He will repeat again, his kids were killing it. Their dances were synced (Chan had reminded himself to thank the supporting dancers afterward), facial expressions were unique and attractive, vocals were stable and powerful, makeup done, outfits fitted, hair styled— the stage presence was there, and the audience was hyped. Chan was proud. Very.

 

They’re preparing for a song transition, they’re getting into place, he and Changbin are staged on a lifted platform, Jisung, Hyunjin and Minho stay on the main stage while the maknaes are directed onto a protruding stage that’s closer to the audience. Chan can hear the increasingly loud cheers from the fans when they see how close Felix, Seungmin and Innie are. The atmosphere is getting heated, he can tell that the members are pumped, fired, and in their element.

 

That’s probably where things went wrong.

 

The song starts, his kids are singing, and from the elevated stage, Chan can see the audience and the other idol groups jumping up and down to the rhythm. Add in the random ad-libs from 3RACHA, and you have yourself a Stray Kids Concert. During an Award Show. Chan’s mouth is sore from smiling so much, Changbin is getting a bit wild with the improvisations, and Chan can see the rest of his kids having the time of their lives. It’s going great. Chan. Is. Proud.

 

They reach the bridge of the song, and it’s the maknaes’ time to shine. Felix starts off with a deep bass-like tune and the cheers are expectedly deafening. Jeongin sings the melody with his unique vocal tone and Chan’s heart melts at how beautiful he sounds. Seungmin ad-libs a high long note that leaves everyone and their parents breathless (perhaps Seungmin is a breath stealer and uses them to sing really really long notes? Who knows).

 

The audience is captivated, the hyungs are captivated, his kids are relaxed and that’s when shit hits the fan.

 

Chan isn’t sure why security men aren’t background-checked before they’re given the job, but they better be after he’s done with them. Actually—better yet, next time, his youngest kids won’t be put on a separate platform away from the rest of the group with hundreds of people in between and only one guard.

 

He can barely describe the feeling of pure horror and distress that washes over into his body when a FUCKING (all capitals because that’s the only way Chan can express his emotions) bodyguard, leaps onto the stage and grabs Innie’s face with his big ass hand. Chan didn’t know they were part of a shoujo anime, but here they were, getting attacked by someone who was supposed to keep them from getting attacked.

 

Chan is not embarrassed to admit the raw and feral scream that rips out of his throat, his members are getting harassed (which is an understatement, in Chan’s humble opinion), idol image be damned. Besides, he’s pretty sure he hears equally guttural screeches from the rest of the members, but he’s too focused on his kids who are in danger to really think about else. Thank the Lord for Changbin, who pulls Chan back so he doesn’t leap over the railing and fall to his death trying to get to them.

 

“Are you stupid?!” Changbin hisses into his ear, and yeah, maybe Chan is, for trying to jump fifteen meters to the ground without any safety equipment. “You know you’re not actually a kangaroo, right? I’m pretty sure even they die trying to jump from big heights.”

 

Chan doesn’t mean to growl like a feral animal, especially not at Changbin, but he does.

“Binnie, our kids are getting jumped by a grown-ass man who’s probably buffer than you.”

 

“I know, idiot,” Changbin sounds just as terrified as Chan and eternally more exasperated, “But do you really think dying will solve any of this?” He starts rapidly knocking on Chan’s head like he’s performing Backdoor on 10 times the speed, and Chan successfully has a headache, “There’s really nothing we can do. We’ll just have to hope that either our maknaes will defend themselves—which they can, or the others will do something—which they will. You know them.”

 

Chan groans pitifully, and they both slump to the floor, “You’re right, I’m sorry, Bin.” Changbin is probably just as stressed as him and here he is, acting rashly and difficult. What kind of leader is he?

 

“It’s fine, Chan-hyung,” Changbin sighs and pats his shoulder consolingly, “I would’ve let you jump if it didn’t mean that you’d shatter the entire lower half of your body.” Chan weakly laughs and opens his mouth to say something, but is cut off by a very familiar resounding voice that carries across the entire stadium.

