Chapter 1: Going Riding
Chapter Text
The sun was shinning, the birds were singing, this was going to be a wonderful day (or so Merlyn thought). King Uther Pendragon decided he wanted to go on a ride with his son, Gaius and his 'lovely' ward Morgana, so naturally they where joined by Arthur's most trusted knights Sirs Leon, Lancelot, Gwaine, Elyan, Percival, and of course Arthur's maidservant and Morgana's as well.
Arthur announced it early morning to the knights and Merlyn, who groaned upon hearing the news. Obviously, Gwen had already heard the news as when Merlyn got to the stables, Gwen was readying Morgana's horse.
"Good morning Gwen!" Merlyn said.
"Oh, hello! All set for the ride?" Gwen asked facing her friend
"No, not really..."
Gwen chuckled "Oh come on, I mean, how bad could it be?"
Chapter Text
Once Gwen and Merlyn got all the horses sorted, the group set off with Uther, Morgana and Gaius at the front, and Arthur, his knights and both maidservants behind the knights, talking happily. About half an hour later, Gwaine had just finished one of the 'brilliant' tavern stories and decided it would be hilarious to throw a goblet (who knows where that came from...) at her head, so he did.
"Ow, who threw that!?" Merlyn cried, looking ahead at the snickering knights, even Leon found it hard to control his laughter, but Merlyn quickly put a stop to that...
"I said. Who. through. that!?" she snarled, giving them all The Famous Merlyn Death Stare.
'God, if looks could kill...' Gwen thought.
They all stopped laughing immediately and pointed at Gwaine who looked like he feared for his life.
"Oh you little...!" she exclaimed.
"Oh boy, you better run!" Elyan laughed.
"Oh no!" shrieked Gwaine like a girl, digging his heal into his horse, urging it to go faster, speeding of ahead of Uther and Morgana with Merlyn close behind.
"Do you really let your servant talk to your knights like that?" King Uther asked looking disgusted. Arthur just shrugged his shoulders with a small, gentle smile on his face, but before he could answer everything went dark.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When Arthur next awoke, he could hear the sound of Gwaine's voice saying, "Hello Princess, how nice of you to join us!"
"What happened?" he asked, confused and feeling slightly unfocused.
"Well, all we remember is everything went dark and now we are here..." Leon answered, who was helping his farther and Gaius up. He looked around to see if he could recognise where they were, but all he could see was the dark wall as a cell.
"Hey, where's Merlin?" asked Gwen said braking his train of thought. But before anyone could answer, or Arthur could start to panic, the door of the cell came flying open.
Notes:
A/N: I know these first two chapters were short but the next one should be longer. I don't own Merlin.
Chapter 3: Explanations
Chapter Text
Standing there was a sorcerer in a dark blue cloak that knocked them out with a spell before they knew he was even there. The sorcerer was standing over Merlyn' who still hadn't woken up. He smiled gently, and said, "Glad you could make it Merlyn." Merlyn just rolled her eyes; it was not as if she was given a choice in the matter.
"Who are you and why are you interested in my servant? She hasn't done anything." Arthur defends his secret lover (I couldn't think of another word). The sorcerer looked at Arthur smugly and laughed.
"I want to know why she is loyal to you, to Camelot. I cannot simply ask her, and I doubt if I did, that anyone would agree with what she says. She is the only one who could understand it. I need her alive, but I don't need the rest of you." Arthur and the knights looked highly confused, even Merlyn had no clue what the man was talking about.
"Oh, I'm sorry, I did not realize that you do not know about Merlyn's secret." He turned to see Merlyn with a panicked look on her face. "Would you like to tell Arthur who you really are, or shall I do the honors because I would love to see his face once he knows the truth." Merlyn sighed and finally gave in; she knew this was simply unavoidable.
She slowly turned from the man to look at Arthur and said, "Please don't hate me," she looks at Arthur, before looking away as she couldn't stand seeing him look at her with anger in his eyes, "I have magic." Arthur was betrayed and looked very shocked. She wanted to go over and talk to him, explain to him why she never told him. What she didn't know, was that he wasn't angry because she had magic, he had been unsure about his father's views for a while, he was angry because she didn't tell him. They were supposed to trust each other and she didn't enough to tell him her secret.
The knights and Gwen were shocked but most weren't very surprised. In fact, many things were starting to make sense. The fallen tree branches, the fires, someone falling off their horse into a pond. It was all Merlyn. While most of the knights could easily accept this, Leon was brought up hating magic, hearing how it was evil and should be eliminated. Of course he had doubts, especially when he was ordered to arrest and kill children, but he always assumed that the King was right.
Morgana was overjoyed and confused. Overjoyed because she could finally get her revenge for poisoning her. She was waiting until Merlyn got in trouble with the King again so she could make it much worse, but this would work too. However, she was confused as to why she would poison her. They were the same, weren't they?
The King. He was furious! There was a sorceress living right under his nose. In his home. All those times she had been accused of sorcery and even admitted to it. She was practicing ... magic. How did no one notice?!
Gaius and Lancelot were trying to hide their panic. She'll be killed now. And if they show they know, they'll be killed too. Then there will be no one to get anyone out of this.
Meanwhile, as this was going on in their heads, the sorcerer watched on, enjoying their torment. He decided that they had enough time to process that piece of information. " Well, now that you know the big secret, I have a few more guests that should be here." And with a few words mumbled under his breath that Merlyn couldn't make out, two figures appeared in a gust of wind. Merlyn instantly recognised them. Her mother and late father, Hunith and Balinor.
