Chapter 1: At the Drive-In

Chapter Text

Satoru raked his fingers through his hair one more time before sighing. It just wasn’t doing what he wanted it to do at all. He had washed it three times, blow-dried it, and it still hung limp and flat. Part of him knew he shouldn’t have trusted Utahime to cut his hair again so soon, but he wanted a little change.

The cut did make his face glow, so he guessed it was worth it. Utahime told him that cutting his hair for a first date was a bit try-hard, but she still did it for Satoru. Best friend of the year, right there.

White tresses framed Satoru’s face, creating a nice contrast with his pale skin and sky blue eyes. He blew a lock out of his eyes and groaned. He knew he was trying too hard to look good for this date, but ever since Suguru asked him out during their film history class, Satoru had been concocting the perfect outfit ever since.

He wanted this date to go well because he really liked Suguru. They didn’t talk a whole lot, nothing more than the occasional small talk before the professor arrived and very, very light flirting. But that was all it took for Satoru to become smitten. He fell fast and hard every single time.

Satoru smoothed his red-striped shirt and adjusted the tiny checkered band of cloth he’d tied loosely at the base of his neck. The fabric itched a bit, but Satoru knew it complimented everything so well. That and it would draw attention to his neck, which was something he wanted. Utahime had told him he has nice clavicles, and Satoru decided he wouldn’t mind if Suguru noticed them as well. Hell, he just wanted Suguru to fall head over heels for him because Satoru already knew he was halfway there.

After one final glance at his appearance, Satoru ran to his room to check his phone, with a small smile of anticipation tugging at the corners of his mouth. How had he even gotten Suguru to ask him out in the first place?  He’d been crushing on the guy since the first time he saw him walk into the room at the beginning of the semester. Suguru had made quite the entrance that day.

He had strolled in, earbuds hanging from his ears, shiny hair up in a ponytail, and a black choker around his neck. It was like the whole moment happened in slow motion. Dark kohl-lined eyes met Satoru’s and it was like harps were being played and angels were singing.

It was at that moment, that he flicked his bangs out of his eyes and Satoru knew he was ruined. Ruined and then promptly thanked the gods because Suguru had ended up sitting right in front of him. It was a wonder that Satoru ever paid attention in class because even Suguru’s nape was attractive.

Satoru stared at his phone screen and then smiled. Apparently, Suguru was on his way and had picked up some snacks and drinks for them along the way. Satoru still didn’t know where they were going, but he liked surprises.

He just hoped that he didn’t do anything to embarrass himself on the date because he would never let himself live it down (and neither would Utahime because Satoru had a tendency to gush about Suguru to her on the daily). He unplugged his phone and glanced around his room for something to do that wouldn’t take much time.

His room wasn’t messy, but it was definitely lived in. His desk was littered with papers and post-its. He walked over to his desk to tidy it up and smiled at the little doodles of Suguru’s name in the margins. Oh yeah, he was smitten alright.

Satoru checked the time and saw that only five minutes had passed and sighed anxiously. Suguru had to be getting closer. His heart was ramming in his chest as he fidgeted with his black skinny jeans. He kept tugging on the loops and adjusting them (pulling them up too high and then yanking them back down) while he paced by his front door. Every minute felt like an hour and Satoru was pretty sure he was counting the seconds until Suguru arrived.

On the bright side, he was fortunate enough to have the shared house to himself. His flatmates, Utahime and Shoko, had gone off on a day trip down south to celebrate their third anniversary and this time Satoru finally had plans in lieu of being the third wheel. He didn’t mind tagging along with them, but after living with the two lovebirds, Satoru desperately wanted something like they had for himself.

He wanted his own boyfriend who would sleep in with him on the weekends and cuddle him at night. He wanted someone to love him and care for him like the way that Utahime and Shoko cared for each other. Satoru just wanted to be loved, honestly and if it happened to be Suguru, well that would be a dream come true.

Passing in front of his door one last time, Satoru chewed on the inside of his cheek. He wanted to play it cool so that Suguru would like him, but now all he could think about was how he was going to mess this up.

What if he and Suguru had a real conversation and Suguru decided he didn’t like anything Satoru had to say? What if they got into an argument about something fundamental? What if the date just went horribly wrong and Satoru needed to switch classes? Gods, he didn’t want that.

Satoru ran his fingers through his hair and then froze. Shit. This would be the first time Suguru would see his new cut. It wasn’t a huge change, but he did hope he would notice. Was he really trying this hard? All he could do was hope that somehow everything would work out.

He paused when he heard the rumbling of a car engine pull up in front of the house.

Suguru was here!

The telltale ping of Satoru’s phone made him almost jump and Satoru had to give himself a pep talk. It was just a date. Just a date with the guy Satoru had been crushing on for the whole semester. He slipped on his shoes and quickly headed out the door, where he promptly felt his jaw drop to the ground.

