Chapter 1: Beginning

Chapter Text

Jack's earliest memories consisted of dragons, both good and bad.

The memories of dragons nearly eliminated the memories of his family.

He barely remembers his human family.

If you could even consider them human.

That decision will be left up to you.

You see, when Jack was only a few years of age, his emotions seemed to cause him to exhibit strange powers and abilities.

When he could barely walk, he would make it snow inside of his bedroom, causing his parents to go into a panic.

He would laugh and snow would fall only around him in calm wisps.

He would flee from other children or danger and the wind would effortlessly cradle him and carry him wherever he wanted to be.

Even though these inhuman abilities seemed magical, amazing the wide-eyed child, his parents and village dwellers were the opposite of amazed.

They elders claimed his powers were demonic, wishing to be rid of the child and whatever possessed him as soon as possible.

Although Jack had never harmed anyone and was still a young child, they agreed they should vanquish the child's existence as soon as possible.

So that is exactly what they did.

One night, his parents slipped a few herbs into Jack's drink, to ensure that he wouldn't wake during the events that night.

The elders led his parents away from the village once they took the child from his bed, not caring about his frail body in the chilled air.

His parents stood at the edge of the cliff, staring at their breath as it froze in the air, the harsh waves beat against the face of the rocks in the shallow light of the moon.

They sighed in relief as they let go, watching their child, young and innocent, falling through the air, completely unaware of the situation while he slept.

As he slipped through the frozen air, the light of the moon shone on him for the few moments he was visible, enlightening a few snowflakes escaping from his hands.

His parents did not bat an eye as his body hit the freezing water, disappearing beneath the violent waves of the sea.

Jack's memory of that day evades him, and fate be willing, it will stay so.

Through the past few years or so, Jack buried his curiosity for that day.

The earliest memory, after that day that he can remember, is of the moon.

The moon was shining down on his face as he was held in wings, against the warmth of a dragon.

His life then revolved around growing within a dragon family.

When he would ask about his missing memories, his dragons would often tell him there is a reason he doesn't remember.

So as Jack, now seventeen and living on his own, sails the seas on a ship he acquired through trade at a local village.

He wouldn't say he is exactly filled with joy at the prospect of his life, but he is content, no matter how lonely it can be.

He figured he would be in a position to deal with the loneliness and ignore his wants for a purpose in this world.

But one day, something, or someone, shows him he can have a purpose.

He finds what makes him truly happy, and he will do whatever he can to avoid being shipwrecked.