 

In mortification and disbelief, Chan covers everything on his face aside from his eyes, and Changbin starts sputtering, too shocked to form proper sentences, “Wha—Why—What. What is he doing. Why is he—hyung, please, why is Hyunjin—“

 

“I don’t know, Bin. I don’t know.”

If Minho had to use one word to describe how he was feeling, it would be Tired. And Stressed. Really, really stressed. He ignores the faint voice in his mind that sounds like Seungmin, teasing him about that being three words. Well fuck Seungmin, he’s one-fifth of the reason Minho’s head is pounding like someone dropped a bowling ball and seven Changbins on it.

 

Speaking of Changbin, Minho desperately hopes that he and Chan are still on the platform and aren’t splattered across the floor in a mix of blood and meat. That would leave him to take care of four undomesticated quadruplets, a cranky baby that only eats bread and three cats. Minho does not have the physical, mental or spiritual capacity to do any of that.

 

He’s not sure how long he spends daydreaming a nightmare, but when he comes to, Hyunjin is dangerously leaning over the crowd, pointing frantically at the maknaes. Minho doesn’t think about it as much because he’s thinking about his dongsaengs who are either getting beaten up or are beating up. He very desperately hopes it’s the latter.

 

Tonight, Minho is all for desperate hope.

 

Not in Hyunjin, though. Not in Hyunjin, who just leaned his entire upper body across the crowd. Not in Hyunjin, who is spreading his arms out wide as people carefully grip him. Minho doesn’t understand what he’s doing until—

Oh.

 

Oh.

 

I think I’m going insane, Minho dazily stares.

 

Hyunjin is crowd surfing.

 

“Without me!?” He faintly hears Jisung yell before Minho has the time to process what Hyunjin is doing. Now there’s two of them. Crowd surfing. Crowd. Surfing.

 

Minho feels himself sway.

 

Crowd surfing?

 

Crowd Surfing?!

 

CROWD SURFING???

 

Yes. Minho will use all capitals because if there’s one thing that Minho can control right now, it’s his capitalisation.

 

Chan would be proud, not that Minho cares.

 

“Lee Know-ssi?” A supporting dancer timidly approaches him, “Are you alright? Do you need water?” There’s a plastic bottle in his face and Minho forces his shaking hands to take it.

 

“Ye—Yes,” He croaks, voice cracking awkwardly, “Thank you. For the water.” The dancer nods politely and disappears from Minho’s blurry perception. He sighs tiredly and lets the water slide down his scratchy throat. It helps, even if his mouth immediately dries up right after. At least he now has a hydrated body and a clearer head.

 

Okay. Alright. Minho just has to focus. What can he do? Well, he can follow Hyunjin and Jisung’s lead and CROWD SURF???, but that’s stupid, dangerous and from the way Hyunjin has his eyes squinted and Jisung is puffing his cheeks, it’s painful. So, no. CROWD SURFING??? is not an option.

 

Second option? Minho uses his critical thinking skills and the alternative makes itself clear. Use the trapdoor that leads underground and take the path to the protruding stage, where his maknaes are and where stupid Hyunjin and Jisung are CROWD SURFING??? to. This is a better option. Better than whatever the two idiots are doing, at least. It might be dusty and small and possibly dangerous, but it’s a better option. Besides, his dongsaengs did it earlier when they had to move stages, so why can’t he?

 

Third option. Stay where he is and desperately hope that his maknaes can hold out and kick ass until HyunSung get there and do something stupid but effective that will probably end up on the news (derogatory). That is not an option. Fuck no. Minho will not leave his precious, naive, young dongsaengs (and Seungmin) to fend for themselves and put his desperate hope in Hwang Hyunjin and Han Jisung. No matter how much he knows they can defend each other and their members. Chan raised him better than this.

 

So, no CROWD SURFING??? and no sitting on his ass. The trapdoor is the only option right now, and Minho knows that Changbin and Chan are eating their fists and feet (and hopefully not but probably eachother) in worry and guilt because they can’t do anything. At least, not without breaking their legs first.

