Surprising You Is A Losing Game

Summary:

A 5+1 about all the times that Rain tries and fails to surprise Phayu, and the one time that he pulls it off (with a little help from his friends.)

(1)

There's chocolate everywhere. On his cheeks, on his hands, it’s on the counter and the fridge. He's not sure, but he thinks that it might also be on the couch and Rain really doesn't know how that might have happened. He swears that he hasn't left the kitchen since he started this project but he can't think of what else the little brown smear might be.

Phayu's going to kill him. But Phayu isn't home yet and maybe, maybe if he rushes he can at least get this finished.

Surely the delight of being surprised will be enough to save Rain the lecture that he knows is coming his way? At least he really hopes it is.

Just like he really hopes that Phayu appreciates all the effort he's put into trying to make these stupid strawberries. All the articles online had said it was easy! Easy enough for a child even!

But they didn't show all the mess or the way the chocolate kept wanting to drip off and they definitely didn't show the clock tipping down to the hour his boyfriend was supposed to be home. They wouldn't even have time to set at this rate!

Haphazardly Rain shakes the sprinkles on top, trying not to think about the ones that are scattering on the floor as he does. He needs to act fast, needs to get them in the fridge before Phayu comes home. He'll shove them in the fridge and then there will be plenty of time for him to start cleaning up the massacre that he's made of the kitchen this afternoon.

But that's all he manages- to get the fridge closed with his hard work inside before he hears the front door open.

"P'Phayu! I can explain-" Rain's jaw shuts with a click at the sight of Phayu and Prapai.

Shit.

He'd forgotten that Prapai was supposed to come over tonight to discuss race business. The racer's eyes twinkle as he surveys the mess, and maybe, just maybe if Rain focuses on that, he doesn't have to acknowledge just how exasperated his boyfriend looks.

"Nong-"

Or maybe he will. Rain scratches the back of his head sheepishly, trying to at least look cute. "I made chocolate covered strawberries?"

Phayu sighs, shaking his head as he smiles fondly. "I can see that, Nong. I can see that."

His mouth is running approximately 10 miles a minute when it happens, "- and then, after that, we'll go back to the hotel room and we can order room service. I made sure of it! They have great reviews for their hotel dinners because well, I thought given the new toys that you wouldn't want to waste time having dinner outside. And then maybe the next day we can go to the beach. I know you said we have reservations at that seafood restaurant but I was really hoping that you'd still let us get ice cream. I've always wanted to go for a long walk on the beach while eating ice cream, even though it's probably silly and the ice cream will probably melt because it's so hot. But you always see it in those American movies and-"

"Breathe."

Rain obeys immediately, taking a deep breath in as he stares out the window of the Range Rover. The truth is, he hates sitting in the passenger seat during long rides, his mind always goes too fast and Phayu doesn't like it when he fidgets too much. Doesn't like it when he rambles too much, either.

It's not Rain's fault that he's distracting. If Phayu has such a problem with it, he should just let Rain drive.

"What's this about new toys?" Phayu asks, one hand reaching over to squeeze his thigh briefly before returning to the wheel.

And oh- oh Rain had not meant to say that part earlier. He hadn't. "Uhm, nothing?"

"Didn't sound like nothing," Phayu teases.

Rain glowers, pulling his knees up to his chest even though he knows Phayu will chide him for putting his feet on the seat. "How is that the one thing you picked up from everything I said! You didn't even answer me about what movie we should watch later."

"You know I'm happy to watch whatever you put on," Phayu answers, tone gentle. "Do you want me to pretend I didn't hear the other thing?"

Terror. Absolute terror. His boyfriend is a terror because yes, Rain does want to pretend that Phayu didn't hear him. But he did. Rain's gone and ruined the surprise again, and he'd gotten so close this time! He'd managed to go to the adult store all by himself since Sky adamantly refused to help him with 'that' kind of thing. He'd bought his purchase with cash so that Phayu wouldn't see it on the credit card. He'd even managed to get everything packed without Phayu seeing it.

And now he's gone and spoiled it all on the way to the resort.

Rain huffs. "I wanted to surprise you! I know how hard it is for you to take off work and this was supposed to be special."

"It is special. What a darling wifey I have, going through all that effort to surprise me on our trip."

Rain hates being placated. "Not as special as it would have been!"

"I'll be the judge of that."

His cheek squishes against the glass wall and Rain, Rain's brain short circuits as a firm hand wraps around his cock. There's not a lot of room for movement, and the angle must hurt Phayu's wrist given that his boyfriend hadn't even bothered to shove Rain's pants down. They shouldn't be doing this, not here, not where Saifah could come home any minute.

"P'Phayu-" Rain whines, voice high and reedy.

