"Woah, where the heck are we?" Dipper asked in surprise as he stared at an infinite white space.
Mabel, who stood beside him, was staring in a different direction. Straight forward.
"Dipper!" Mabel exclaimed excitedly, grabbing his attention.
"What Ma- AAAAAACK!"
Dipper skittered back, tripping and nearly falling on his back.
"Mabel, what the heck is THAT?!"
"It's the reader!" Mabel replied cheerfully.
"Wh-wha-" Dipper asked weakly.
"Y'know. The readers! The ones that we go on adventures for. We're staring at the fourth wall. "
"Mabel, there's no way. That would mean-"
"That we're in a story!" Mabel finished eccentrically.
Dipper stumbled back, heart pounding.
"Hey readers! What's up! I'm Mabel, but you can call me the girl of your dreams."
"Mabel! What are you doing?" Dipper asked panicked.
"Interacting with the reader! Do you know how rare of an opportunity this is?" Mabel replied cheerfully.
"No no no. No no no no! This can’t be happening!"
"You okay Dip dip?"
Dipper started laughing crazed.
"Are we even real? Has everything that has ever happened to us just created in fake? Are we just puppets of entertainment? Every decision we've ever made, was it genuine? Is what I'm saying right now is just being created for the author's own enjoyment?"
“Woah bro bro, relax! Just think about how awesome this is!”
“No Mabel, this is not awesome. We’re fictional characters! How are you okay with this?”
“I dunno.” Mabel shrugged smiling before returning her gaze forward
“Hey, whatcha reading this on? Your phone? Computer? Tablet?”
“Your scaring me Mabel.” Dipper pointed out.
Mabel stuck out her tongue. “Your no fun, you know.”
Dipper groaned, giving up on his sister.
“Okay, we need a plan. First, assess the situation. We are somewhere in emptiness. There’s a ‘reader’ and apparently we're in a story.”
Dipper pulled out the journal, flipping frantically through the pages.
“Come on come on, there’s got to be something about this…” he growled.
However he soon reached the end of the journal with not even a sliver of information regarding his situation.
“Gosh dang it! Of course there’s nothing…” Dipper huffed, putting it back into his jacket.
He began to pace, thinking hard. What happened before this? How did they even get here? Dipper stopped, blinking.
“Can you remember what brought us here?”
Mabel thought for a moment, staring up into the white void.
“Nope. Weird. Can you?”
“No, that’s the thing I can’t either.” growled Dipper, beginning to pace.
“Maybe this is a self-contained story? One that doesn’t affect the main story line in any way?” Mabel asked. “Ooo, like a fanfiction!”
“A fanfiction?” Dipper cried exasperated.
Of all things, a fanfiction. He had his swing at Mabel’s fanfiction. It was horrible, all she read were Y/N x Characters. He was glad she kept away from any…graphic stories.
As much as he hated to admit it, what Mabel suggested made sense. If this did not fall with a canon story line, then there wouldn’t be a rhyme of a reason to what was happening to them now.
“So we’re alternate versions of ourselves in a fanfiction, with the real versions of us being an official story…”
Dipper collapsed, the realization of the implications hitting him.
“Not real…copies..I can’t…” Dipper mumbled, clutching his knees to his chest.
“Hey Dipper, I think I see the end of the story!” Mabel called after him.
“Wait, WHAT?! Can’t we stop it?!” Dipper exclaimed, jumping to his feet in panic.
“Doesn’t look like it.” Mabel replied.
“No no NO! What will happen?! We’ll- we’ll stop existing!” Dipper cried.
“Well, I guess that’s all. Bye reader!”
“NO NO NO IT CAN’T END NO PLEA-”