Sitting in a baby blue 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air convertible was the Suguru himself. He had on a pair of giant dark sunglasses, a slight smile, and a black leather jacket over a graphic t-shirt. He looked positively deadly and Satoru had to pick his jaw up off the ground before it got stuck there. He felt the heat creep into his cheeks as he hesitantly walked over to the passenger side and got in the car. He was sitting in Suguru’s car! This was a big deal!

“Hey,” Satoru half-whispered as he buckled himself in.

He was hoping to play it cool because right now he was trembling like an autumn leaf in the middle of a wind storm. He made sure not to look at Suguru face-on out of fear that he would combust into a million tiny Satorus that would in turn also explode.

Just being this close to Suguru and not in a school setting was pretty exciting. It wasn’t that he wasn’t popular back in high school – he was and he dated quite a bit, but Suguru made Satoru’s heart go pitter-patter and boom-boom-BOOM at the same time. It was quite the conundrum if you asked him.

“Hey yourself,” Suguru replied coolly and produced a pair of sunglasses for Satoru to put on. “It’s such a nice day isn’t it?”

Satoru put the sunglasses on and pulled down the visor to check his reflection before turning to Suguru and nodding shyly. “Yeah, it is. And um, thank you for picking me up.”

“Pleasure is all mine,” Suguru said and started the car.

He swung his arm over the bench seat as he backed out and Satoru took the chance to eye him as he did so. The curve of Suguru’s angled jaw was pronounced by the tilt of his head. He had a really nice jaw.

He also had thick fingers that made small impressions on the leather seats. The impressions lingered for a moment after Suguru returned both hands to the steering wheel, but not before giving Satoru a slight smile. He seemed to be in high spirits, which was more than Satoru could say because he was a ball of nerves.

Satoru immediately snapped his gaze to the windshield as they took off. He placed his sweaty palms onto his lap and gripped his thighs as Suguru drove. He couldn’t think of anything to say for the first twenty minutes due to the fact that his mind was completely blank aside from the image of Suguru’s impossibly nice hands, but that didn’t seem to bother Suguru.

In fact, after a while, Suguru flipped on the radio and the gentle crooning of Peggy Lee came through the speakers. It seemed Suguru had a penchant for the fifties and Satoru was not complaining. At least the song was pleasant to listen to, so he drummed his fingers to the melody while Suguru hummed it under his breath.

The more he learned about him, the more Satoru found himself smiling like a complete fool. Suguru had a nice voice and the subtle curve of his lips only made Satoru feel even gooier inside. He must have relaxed at some point because he realized he was leaning against the door, hand over the edge, catching the air currents as Suguru drove.

“Tell me, do you like Hitchcock films?” Suguru asked suddenly as they got onto the main highway.

Satoru snapped out of his thoughts and shook his head. He noted that they were heading out of town, but for some reason, he trusted that the surprise that Suguru had wouldn’t be a death trap. Still, he was not a fan of scary films. Plus, he knew Hitchcock had a penchant for thrillers and horror movies, but he didn’t want to not seem interesting, so he lied.

“Um, yeah I love him. He directed the….uh, The Birds, right?” He was secretly thankful that despite spending most of the film class fantasizing about Suguru’s nape some of the coursework had sunk in.

“Yeah, he has a bunch of classics,” Suguru replied and glanced over at Satoru for a brief second before looking back at the road. “Not many people enjoy that era of films, but I’m glad you do.”

“Yeah,” Satoru swallowed, feeling a pit of dread grow in his stomach.

Lying on a first date was not going to get him far. He regretted what he had said and hoped that Suguru would drop the topic for something else. That way he wouldn’t feel so guilty. But, that had him wondering why Suguru brought it up in the first place. He then pushed the sunglasses up on top of his head, keeping his pink hair from whipping around his face.

“Are we going to see a movie?”

“Mhm,” Suguru hummed with that same slight smile.

“You know, I had you pegged for someone who would think out of the box for a first date,” Satoru teased. He was going out on a limb and hoped he wasn’t crossing a line teasing Suguru, but it worked out for him.

“Why’s that?” Suguru asked and flicked the indicator just before he merged off the highway. He was a great driver and Satoru found that incredibly sexy.

Satoru glanced around to see where they had ended up and raised his eyebrows in surprise. He had not realized they’d driven so far or for so long. He took a moment to think of an answer.

“Um, well the car, the music, and well you seem like the type to be creative?” Satoru literally facepalmed then and grimaced. “No offense!” His first date nerves had returned and his ability to shove his foot firmly in his mouth had come with them. How lovely.

Thankfully Suguru chuckled, “None taken. But I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. After all, I have to impress you if I want a second date.”

Ooh.

That sent tingles from Satoru’s chest down to his curling toes. He practically swooned right then and there. Maybe Suguru did like him. Blush crawled over his cheeks. Satoru looked down at his lap shyly, biting his lip and laughing softly. He just hoped the rest of the date went even better so that the possibility of a second date turned into a definite.