 

The clock is ticking. Every second he just stands there is a chance that his members could get seriously hurt. Hyunjin and Jisung may have chosen a stupid route, but at least they were fast. At least they acted immediately. At least they’re doing something. At least they’re trying their best.

 

Minho will try his best too.

 

Forcing the trapdoor open, he takes one glance at the protruding stage, stares down into the abyss of darkness underneath him, and jumps.

Seungmin is having fun.

 

The crowd is dancing, Yongbok and Innie are smiling, and that’s all Seungmin could ever ask for.

 

So he lets himself relax into his high notes, closing his eyes and focusing on the music, that’s why he’s here, at this award show. To sing and please the audience.

 

Maybe he drifts towards the edge of the stage during the song, that’s all good, the cheers seem happy that he’s there. It’s fine if he’s slightly separated from Felix and I.N, it’s only a couple meters.

 

Those ‘couple meters’ meant everything.

 

Seungmin hears it before he sees it. A sharp yelp from Jeongin that’s abruptly cut short. Suspiciously cut short. It’s not the ‘Felix running up to Jeongin and smothering him in a tight hug’ cut short, it’s ’someone who is not supposed to be on stage, is on stage and Jeongin is in danger’ cut short.

 

He whirls around just in time to see Felix being flung off stage and into the barriers that separate the idols from the crowd. More than anything, Seungmin wants to run up to him and cover him from whatever’s happening, but he can’t do that. Not when there’s a buff ass bodyguard on the stage, gripping Innie’s face like he’s going to crush it.

 

Seungmin reflexively steps back until the heels of his feet are teetering dangerously over the edge of the platform. His mind is screaming at him to run, it sounds suspiciously like Innie and Felix, but Seungmin ignores it. There’s nowhere to run to, anyway. And even if there was, he would not abandon his members to save his own skin. Only Asshole Assholes did that, and Seungmin was a Caring Asshole, if he had a say in it.

 

His heart is pounding in his chest, his vision flits around rapidly and for a moment, he wonders if he’s having a panic attack.

 

That’s fine, he’ll just channel that adrenaline into saving his friends. Because the rest of the members won’t be able to get to the stage in time and also because if he doesn’t act now, Innie might get his face ripped off and Seungmin swears on his vocal chords that he will not let that happen.

 

He lets his eyes dart around and look for something that might be useful. They linger on Yongbok, and Seungmin sees him picking himself up and gritting his teeth in what might be anger. Then, his eyes snap up, and Seungmin catches the fire and fury in them, something he doesn’t ever see in them. Especially not in public.

 

Well that’s great! His heart swells. Seungmin kind of disagrees because Felix is absolutely terrifying when angry. It’s never to the members, though, so maybe Seungmin does think it’s great. If only because that guard is going to get the beating of a lifetime.

 

His eyes land on a pile of rubber balls and Seungmin remembers that every group was supposed to throw them to the crowd after their performance.

 

That’s too bad. Seungmin hopes STAY won’t mind the tainted balls.

 

Making sure the guard’s back is turned, he sprints over to the box and takes a handful. They aren’t as good as he had hoped, but they’re sure to bruise if thrown correctly. Which is how he’ll throw them. Correctly. Y’know, because he’s an ex-baseball player?

 

The guy is huge and fleshy, and his muscles rival Changbin’s. Changbin’s heart is bigger, though, and Seungmin thinks that’s more important.

 

Licking his dry lips, he clutches the balls with one arm and aims with the other. He’s targeting the arm that’s holding Jeongin. Channeling everything he’s ever learned about baseball, he swings his arm back and throws. Luck does not seem to be on his side because the guard turns, and Seungmin ends up firing five balls at the other shoulder—the one that doesn’t have Jeongin.

 

He doesn’t feel relieved at all, even when a sharp yell reverberates across the already loud stadium. In the end, Innie is still in pain and Seungmin is sure that if he doesn’t do something soon, his dongsaeng won’t be able to breathe.

