Work Text:
Kate comes to consciousness slowly. There’s a soft fluffy feeling across her cheek, tickling her nose. At first, she thinks it’s Lucky, having snuck from his bed to hers once again. She nearly drifts back off to sleep but then Lucky moves and as she wakes up more she registers the weight in her arms and the soft, furless skin her fingertips brush over.
That’s not Lucky. That is a person. There is a person in my bed. Why is there a person in my bed? Who is in my bed???
Kate squeezes her eyes and braces her body, tensing as she opens one eye slowly. She stifles a gasp as her eyes pass over messy blonde hair pulling loose from a complicated braid. This is a braid pattern she knows well.
It’s Yelena, okay. Breathe Kate. It’s just Yelena. Yelena is in your bed. Yelena is in your arms. Kate fucking breathe.
She takes a deep breath, trying to process these facts as she wakes up slowly. Before she can think she’s pulling away slowly, as gently as possible to avoid waking the sleeping widow.
Just gonna- yep. Gotta move the arm without waking Yelena. Who was just in your arms? By choice? Gotta get out of the bed. Can't wake her up. Gonna die if you wake her up. Slow Kate, you can’t wake her. Look how peaceful she is.
But before Kate can even shift her weight more than an inch she finds a hand tangled in her shirt. Yelena’s face tucked further into the crook of Kate’s neck. Pulling Kate closer even deep in her sleep. And right there, at that moment Kate knows, no matter what she’ll always be wrapped around this little widow. And she decides she can figure out how this happened in the morning as she curls her arms a little tighter around Yelena as she drifts back off to sleep.