"Yes, my darling?" Phayu teases like he's not currently stroking Rain's erection. Like he isn't aware of exactly why Rain's entire brain is offline. "You were saying something, weren't you? About winning- I think."

"I- no fair, P'Phayu. I'm not telling you."

The hand on his cock gives a little twist and Rain's knees try to buckle. If not for the body pressing him into the wall, he's certain he'd be on the ground. Rain shudders, breath making shapes on the glass. "Your brother-"

"Mmm, finished up at the garage about ten minutes ago if that clock is right. How long do you think it'll take him to get here? Five more minutes? Ten?"

"He's gonna see-" if Rain could stamp his feet, he would. Settles instead for trying to push away, well aware he's no match for Phayu's strength.

"He is. Unless, of course- someone tells me what he's being so naughty about."

"Not naughty," Rain tries to argue. "Trying to be nice."

"Naughty," Phayu repeats. "You've been sneaking around and then I catch you gloating to Sky on the phone about winning against me."

"I didn't- I didn't- I didn't know you were getting off early," Rain is finally able to get out, trying to ignore the hot breath tickling the back of his neck. He's just so sensitive there and Phayu knows it.

"Poor little Rain, caught in his plotting. You're running out of time, Nong. Are you going to tell me what mischief you're up to, or is Saifah going to get a show?"

Truly, it should be Phayu who is more ashamed here- it's his brother, not Rain's. He's the one who should be rushing them out of the common living space and into the bedroom. But it seems like lately Phayu's been trying to get caught. Or at the very least, has been enjoying leaving Rain hard and panting when his brother enters the room.

"P'Phayu!"

"Tick. Tock. I bet he's almost to the driveway now," Phayu taunts, kissing the spot behind Rain's ear. "What were you talking to Sky about, Nong? That's all you need to tell me and we can go upstairs. Finish this up somewhere nice and private."

Rain tries to stay strong, he does, but then there's the flash of headlights over the hill and he's got no choice. "Sky helped me get tickets to a concert for your birthday- it was supposed to be a surprise."

"Good boy," Phayu murmurs into his ear as the hand disappears from his pants and instead finds his shoulder. "Up the stairs with you now, so that I can reward my sweet, sweet boy for trying to surprise me."

This time, this time Rain's sure that he's done it.

He talks to Prapai about what kind of gloves would be best to replace the ones that Phayu currently has- the ones that are starting to look a little worse for wear. He makes Prapai promise not to tell Phayu that he stopped by, or what they talked about. He has them delivered to the shop- even has them delivered to P'Nui specifically. He'd thought about asking P'Aon but the man was far too likely to bend under a stray wind.

Rain had collected them from the receptionist one day while Phayu was busy with his other job. He'd hidden them at Sky's.

This time?

This time Rain is certain that he's finally managed to do something that will surprise his boyfriend.

Except when Phayu carefully undoes the wrapping paper he doesn't seem shocked at all. Pleased, sure, but not shocked. Phayu kisses him, and for a second, it slips Rain's brain that he's supposed to be upset about this.

But only for a second.

"Thank you, I've been needing a new pair of these," Phayu says, wrapping his arms around Rain's waist. "And I appreciate having a wifey who is always looking out for me."

"You knew what they were, didn't you?" Rain accuses, fully aware that he's being ridiculous.

Phayu, for his part, doesn't bother trying to lie to him about it. Probably well aware that Rain will keep poking until he gets the answer that he wants. "Yes. I did."

"How?! Did P'Pai tell you- I bet P'Pai told you. I told him not to."

Phayu shakes his head. "I saw the packing slip at the garage, Nong. That's all."

"But I had it sent to P'Nui! Were you going through her mail? That's rude, P'Phayu!"

"You had it sent to P'Nui, but you still ordered it under your own name, Nong. The paperwork was sitting out on her desk, that's all.'

"So you did read her mail!"

Phayu kisses the tip of his nose, looking far too amused with the situation. "You can't blame me for being a little curious about why my boyfriend was sending things to my receptionist. You're just lucky I'm not the jealous type."

Rain is trying.

He is.

He gets the fabulous idea to celebrate the anniversary of their first kiss, that fateful night after he snuck into the races. Phayu may not approve of his antics, but if it weren't for that night- they wouldn't be together. There's a whole plan involved! Rain will buy a dress like the race girls, the ones that are always leaning on the bikes and flirting with the fresh blood. He'll get Prapai to bring it in, so that Phayu isn't suspicious of what he's doing. Prapai has to be there anyway, it's a perfect plan.

Except for the part where he thinks of it two months before the anniversary. Rain knows that if he buys the dress now, it'll just wind up laid out on the bed with Phayu smirking at him- Rain's never been good at hiding things from his boyfriend. So he sets a reminder in his phone.