However, she wasn't the only one to recognise them. Uther knew both of them. The woman, he knew from when she pleaded with him to help their village. The man, he would never forget that face. The last Dragon Lord, who, he had been told by his son, had died. He drew his sword and was about to charge, when the sorcerer began to speak, distracting him.
"Everything will be explained in time. For now, please, have a seat." Uther could feel himself lowering to the bench, even with him resisting. They were facing the dark wall when it lit up.
Notes:
The next chapter will be up on the 5th of August.
Thank you for reading. I don’t have a strict updating schedule, but I will try to say when it will be up next.
Chapter 4: Eyes of Gold
Chapter Text
They were now looking at what looks like ... Ealdor.
"Wait, is that Ealdor? What are you doing? What is this?" Merlin rambles as she begins to figure out what the sorcerer meant when he said he wanted something from her. "They are memories. From almost everyone is this room. This is to help me understand how you have and will become Emrys." The sorcerer said, making everyone stare at him in pure shock. Merlin begins to panic about them seeing what she has done. What she has learned. Who she has killed.
Before she could protest, he continued, " I was going to start with how you met the Once and Future King, however, I realised that's not all that has made you who you are. Therefore we shall see every important event in your life that has led to this moment. And now... Tosaigh na himeachtaí seo! Taispeáin a bhfuil agus a thiocfaidh chun bheith!"
Suddenly, the peaceful setting of Ealdor was interrupted by a bloodcurdling scream.
Everyone flinched as Arthur jumped up, asking,"What was that?" There is a look of confusion and slight recognition on Gaius' wrinkled face, "I don't know for certain, however, I feel I've heard it before." This leaves everyone wondering why Gaius recognises a scream in Ealdor.
The fields changed to a small hut, inside was a slightly younger, and less wrinkly looking Gaius.
'I think I now know why I had heard the scream before.' Gaius thinks, showing a look of peacefulness, knowing there is nothing wrong.
He was holding a bundle of blankets in his arms while trying to help an also younger looking Hunith sit up before handing her the small bundle to hold.
"Oh," Hunith gasps in surprise. "This was when Merlyn was born." She smiles, remembering holding young Merlyn. When she also remembers what happened when Gaius left the room, her smile drops.
She doesn't see her late husband smile longingly at what he hadn't even known he'd missed until it was far too late. "Mum, it that...? Oh, you look so young!" Merlyn compliments her mother, smiling at how peaceful she seems. "But, why are we seeing my birth? I thought this was about my magic?" She asks, confused. Gaius replies, confusion also showing on his face, "I'm not sure, my dear child. As far as I can remember, nothing very extraordinary happened at least not with your ..." Gaius hesitates, still not too comfortable speaking of magic in the presence of others; especially the King. "...Magic." He knew he was right to be cautious when he saw the King's hands twitch and move towards his now, nonexistent sword. He looked around to see the reactions of the rest of the people.
Most of the knights seem fine, with the exception of Gwaine who looks like he wants to go up to Merlyn and tease her endlessly. Gwen watches the screen trying to get a glimpse of what she now knows is her friend's little face. Morgana seems bitter and slightly relieved about something. And Arthur, looks at the screen eager to see more. He then turns to look at the screen once more.
"Oh, she's beautiful! And so small." Hunith says, not taking her eyes off her newly born daughter. Gaius smiles at his niece and grandniece. "I shall grab some more quilts." Gaius says, before leaving them alone to bond some. Hunith continues to watch Merlyn with a look of awe on her face. Suddenly, the perspective changes, and we can now see Merlyn's pink, scrunched up face. She opens her eyes, which can't seem to focus on anything. She appears to be looking around for a minute, before seemingly spotting her mother. She coos, and the small specks of gold in her light blue eyes seem to morph together, turning the iris of her eyes pure gold.
The room goes silent. Arthur is stunned. How is it possible? He had grown up being told that only those who are evil use magic. But Merlyn isn’t evil. There was also another part of himself that wasn’t as shocked as he thought he would be. ‘It's Merlyn, she's always been very different. I just didn’t know how much.’
Oblivious to his only son's thoughts, Uther can’t believe how this monster managed to get so close to his son and him. She obviously seduced him with her magic and has entranced him into falling for her. He felt that she should continue to observe this monster's life, so he would be able to find her weaknesses and once he kills the sorcerer that has kidnapped them, he can kill her. His son would finally be free.
Hunith's hair is moved by a seemingly invisible force.
She freezes and looks down at her newborn daughter with a look of fear in her eyes. She starts mumbling,”This can not be... No... They’re going to hurt her... They’re going to kill her!” She holds her daughter closer to her chest.
Leon can suddenly feel this weight on his chest. He has drowned babies and killed children who had parents that were accused of possessing magic. That could have been Merlyn’ The girl he now sees as a little sister, he could have killed, had she been years younger. Her mother could have been killed and have had to have watched someone kill her daughter. These kids have done nothing wrong. Those with magic are not the monsters, they are.
Suddenly, Gaius can be heard coming back towards the room. Hunith whispers to her daughter, “They can never know. But you will grow up knowing how special you are. You are amazing...” she trails off, as Gaius enters the room.
“No one can know.”
