Chapter Text
It was a normal day at Aldera Elementary School. The sun was shining bright and the birds would’ve been chirping if it wasn’t for the sound of explosions rightfully scaring them away. No one was hurt, well one person was but according to everyone at the scene, the so-called Quirkless Deku didn’t matter so it was fine. Izuku Midoriya, the Deku in question, was used to being beaten like this. Today’s beating felt like it was a little worse than it normally was, but he didn’t know if it was because it was three years since he was diagnosed quirkless, because he stopped his former friend and self-proclaimed future Number One Hero Kacchan from beating up someone else, or both. He couldn’t really tell, he told himself it was because he was seven that he couldn’t figure it out before latching onto another thought, it had been three years.
It was three years to the day that he was told to give up on his dream of being a hero. Three years since his father left because of his own uselessness. Three years since everyone including his own mother gave up hope in him. Another explosion knocked him out of his thoughts.
“What is it Deku? Are you so scared that you just forgot we were here? I know you didn’t ignore me”
“I- I- I wo-would never i-ignore you ka-Kacchan”
BOOM “I TOLD YOU TO STOP CALLING ME THAT” Kacchan screamed as he released his quirk again.
Deku felt something fall from behind him and remembered where he was. He had started eating lunch on the roof about a year ago to get away from Kacchan and his lackeys. They had found out about his spot a few months ago but had only just now managed to get up to him, maybe he would find another spot after today.
“HEY I’M STILL TALKING TO YOU” Kacchan yelled at Deku as he moved slightly closer.
“S-so-sorry Kat-Ka-Kacchan”
“God you’re so scared that you can’t even say my name, how do you ever expect to be a hero even if you had a quirk, you’re so useless.” The Deku was left unsaid by Kacchan this time, but his words still came out with a snarl.
Deku takes another step back, or at least tries to before almost falling off the roof like the useless deku he is. ‘No, I can’t die now. I would hurt Kacchan’s chances of being a hero along with making Mom sad. She might not believe in him but she still loves him, right.’
“Watch where you are walking Deku, don’t wanna fall. Maybe if you did you would get a quirk though. Aunties is some weak transformation quirk right, maybe you'll get it.” Kacchan still continued to snarl at him with a face with more anger than a seven-year-old should be able to muster.
‘Kacchan was right! Mom does have a transformation quirk… sorta. Her quirk allowed her to transform into an owl… if she had come in contact with one within 24 hours, and she was able to hold the form for either 24 hours of transformation or if she turned back, in which case she would need to come in contact with one again. Dad had some kind of mild mutation quirk, maybe he was part opossum? It was something with brown fur I think, it’s been so long since I’ve seen him I forgot what he looked like’
BOOM
Kacchan released another explosion from his palm causing Deku to stumble off the roof. On one hand, he was scared out of his mind falling off of a building but on another hand, he started to feel free. It wasn’t like Kacchan or anyone else could hurt him while he was falling. The landing was going to hurt however so he began to think of ways for it to not be painful. ‘Come on Deku, you need to do something! Maybe you coul-’
All of a sudden Dek- Izuku’s vision changed, everything looked a bit smoky but he could see through it, and he wasn’t moving. Well, his arms- wait those aren’t arms those are wings! ‘Wait wings why do I have win-’ “I’M AN OWL, I HAVE A QUIRK”
While saying, or well screeching, those words he stopped moving his wings and promptly fell to the ground, and then everything went black.
---------
Inko Midoriya thought she was doing her best, really she did. It wasn’t her fault that her child was quirkless and it wasn’t her fault that her husband went overseas to America. She wished that he would send some more money so she could spend more time with her baby. It wasn’t her fault that he was made of glass and needed to be protected and coddled all the time. He was quirkless after all and quirkless people were weak and nothing, he would be her baby his whole life and a part of her was happy about that. So imagine her surprise that she got a call from the school saying that she needed to come quickly, that Izuku was hurt and might’ve awakened a quirk somehow.
Inko didn’t know how to feel. One on hand she was overjoyed, maybe he wouldn’t be bullied as much at school since they saw that he had a quirk as well. She had a feeling that he might have one that just had a very niche activation like hers was. The other part of her was sad that her boy wasn’t made of glass. However, that meant she could spend more time at work and not worry about him as much. He was getting close to the age where he could take care of himself right, he would be nine soon. A nine-year-old could take care of themselves, right? Izuku is smart he should be able to. Now, what was she doing again, right her baby boy was hurt at school. She hoped that he wasn’t being bullied anymore, she knows he never was officially but it wasn’t hard to figure out, the school didn’t care about quirkless kids but then who did. No one cares about them because of how fragile they were, but she was willing to do that for her child and he got a quirk out of it. She felt proud now to make her way to the hospital. ‘Wait, THE HOSPITAL! WHY IS MY BABY IN THE HOSPITAL!?’ She thought before clocking out of work as fast as she was allowed to.