A reminder that doesn't go off until he's already at the race, standing under the tent and watching as Phayu checks a bike that's just come back.

Rain stamps his foot when he gets it, drawing a look from Phayu. "Everything okay, Nong?"

No.

"Everything's fine," Rain snips, arms crossed.

Phayu puts down the cloth he'd been using to wipe down the bike. He wraps his arms around Rain's waist, leaning in to nuzzle at the sweet spot on his neck. "Tell Daddy what's wrong, baby. You know I can't stand to see you pouting at work."

Rain melts, the way he always does when Phayu uses that tone on him. "I wanted to surprise you tonight, but I forgot to actually put the order in until it was too late. Now it's all ruined again."

"My sweet, sweet boy. You wanted to celebrate our first kiss or your precious little challenge to make me fall in love with you?"

The first. Both. It didn't matter exactly, he'd just wanted to surprise Phayu and- "Wait! You knew I was planning something?!"

"Maybe," Phayu teased. "Or maybe I planned something myself, you'll just have to find out when we get home tonight, cutie."

The paddle, and the spanking, waiting for him when he gets home almost makes up for Rain's mistake.

Almost.

"Why are we here again?" Prapai asks, leaning against the kitchen counter.

Rain looks up from the tool box that he's been rummaging through for the past five minutes, but it's Sky who answers him, "I'm here because my best friend needs help. You're here because you're an annoying pest who followed me out the door."

It's hard not to grin, Rain always likes it when Sky gets spicy- especially when it isn't directed at him.

"Now-" Sky continues- "Since you are here, maybe you could be helpful, huh? This will go faster with three sets of hands."

"Maybe if Rain had started on this sooner, we wouldn't be rushing trying to finish his little display on Valentine's day instead of enjoying ourselves by the pool, darling. I had a private jet planned and everything," Prapai grumbles, even as he moves to take the tool box from Rain's grasp. He finds the screwdriver that Rain had been looking for far faster than Rain ever would have and joins his boyfriend on the ground where all the pieces are. "A little planning goes a long way, Nong."

"No, if I'd tried to plan it, I would have ruined it again." With Prapai on the shelving task, Rain goes back to flipping through the photos that he'd had printed out after Phayu left for work that morning. "Every time I try to surprise him, he figures it out! If I don't think of it until the day of- then he can't read my mind or find a packing slip or see it on the credit card. Problem solved."

Careful not to bend the corners he picks out his favorite ones, turning them over so that he can write little notes on the back.

"So we're free to leave once we finish this?" Prapai asks, ignoring Rain's explanation.

Which is fine, Rain doesn't have to explain himself to anyone. It doesn't matter if Prapai gets it- it just matters that this all gets done.

Sky shakes his head. "I promised to help him make dinner, too."

"He can get takeout," Prapai says. "I didn't take today off work to spend it helping your best friend."

"It's Valentine's day- everywhere is going to be swamped, if they even take the order at all." Sky leans back on his hands, looking over his progress so far. "And I've already told you once that you're welcome to go back home."

Prapai tips his head to the side, and Rain can almost hear the cogs turning.

"So if I can arrange dinner, you'll come back with me sooner?" Prapai asks, phone already in his hand, typing out a message. "Any other problems that I can solve to get my beloved out of here sooner?"

"Flowers," Rain answers at the same time as Sky says, "Champagne. The good kind."

Prapai's smile is tight. "Flowers and champagne. Any specific flowers?"

"Roses? That's what people do on valentine's day, right?"

"They are," Sky tells him, "and they might be a little hard to get, Rain. Everyone else placed their order weeks ago."

And that's- that's okay. Rain chews on his bottom lip as he continues to mess with the photos. They're cute, he thinks. Snapshots of the two of them, mostly selfies, though he'd managed to wrangle a few off of Sky from the vacation they'd all taken together.

"N'Sky, are you doubting your boyfriend? If little Rain wants roses, he'll have roses. Anything else? Live music perhaps?"

It's a tease or maybe it's a flex, but either way, Rain flushes, shaking his head. The fact that Prapai is going to help with the rest is already more than enough.

The trio descend into a mostly quiet kind of chaos. Rain finishes writing the notes and works on putting the photos into the frames he'd picked up when he bought the shelf. Occasionally he glances up to see where Prapai and Sky are at in building the display, so genuinely grateful for their help. They're far more efficient at it than he would have been.

They've just finished putting in the photos and adding in Phayu's model cars when the doorbell rings and Rain panics. He's not ready, not yet, and Phayu isn't meant to be back for at least another hour.