 

His heart says fuck it, so Seungmin does.

 

Lunging towards the guard, Seungmin clings to him like he’s a life buoy and Seungmin is drowning.

 

Seungmin isn’t the strongest member. Not physically, at least, and everyone knows this. Maybe he’s second to Hyunjin, but Hyunjin lives with 3RACHA now, so it’s definitely Seungmin who is weakest. He doesn’t care, honestly. Just because he’s the weakest doesn’t mean he’s weak, and if he can’t be strong, he makes up for it with his flexibility. He’s nimble, with lanky limbs and long legs. His punches and kicks might be weaker than Changbin’s, but they’re rapid and he’s smart enough to know where it hurts bad.

 

Swinging his leg around in a way only he and Hyunjin could, he digs his heel into the guy’s ribs and then does it again just to make sure. Maybe he hears a crack, maybe he doesn’t. Seungmin only meant for it to be distracting.

 

It works, the guard is successfully distracted (Yay! Go him!) and he focuses less on Innie and more on Seungmin. Despite this, Innie’s face is still in the man’s hold (Not Yay. Nay).

 

“Dumb mutt,” He hears a snarl, and the jostling gets more and more violent, but Seungmin stays stubborn, “Get the fuck off me!”

 

Seungmin thinks the mutt insult is very creative, what about heart and mind?

 

Eight points! Heart chirps.

 

Six, Mind shoots back, And, if he’s going to call you a mutt, why not show him you are one?

 

It sounds like a horrible idea. A horribly stupid idea. Only stupid, idiotic people who attempt such a stupid, idiotic idea. Only people like  Hwang Hyunjin and Han Jisung would attempt such a stupid, idiotic idea. No, even stupid, idiotic people like Hwang Hyunjin and Han Jisung wouldn’t attempt an idea like this. Seungmin doesn’t even know what they’re doing in the current moment, but it is probably (hopefully) less stupid than whatever Seungmin is thinking about doing. Seungmin can’t even believe that he’s contemplating what he’s contemplating. What about his idol image?!

 

What about Innie? Heart reminds him, and it’s nearly embarrassing how fast he caves. Maybe he is idiotic and stupid, but he’s idiotic and stupid for his idiot, stupid dongsaeng, and in Seungmin’s righteous opinion, that cancels out the stupidity and idiocy of the idea itself.

 

Harshly pulling the guy’s uninjured arm, Seungmin finds the skin near the hand, twists it painfully and chomps.

 

The resulting scream and the sound of a body being dropped are a lot more satisfying than before. Seungmin bites down like he’s eating a drumstick, and doesn’t let go even when he’s lifted off the ground and is left dangling in the air.

 

Ten points!! Heart claps happily, not that Seungmin is paying much attention. He kind of wishes he had his braces on, but he’ll use whatever he has.

 

The bodyguard is probably shaking his arm, because Seungmin feels his world go up and down around thirty times before he decides it’s enough. Kicking up, he doesn’t know what he hits with his foot but he really hopes it’s a weak point. Seungmin gratefully lands on the stage with a loud bang and his eyes immediately dart to Jeongin, who is in the middle of a roundhouse kick.

 

Innie spins twice to gather momentum and then shoots his leg out right into the guy’s crotch. Seungmin decides right then and there that Innie is Powerful and maybe a bit cool. Jeongin goes for behind the shins next and sweeps the guard right off his feet, landing on his back with enough force that he might’ve broken his spine.

 

The guard seems furious now (Seungmin is honestly very surprised he isn’t writhing on the floor after that outrageous kick), but Seungmin very intelligently pulls Innie away just before he gets kicked in the face. Pulling Innie behind his back, he shoots a few more balls in the man’s chest, just to aggravate his probably broken ribs.

 

The guy is obstinate, Seungmin will give him that. He goes in for another sloppy kick that Seungmin can easily dodge even with Innie in his arms. Annoyed, he snarls and steps back, all he wants to do is check on Innie and Felix—wherever he is.