---------
When Izuku woke up he had no idea where he was. He slowly began recognizing tiles on the ceiling and realized that he was in the hospital. As soon as he started moving up his mother all but tackled him back down.
“WHATHAPPENEDIZUKUTHEYSAIDYOUJUMPEDBUTYOUWOULDNTJUMPRIGHTPLEASETELLMEYOUDIDN’TJUMPI-” Inko frantically shouted at her son.
“I didn’t jump mom, I fell while walking along the edge,” Izuku said. ‘technically the truth.’
“What were you doing up there,” She said, still frantic from before just not as much. She seemingly calmed down some after he spoke up about what he said happened.
“I eat lunch up there, it’s calmer and I’ve always liked being closer to the sky, and I guess that kinda makes sense with my quirk since I’m pretty sure I was flying before I hit the ground.” ‘Also technically the truth,’ Izuku thought to himself.
“According to what I heard from the school, that they heard from students, there was a smoke cloud along with a loud screech, and you just fell out of it a few seconds later.” Said the doctor.
“Yeah, there was” Izuku stopped the doctor from continuing, “It was like everything became smokey, but I saw that instead of arms I had wings. When I stopped to look at the wings they stopped moving and I fell”
“What happened after you fell, do you remember anything?” The doctor asked as he walked around the hospital room.
“I-I remember waking up here” Izuku replied nervously. He wished he knew anything else about what had happened, but after he slipped everything became fuzzy. At least, he thinks he slipped.
“Well,” The doctor continued “You gave yourself a concussion with that fall. Outside of that most of your injuries were surprisingly minor but I guess your short transformation helped break the fall. You did still break your right foot so you will need a cast on it for a few weeks, along with seeing a quirk counselor since it seems yours just developed, so congratulations on that.” The last line coming out somewhat cynical.
“Yes I plan on scheduling my baby here an appointment with one as soon as I can, how much longer do you think he will be staying here if I may ask,” Inko said, still a bit shaken from the recent events.
“Mom I’m not a baby anymore, I have a quirk now. That does mean that I am no longer a baby right?” He said, sounding somewhat hopeful.
“Yes Izuku I guess it does, now let the doctor finish what he was saying,” Inko said, back to the impatient tone she had to use a lot with Izuku whenever she had to have him move away from a hero fight that was occurring… or to just get him off the topic of heroes in general.
“It’s no problem Midoriya-san. We plan on keeping him here a few more hours due to his concussion and his injuries, we will have a nurse with a healing quirk come by now that he is awake that should heal him up a bit more, after that he should be good to go with his cast and things to the aforementioned healing quirk he shouldn’t need crutches however they will still be provided, given that he needs to be light on it for about four to six weeks it’s more a precautionary measure than anything. Now I will leave the two of you alone while I go get the nurse.” The doctor stated, with a bit more enthusiasm than last time he spoke.
As the doctor leaves Izuku gestures to his mother.
“Mom, I’m sorry for worrying you with this, I didn't mean to fall off a roof but at least I finally got my quirk! But anyways can you think about signing me up for some fighting classes. I-I know y-you said no before but I ha-have a quirk now so I-I am a big boy n-now and ka-Kachan doesn’t pr-protect m-me l-like he s-should.” Izuku said, with a pleading look in his eyes. ‘I really hope she says yes, even if I have a quirk they are three years ahead of me, plus the classes can help me become a hero by already having the skills possibly even put me ahead of them in combat.’
Inko opened her mouth while she thought of her reply “I’ll think about Izuku ok, I suspect they will at least leave you alone somewhat now that you have a quirk. We can try and find a place while your foot heals for you to take a class or two and we will go from there ok.” She finally said, dragging her feet a little on the ground in reluctance.
“Thanks, Mom, you’re the best,” Izuku replied, smiling with the light of a thousand suns.
Just then the door opened, and the nurse came in.
“Time to get you healed up, now my name is-” And Izuku wasn’t even listening, already preparing analysis on her quirk while being excited to know that his mom is going to let him learn to defend himself, maybe Kacchan will be his friend again, maybe. Just maybe.