But it isn't Phayu at all. Instead at the door is a tall, chubby man carrying several bags of groceries.

Prapai lets the man in. "Rain, meet P' Ong, my personal chef. He'll be cooking dinner for you and Phayu tonight. I've already told him what Phayu's favorite foods are, so you just need to stay out of his way."

Rain nods nervously, mouth still a little agape as he steps aside. Ong disappears in and out the door a few more times, each time reappearing with more bags and then finally, roses. Dozens of them in vases that he lines the table with. It makes Rain's brain short circuit a bit.

"Do you approve, Nong?" Prapai asks, squeezing his shoulder.

Rain nods, just a little nod. Everything is so overwhelming already and Phayu isn't even home yet.

"Excellent. Then I would like to take my baby home with me now. We have a private jet to use."

Sky rolls his eyes, though he's already on his feet, ready to go. "You're in good hands, Rain. You've done well."

Sky's hug is warm and tight, grounding him back to earth. "Thanks again for coming. I know you had other plans."

"Yes, but making him wait is part of the fun," Sky whispers in his ear before releasing Rain. "Now, go sit back and relax until Phayu comes home. If you keep fussing around you'll inevitably break something and I don't want to hear about it if you do. Understood?"

"Understood," Rain agrees even as Prapai drags Sky out of the house by his wrist.

Ong is busy in the kitchen, making something that Rain isn't even trying to comprehend. He's content to just watch a master at work, grateful to have something to do other than stare at the ceiling.

His phone buzzes at almost the same time that the door opens and Rain's brain short circuits, unsure of whether to answer the call or turn to look except-

That's Phayu's number on his screen and that's Phayu in the doorway, mouth open to holler out even as he locks eyes with Rain and it isn't excitement or shock in his boyfriend's eyes, it's concern.

"Why is there a car in the driveway?" Phayu asks just as Rain turns to gesture to the kitchen. "Meet P'Ong, Prapai's private chef! He's making us dinner! "

"Dinner," Phayu says slowly as he steps further into the house, tucking his phone back into his pocket. "He's making us dinner."

"Surprise?" Rain tries, suddenly feeling very anxious. He hadn't thought about P'Ong's car or what his boyfriend might think about coming home and seeing a strange vehicle in the driveway. "Happy Valentine's Day?"

"Valentine's Day," Phayu repeats, almost as if to himself as he finally takes a look around the house, taking it all in. His eyes linger on the display case, on the roses, on Rain and Rain-

Swallows. Hard. Waiting to see what his boyfriend's reaction to it all will be.

He takes a step back, and then another as Phayu advances on him, expression unreadable. There's a solid thud when his shoulder hits the wall, and Rain has nowhere left to go.

"P'Phayu-"

Familiar lips crash over his own, stealing his thoughts.

"Don't scare me like that again," Phayu growls in Rain's ear before taking the sensitive flesh into his teeth.

It's a warning bite, but it also makes Rain writhe, face flush. "I didn't mean to scare you! I just wanted to surprise you."

Phayu nips along his jawline, hot breath tickling the sensitive skin even as pin pricks of pain flash white and bright in his brain. They shouldn't be doing this, not here, not with Prapai's private chef just feet away in the kitchen. There's no way that he can't see what they're doing- oh the flaws of an open concept home.

He wants to look over, to see if P'Ong is watching them, but he can barely keep his eyes open as Phayu slots a knee between his legs, lifting Rain up onto his tip toes. He wants to grind down, to chase the pleasure that Phayu's sinful mouth is causing, but he must resist. He must.

"Were you surprised?" Rain gasps out as one of Phayu's hands rucks his shirt up. "I tried really, really hard this time."

"Very," Phayu murmurs directly into his ear. "Now never do it again, you naughty boy."

That's a promise that Rain doesn't plan to make.

They're interrupted by a delicate 'ting' 'ting', P'Ong tapping on a wine glass with a neutral expression on his face. Something tells Rain that this isn't the first time he's had to interrupt a pair of enthusiastic lovers. The chef smiles when he realizes he has both of their attentions. "Dinner is served, Sirs. There's fresh whipped cream and berries in the fridge for dessert. If that's satisfactory, I'll be on my way."

Rain surveys the table. The roses. The candles that he doesn't remember coming in, much less being lit. The feast. He almost wants to cry a little, it's so beautiful.

"Thank you, Phi," Phayu says, seemingly unaware of the moment Rain is having. "That'll be all."

The door has barely closed when Rain looks back up at Phayu. "I did good?"

"You did good, Nong. You did good."

Notes:

I tried very hard to get this done on V-day (after having thought of the idea... on V-day) but it didn't happen and that's okay! This is abit fluffier than I usually write, but I hope y'all enjoy.