 

As he’s looking around for wherever Felix could be hiding, he spots a pair of wide eyes peaking out of the slightly open trapdoor.

 

Minho-hyung.

 

Seungmin would never do this on any other occasion, but he could really kiss Minho right now.

 

He glances at the guard, who is rapidly approaching them, and runs over the trapdoor, leading him over it as well. The guard takes one step above the hatch and none more because Minho shoots out of it and punches his jaw like a superhero. It’s kind of funny-looking and pretty badass. Seungmin will tease him about it later.

 

Going over to an edge of the stage, the one farthest away from the guard, Seungmin lets Innie sit down and he inspects his face for any bruises.

 

“Hyung,” Innie whines, “I’m fine, all he did was hold my face. You were the one who got shook like a salt shaker. Are you sure he didn’t mess up your guts and brain when he did that?”

 

Seungmin glares at his dongsaeng, “Well, if you’re making jokes like that, I think you’re okay.”

 

“I am.”

 

There’s a distant screech of pain and they both whip their heads to the source.

 

The sight is not something he expects, but it is welcome all the same.

 

“Wow,” Innie breathes, clutching Seungmin’s hand, “Felix-hyung is really cool.”

 

They watch, starry-eyed, as Felix swings the guard from his legs and leaps into the air, making both him and the guard suspended for a moment. During that, he rapidly kicks the guy’s stomach—maybe twenty times, before he flips him onto the ground with a resounding crash. Seungmin catches Minho standing off to the side with a proud smile on his face.

 

“He’s so cool,” Innie repeats. Seungmin wants to agree, when he notices two familiar bodies out of the corner of his eye, heading straight for him.

 

“Oh, honey!” Hyunjin cries, dropping to his knees on stage and bringing his dongsaengs into a hug, “Are you okay? I was so worried because I saw that huge guy attack Innie and it was kind of hard to see what happened after that because I was concentrating on not crushing the people under me—“

 

“What?!” Seungmin shrieks, pulling away just enough to clearly see Hyunjin’s tear-stricken face, “You were what? How did you even get here!?”

 

“We crowd surfed,” Hyunjin shrugs, like it’s normal, he goes back to ruffling Jeongin’s hair and kissing his forehead despite the protests, “Oh, my baby, I’m so glad you’re okay.” Seungmin is horrified to discover that biting someone may not have been the stupidest thing they did tonight, and he really doesn’t want to brush over the crowd surfing, but they have plenty of time to talk about it later.

 

Jeongin looks like he wants to deny any implications that he was Not okay, but he sees the pure relief and terror in Hyunjin’s eyes, and instead says, “Thanks, hyung.”

 

“I think I saw Jisung with you,” Seungmin decides to change the subject, “Where is he?”

 

“He’s dissing the half-conscious bodyguard with a freestyle rap,” Hyunjin motions his head to where Jisung is standing menacingly above the body of the guard, Felix and Minho next to him with hands over their mouths as they struggle not to laugh. “You guys really beat him up, I’m so proud.”

 

“He had Innie,” Seungmin points out, “Anyone would do the same if they were there.”

 

Hyunjin nods sagely in agreement, “As they should.” Jeongin sputters, an attempt to deny such a thing, but both Seungmin and Hyunjin know that he secretly loves it.

 

“Where’s Channie and Binnie-hyung?” Jeongin asks instead, peering around the stage.

 

“They’re pissing themselves with worry,” Hyunjin points to the main stage, where Chan and Changbin remain stuck, meters above ground. They’re clutching the railing of the platform like they’re prison bars.

 

“Oh,” Jeongin coughs.

 

“Let’s send them a heart,” Seungmin suggests, bringing his arms up in a V shape. Innie and Hyunjin quickly follow with the heart’s curves.

 

They get a BinChan heart in response, so he hopes that’s a good sign.

 

“Oh!” Jeongin says again, but this time it sounds thoughtful, “We have microphones.”

 

“Oh yeah,” Hyunjin frowns, bringing Seungmin’s newly turned-on mic to his lips, he screams, “We’re okay!!” It echoes across the entire stadium and quiets the incessant shouts of the crowd.

