Marriage of Incovenience

Summary:

Kagome returned to the modern era after the battle with Naraku was over. She finds herself inextricably drawn to Sesshomaru. Sesshomaru is looking for a new wife, purely in a platonic sense, his last marriage ending badly. What happened in the past to have Sesshomaru and Kagome be drawn to each other? Will Kagome settle for a marriage of inconvenience to be close to Sesshomaru?

Notes:

Here's my new story! First one I've written in a LONG time, hope you like it.

Chapter Text

Kagome returned to the present day over two years ago. Passing through the well for the last time. It had closed with a certain finality that she wasn’t expecting. Thinking back to the friends she’d left behind and the memories made her sad.

The Japan she’d returned to was very different from what it was. Demons and humans were civil to each other, and families had developed between them. It was very strange to see such a different world than what she remembered.

Kagome had looked for InuYasha when she first passed through and was surprised to find that he had taken a mate. What surprised her more was the fact that she felt only happiness for him, no resentment that his mate wasn’t her.

It wasn’t until she had seen an article on her phone with a picture of him in it. She held her breath at the picture of none other than Sesshomaru. He was in a suit, not his usual feudal attire. He was the most handsome creature that Kagome had ever seen.

It was only then that she remembered a few times with him in the past, helping each other and feeling confusion of the emotions rolling through her. Now seeing him she understood, she had feelings for him. There was something she couldn’t explain, drawing her to him. Even though they had barely interacted with him in the feudal era, something in her began to build.

It was then she dug a little deeper and found that he had been married and had twins, a boy, and a girl. Kagome was saddened that he had married, but what did she expect? If he even remembered her, it would have been a miracle with how their paths had only crossed a few times.

Kagome had spent quite a bit of time with InuYasha and his family and was surprised that he never had mentioned Sesshomaru. Did they not get a long still? With how everything had changed she assumed that there would be a reconciliation, even if it was shaky.

Kagome found herself thinking of Sesshomaru more and more, wondering what his life had been like. What his family was like, wishing, she didn’t even know what. She didn’t even know how to find him, or what she would say if she saw him.

It wasn’t until one day she was at InuYasha’s house that he announced Sesshomaru, and his children were coming over for dinner. Kagome’s head shot up and panic filled her. Sesshomaru was coming here?

“I didn’t think you had kept in contact with Sesshomaru, InuYasha,” Kagome tried to cover up her racing heartbeat.

“Keh, why would you think that?”

InuYasha’s mate Sakura chimed in, “Perhaps, Honey, because you haven’t mentioned him at all since Kagome has been back. What would you think she would assume?”

InuYasha ducked his head, “Well, he’s coming.”

Kagome excused herself and went to the bathroom. Standing over the sink and taking deep breaths. She looked in the mirror at herself. Why was she so nervous? He wouldn’t remember her. There was nothing to get worked up about. But just the thought of seeing him again made her stomach flip.

She ran her hands through her hair to straighten it, pinched her cheeks and looked herself over. She was older, had more life experience, looking into her eyes, she knew she was beautiful. But with how Sesshomaru could be so cold and stoic, he could easily rip through one’s confidence very easily.

Kagome exited the bathroom and came out to help Sakura with dinner. Perhaps she would get more out of her than InuYasha.

“InuYasha hadn’t mentioned that he and Sesshomaru had reconciled.”

Sakura and InuYasha’s children ran through the kitchen and Sakura smiled, “It was after WWI that they decided to let the past be. I met InuYasha soon after that and we married.”

Kagome smiled; she had heard Sakura talk often of it. She also was a hanyou and InuYasha had saved her from being run over by a car. He had reprimanded her for making him save her. But very quickly the couple had fallen in love and soon were married.

“How did Sesshomaru meet his wife?” She tried to sound nonchalant.

Sakura smiled, “There’s was an advantageous match. For Sesshomaru to continue to keep his power and prestige he married into another demon family. That was after WWII.”

Kagome swallowed, trying not to be jealous and have Sakura smell it on her. She masked her scent with her reiki.

“They soon had their twins and seemed the happiest couple, at least on the outside.”

Kagome looked over at her, waiting for her to continue.

“They got divorced about ten years ago, and Sesshomaru confided in my that it hadn’t been a pleasant marriage for a long time.”

Kagome dipped her head, “Should you be telling me this Sakura? I would think Sesshomaru wouldn’t be happy that you shared that with me.”

Sakura smiled, “I have my reasons for telling you.”

The doorbell rang and Kagome looked up from the counter, trepidation setting in. Here it was, she wasn’t prepared at all for what kind of reaction she would get from Sesshomaru when he walked through the door.

