“Mario!”
“Luigi!”
The fight could be heard by all in the castle, and it wasn’t the first time. A few months had passed since the brothers had found the pipe leading to the Mushroom Kingdom, saved Brooklyn, and defeated Bowser. The event also started a new type of interaction for them: arguing — a lot.
“You said brothers do everything together!” Luigi shouted.
“I want to stay here, I have a life here, with Peach. You know this!” Mario yelled back.
“I want to stay here too!”
There was a pause. Some lowered voices. They discussed how the doctors back home said it would be unwise to keep traveling back and forth to the Mushroom Kingdom, and that their bodies would eventually be torn apart. They could stay in one or the other, and maybe visit the other side sometimes, but spend the majority of their time in one or the other.
“What about a life, huh?” Mario raised his voice again. “What about family?”
“You are my family, Mario!”
“You know what I mean! A wife, a house, a couple of kids!”
“I don’t care about any of that!”
“I just don’t want your life to be gone because of me!”
“Arghh, you are not listening to me, you never listen!”
A door slammed, and angry steps were heard until there was another door slammed.
Mario sighed and slumped his shoulders. He could not make Luigi see sense.
