Work Text:

Four months. Four months since the destruction of civilisation. Four months of pain and anguish, of digging through rubble in the desperate search for survivors. But it had long since dawned on the pair that they were truly alone in this desolate wasteland they once called home.

Lena Luthor and Kara Danvers, the last survivors of the apocalypse.

Once the original shock and sorrow had faded somewhat, the duo had set about ensuring their survival as the last know members of the human race. Shortly after the original eruption, a series of earthquakes had annihilated the L-Corp bunker, forcing the women to evacuate. After combining Lena’s engineering skills with Kara’s gut instinct, they had eventually taken refuge in the crumpled remains of the CatCo headquarters.

Food was rare, water even scarcer and the air was thick with toxic pollutants that left an acrid taste lingering in the back of their throats. It was obvious that the atmosphere and poor conditions would kill them both, and with their lives would end the last hope of recovery.

The solution, it seemed, was uncovered quite by accident. The pair was seated beside a small fire just outside their makeshift shelter, huddled for warmth and engrossed in conversation.

“I remember,” Kara began, “Alex used to tell me about the FBI procedure in case of an apocalypse. It all seemed ridiculous back then, I guess.” Lena made a small noise of sorrow, snuggling closer to Kara and gazing into the embers of the fire. “She used to say that there was a bunker, fit to hold a thousand, stocked for an eternity.”

Lena’s head shot up, her gaze alert. “Did she say where?”

“I think so…but I don’t even know if it exists, Lena.”

“That doesn’t matter, it can hardly be worse than this.” Kara’s brow furrowed as she racked her brains, searching her memory for those oh-so-important details. Then, all of a sudden, the memory came flooding back to her in full strength.

“It’s underneath the FBI headquarters! Somewhere in Washington,” Kara exclaimed, a surge of euphoria coursing through her veins. Lena smiled, despite the knowledge of the gruelling journey to follow.

“Well, it’s worth a shot. We’ll leave at dawn.”