She could hear the door open and InuYasha and Sesshomaru conversing. More sounds from the children as they all greeted each other. She heard their footsteps getting closer, and Kagome wiped her hands on a towel.

The moment he stepped through the door Kagome couldn’t breathe. Sakura looked over at her smiling, knowing. He entered behind InuYasha, but still had that regal appearance he had always carried with him. Making her feel foolish and insignificant that she would be this nervous. Again she couldn’t explain it, something was drawing her to him. Some base pull, that she had no idea what it was. Something carnal.

Sesshomaru’s eyes latched onto her, no recognition in them. She quelled her disappointment. Of course he wouldn’t remember her.

“Sesshomaru, you remember the Miko Kagome,” InuYasha introduced them.

Kagome bowed. She looked back up into his amber eyes, hoping he would remember her. He looked her up and down as if trying to place her.

“Ah, yes, I do remember you vaguely, traipsing around in some obscene outfit with my brother and his companions.”

Kagome reddened. That was all? No other memories of that night? She willed her emotions to calm down. Thankful that she still had her reiki covering her scent. She wanted to run from the room but knew that was impossible.

“It’s nice to see you again after all of this time Sesshomaru,” she said.

He nodded and left the room behind InuYasha. Kagome released her breath. Sakura came up beside her.

“I guess he hasn’t changed much,” Kagome whispered.

Sakura looked out the door they had just exited, then back at Kagome, “He has his reasons for being as stoic as ever, Kagome. Don’t let that deter you.”

Kagome looked over at Sakura with surprise. “Whatever do you mean?”

Sakura smiled, “I can tell you have feelings for him, Kagome. You hide it well, but I am your friend, and a woman, I can tell. And there is something else…”

Kagome looked at her quizzically, “Thank you for keeping my secret.”

Sakura nodded. The two proceeded to get the food to the table for everyone to enjoy. With two more children added to InuYasha’s clan of four, it was an interesting meal. After the children were done, they left the table to go and play so the adults could have a conversation.

Kagome tried to steal glances at Sesshomaru, but he didn’t even turn to her. He conversed with InuYasha, and Kagome was happy they had repaired their relationship to some degree.

She heard InuYasha’s words drift to her, “Kagome would know, she’s a matchmaker.”

All eyes turned to her, what?

“I am looking for a new wife, Miko. Would you be able to help this Sesshomaru?”

Kagome swallowed, not knowing what to say. She dipped her head, “Of course Sesshomaru, I can help you.”

What else could she say? ‘I would gladly help you, jump into that position for you myself.’

“Good, is there a time perhaps next week I can stop by your office to get things underway?”

He didn’t waste any time. “Yes of course, Sesshomaru. I can give you my card and you can drop by when you’re available next week. No need to make an appointment.

Sesshomaru nodded and turned his attention back to InuYasha. She felt dismissed again. Apparently, all she was worth was what she could give him by way of finding a wife. She tried to hide how she felt, suddenly disappointed that he was looking for another wife. She would have thought that he wouldn’t want to get married again, but it had been ten years since his divorce.

Sakura grabbed her hand and Kagome looked up to see a smile. She returned it and they started talking.

When they were leaving Sesshomaru was kind enough to walk her to her car. They walked by each other in silence.

“Thank you again, Miko, for helping this Sesshomaru in his search for a new wife.”

Kagome stopped and smiled, his children running around them. “Of course. I’m glad to see that you are moving on with your life.”

Sesshomaru frowned, had she said too much?

Before he could say anything, she went on, “Sakura told me a little of your marriage and I read in some articles how you were divorced ten years ago.”

Sesshomaru nodded, “Such is the way of having your life plastered amongst the internet. I would rather my life be private.”

Kagome smiled, “I’m sure you do, but with how well you have done for yourself, it’s somewhat hard to do that. Rest assured; I will be of the utmost private in our affairs.”

“Thank you for that Miko. I have confidence in your abilities if the past has anything to go by.”

She looked at him, confused. “You took your job seriously when we crossed paths and I know you apply that to whatever you do.”

Kagome was pleased and smiled, “Thank you Sesshomaru. I believe that was a compliment.”

Sesshomaru stilled, and a small smirk appeared on his lips.

“I guess I will see you next week sometime.” They had come to her car, and she got her keys out.

“I will have my office call you to give you a time of when I would be by, so you’re not completely taken by surprise.” An unspoken thought going between them.

Kagome nodded, understanding, “I will make sure no one is in the office, Sesshomaru, to make sure you have the utmost privacy.”

He nodded; glad she could tell what he desired.

“I hope you have a nice evening,” she climbed into her car. He rounded his children up and got them in the car.

Once in he looked at her driving off hoping their relationship would be advantageous.