 

There is a pause. Seungmin is very impressed that Hyunjin was able to silence hundreds of thousands of people.

 

The deafening silence is a huge contrast to the previous noise. It stretches far, wide, and thin. It’s starting to become awkward.

 

Then he hears a loud “Yeahhh!!” From Changbin. It’s raw and filled with worry that’s coated in tentative ease, but Chan starts valiantly clapping, and it’s enough to start a rounding applause across every corner of the stadium.

 

For some reason, the atmosphere isn’t enough to keep Seungmin from hearing some of the rapid-fire words that are coming out of Jisung’s mouth.

 

“You look easy to draw,” The boy spits, as the ‘guard’ is carried away by proper security, “Hyunjin—no, Channie-hyung could draw you perfectly with his eyes closed, mouth shut, nose blocked and ears covered and no prior knowledge to what you looked like.” Seungmin allows himself to openly gape along with Hyunjin and Jeongin because what was that.

 

“I wanna draw on his cast!” Felix claps happily, albeit morbidly, “Do you think he’d appreciate a signature from me?”

 

“That’s so petty,” Minho snorts, “I’m in.”

 

“We are not visiting him in hospital,” Seungmin hisses, because if Chan and Changbin can’t be there, he will, unfortunately, have to be the voice of reason.

 

Hyunjin shivers, “I don’t want to think about that guy anymore. Let’s talk about something else.”

 

“You guys are probably going to get lectured by Chan-hyung,” Jisung offers, scratching his cheek.

 

“Why?” Felix frowns, “We were just defending ourselves.”

 

“Yeah! And Minho-hyung,” Jeongin tugs on Minho’s sleeve, “You also punched him!”

 

“What do you mean also?” Minho huffs, “You didn’t punch him at all—none of you did. Innie, you kicked the guy in the balls. I’m proud and it was really badass, but Chan-hyung isn’t going to like that.”

 

“Chan-hyung won’t care if it’s Innie,” Hyunjin points out.

 

“True. I’m more worried about Seungmin—who baseballed the guy and bit him, and Yongbokie who showcased his very threatening black-belt taekwondo skills for the entire world to see.”

 

Minho shifts his glare to Seungmin, “I know you know how to box. Why did you have to use anything but your fists?!”

 

“I wasn’t thinking, okay!?” He frantically waves his hands in front of his face in an attempt to defend himself, “Innie was hurt, so all I was thinking about was to get him out of there.”

 

“So your first instinct was to bite him instead of—I dunno, punching his shoulder?”

 

“He really is our puppy,” Hyunjin sniffles, bringing Seungmin closer to him.

 

“Why are you crying,” Seungmin weakly replies.

 

“Anyway,” Jisung waves whatever’s happening with HyunMin, off, “Innie’s gonna get a pass ‘cause he’s the youngest, Yongbok’s gonna get a pass ‘cause he’s the favourite child, and Chan-hyung kind of has a big fat platonic crush on Seungminnie, so he’ll also get a pass.”

 

“So we’ll all get off scot-free?” Felix smiles brightly.

 

“What about Minho-hyung?” Innie doesn’t miss an opportunity to throw his hyung under the bus.

 

Jisung shrugs, “Chan-hyung is whipped as heck for Minho-hyung, he’ll be fine.” Minho nods his head condescendingly.

 

“He’s kind of ‘whipped’ for all of us,” Seungmin remarks.

 

“That is true.”

“Just please promise me you’ll be more careful next time,” Chan sighs. His food has long been abandoned and Jisung is debating whether or not to eat it for him.

 

“Innie was in danger,” Felix frowns, not promising anything, “Plus, you would do the same if not worse, hyung.”

 

“I’m not talking about you or Seungmo, Lix,” Chan fixes his gaze on Jeongin, “Next time, if someone comes running at you, don’t assume it’s because of some technical difficulties. Just punch him in the face and run away. Crowd surf if you need to, but don’t let anyone you don’t know touch you.”

