a talking hospital bed. How? I don't know. But I'm alive, so don't act like I'm not here."
"I just don't understand, I thought beds were inanimate objects, how could you be talking?" Midoriya asked, nervousness still present in his tone.
"Again, I don't know, so don't expect me to answer," the bed retorted.
Midoriya was still extremely confused. A hospital bed? Talking? He'd never even so much as heard of an anomaly like this before. He let out a sigh, attempting to calm himself, and decided to get to know the bed. He had no other company anyways. "So, do you have a name? I'm Izuku Midoriya, but my hero name is Deku."
The bed went silent for a moment, and then burst out laughing. "Who's gonna take you seriously with a hero name like THAT?"
Midoriya went silent, his face becoming red from embarrassment. However, he also felt something else - no, it couldn't be. Butterflies in his stomach? For a hospital bed? No, it was probably just from how bizarre it was. But, again, there was something about this bed. When the hospital bed stopped, it went on, "I don't exactly have a name. No one bothered to name me; they all thought I was just what you thought. An inanimate object, nothing more, nothing less. Not deserving of a name."
Something about the bed's tone dropping at the end made Midoriya upset. Despite having just met it, he didn't like seeing the hospital bed in this state. "Well, how about you give yourself a name? Just like I gave myself a hero name."
"That's a good idea," the bed responded.
The praise made Midoriya blush, and look away. "You really think so?" He hid his face.
Wait. NO. He couldn't be... falling in love? He had always wanted to fall in love with a human, he had never thought it'd be a hospital bed. He always thought he'd meet a person and fall in love, not ever talk to an object and fall in love. "S-so, what are you gonna name yourself?" Midoriya asked, in an attempt to distract himself.
"Hospitrus Bedzina," the bed said. "I just made the words hospital and bed more fancy."
"A-alright, Bed-bedzina," Midoriya stuttered.
"No, you can call me Hospitrus! I wouldn't even have a name if it weren't for you. And is something wrong? You're stuttering," Bedzina inquired.
"I-I THINK I LIKE YOU!" Midoriya suddenly spit out.
Everything went silent. Midoriya's heart raced up to his throat. It was beating so quickly, it was as if everyone could hear it. He looked down. "W-WAIT!! NO! I DIDN'T MEAN TO SAY-"
"Shh," Bedzina said suddenly. "Y'know- I like you too."
"R-really?"
"Yes, really."
They shared a moment of silence, processing what the other had just said. Then, Midoriya placed a gentle kiss on the bed, and he could feel it heat up. "I love you, Hospitrus," Midoriya said.
"I love you too, Izuku."
Midoriya and the hospital bed spent the rest of their lives together, leading Midoriya to eventually get married. They had 2 children, and they were a cross between a human and a bed. Midoriya never regretted a day of his life, and spending the rest of the days with his wife were something he would always look forward to.