 

Innie hangs his head low, “I’m sorry, Channie-hyung.”

 

Chan’s face melts, reaching over the table to ruffle his hair, “No, don’t be sorry, no one could’ve predicted what would happen. It’s not your fault. And it’s good that you trusted the security guard—but from now on, we can’t do that. Not after last night.”

 

Innie lifts his head and nods reverently with resolve, “You’re right. I promise, hyung.”

 

“Good,” Chan smiles and straightens his back, “This goes for everyone, alright? I’m giving you full permission to kick someone in the crotch in self-defense. I don’t care if you’re performing and the entire world sees you flip a guy on television, your safety always comes first.”

 

“Yes, hyung!” Seven mouths chorus with varying levels of enthusiasm. It’s followed by an incessant round of applause that probably won’t stop for a while because they know they have a thing for clapping but they don’t know why.

 

“Anyway,” Hyunjin raises his hand and quietens the rest, “If we’re done here, I want to start movie night.”

 

“Yeah, sure,” Jisung nods as he moves towards the couch, “I think it’s Yongbokie’s turn to pick?” Felix cheers quietly.

 

“I’ll clean the dishes,” Minho says, gathering the empty bowls.

 

“I’ll help,” Seungmin immediately stands up.

 

Changbin shovels the rest of his food into his mouth, “I’ll also help!”
Minho somehow eyes him with vague disgust and approval, “You can start with cleaning up the bits of food that just came out of your mouth when you said that.” Changbin nods apologetically.

 

Chan opens his mouth to probably also offer and help—like three people cleaning isn’t already enough, but Minho takes one glance at him and shuts him down, “And you can help after you finish your food, hyung.” Chan gives a sulky pout in response, knowing that they’ll be done by the time he finishes, Minho ignores him.

 

Jeongin lazily sprawls all over the couch and Jisung follows instantly, gently laying himself over the younger, which earns a squawk that evolves into a minor brawl as they fight over who gets to keep their position. Hyunjin helps turn on the TV while Felix searches for a good movie. They end up joining JeongSung—who decided to compromise and sit like mostly normal people—and collapse limblessly onto the couch to wait for the others.

 

Chan comes next, choosing to take a pillow and sit on the floor in front of the couch. he throws snacks behind him like he’s a bride throwing flowers, and the others fight to catch them like it’s money and they’re poor. Seungmin and Minho take the armchair—meant for one person, while Changbin joins Chan and mushily cuddles him, it is merrily reciprocated.

 

The position they find themselves in is routine, it’s familiar. The movie is good, but nobody is really paying attention. They don’t usually, not unless they find a scene relatable to them. Chan thinks that Felix picked a boring movie on purpose. If only to create an intimate atmosphere that reminds him of his family and how comfortable they make him feel.

 

Jeongin is snoring away on Jisung’s shoulder, and Jisung is snoring away in the popcorn bowl, a blanket hazardously thrown across them. Hyunjin is giddily braiding Felix’s hair as Felix gently massages Changbin’s scalp with his soft hands. 2Min are exchanging hushed whispers and private conversations that they would never be allowed to have in public. Chan could be watching the movie, but he is much happier watching his friends.

 

Hopefully, last night won’t happen ever again, Chan thinks to himself, There better not be a ‘next time’. He hopes. It’s not desperate, because Chan knows that it can happen again, no matter the amount of hope he gives. But if it happens again, he will protect the kids. He may not have been able to before, and that may have been out of his control, but if there’s one thing he can control, it’s the stage placement.

 

He doesn’t care if he has to fight management to make sure his members aren’t separated, he will do it. As their leader, there is nothing he will not do.

 

“Hyung,” He turns his head to see Minho, curled like a cat around a sleeping Seungmin and whispering loudly enough for Chan to just barely hear, “You’re thinking too hard,” He squishes his cheek into Seungmin’s chest and closes his eyes. Yawning, “You can think about your leader stuff tomorrow. Just hug Binnie and go to sleep.”

 

So Chan does.