The rest of the ride was in comfortable silence as Suguru turned down different streets until they arrived at their destination. Satoru entertained himself by following the wind currents with his hand and thinking of possible second-date ideas. Every now and then, he would feel Suguru’s eyes on him and when he returned the favor, they shared sheepish grins.

When they pulled to a stop, Satoru noticed that there was a bright flashing sign with an arrow pointing towards a field that said “Drive-In”. Satoru turned to Suguru in amused surprise. This wasn’t the modern-day dinner and a movie date – no, it was a classic dinner and a movie-type date. Wow, Satoru thought as the car pulled into the field just as the last rays of the sun disappeared from the horizon.

“A drive-in?” Satoru asked when Suguru had turned the car off.

He watched as Suguru gave him a heart-stopping wink before opening the door and grabbing the speaker from the post. They hadn’t parked as close as they needed to apparently. Suguru then attached it to the door and got back inside.

“Can’t take you to any old theater, now can I?” Suguru teased. He turned around and reached into the back seat and pulled up a bag. “The drinks and snacks as I had promised.”

Satoru gaped at Suguru a little before hesitantly taking a bottle of kombucha tea. He smiled down at the label and then back at Suguru. How was he being this nice? Why was he being so nice?

“Didn’t you call me a hipster for drinking this the other day?”

Suguru laughed. “Yeah but I figured since you liked it I should give it a try and well here we are.” He also pulled out a vegan croissant and handed it to Satoru as well. “This one is for you.”

Satoru felt his heart do a little flip as he reached for the pastry. It had been next to impossible to find much variety for sweet vegan foods since Satoru had made the dietary change. So how had Suguru found one?

Clearly, Suguru must’ve done his research if he was bringing him these kinds of snacks. Not many people knew he was vegan and those that did always made a point to poke a little fun at him, but Suguru? Suguru simply accepted it and adapted in such a way that Satoru was having a really hard time not melting into a puddle.

“You– how did you know?” Satoru asked as he glanced up from the pastry which he had yet to taste. He was still in awe right now.

Suguru winked at him, “Can’t give away all my secrets.”

Satoru wanted to respond to that, but he just kept smiling at the pastry and tea. It was only their first date and Suguru had damn near taken Satoru’s heart completely. Not that it was too hard since Satoru had been crushing on him, but come on. Who was actually this perfect?

Soon, the speaker crackled, and the giant, projector screen started flickering as the movie began. A hush fell over the whole field as the countdown began. Satoru glanced around noting that the field wasn’t totally full and they had a few spaces between their car and the next patron, but this was a pretty good turnout he guessed. Drive-Ins weren’t as popular as they used to be but this one seemed to be doing well.

Satoru absentmindedly started munching on the pastry while the first started and hoped that he wouldn’t get too scared during the film. Psycho wasn’t exactly the scariest film, but Satoru already didn’t like horror films, so he wasn’t exactly eager to watch it.

They were about twenty minutes into the film when Satoru noticed Suguru’s hand just barely touching his on the seat between their legs. He hadn’t really put much thought into the fact that the car had bench seats, but now that he thought about it, it was kind of the perfect car to watch a movie at a Drive-In in.

Satoru slyly shifted his hand so that it brushed Suguru’s while he kept his gaze glued to the screen. He wasn’t really paying too much attention to the film because his nerves had kicked in the moment he finished eating. He also didn't have anything to keep him occupied from the distracting thoughts of Suguru sitting so close to him under the nighttime sky.

The warmth of Suguru’s skin seemed to grow hotter with each second and Satoru decided to chance scooting closer to him. But as his luck would have it, he shivered as a breeze swirled around them and drew Suguru’s attention. It wasn’t for naught though because Suguru lifted his arm over the back of the seat and gestured with his head for Satoru to move in close. So much for trying to be sneaky, Satoru thought as he blushed deeply and sat closer to Suguru. So far, the date was going well.

Gentle fingers played with the shoulder of his shirt and Satoru could really only hear the beating of his heart in his ears. He was close enough to smell Suguru’s cologne and man was it intoxicating. He smelled vaguely of autumn rain and spices. It was making it even harder for Satoru to focus on the screen.

Satoru nervously darted his tongue out to wet his lips and stifled a sigh. There was no way he could pay attention, not with Suguru this close. He could practically feel him breathing next to him and it was clouding Satoru’s mind with thoughts of kissing him. Would kissing on the first date be so bad though? Would Suguru think that Satoru just wanted to hook up instead? He definitely didn’t want that, but Suguru had really nice lips and Satoru really wanted to try them out.

He had been so caught up that he almost missed Suguru turning to look at him with smoldering eyes. Satoru could just see him in his peripheral vision. He thought Suguru had wanted to see the movie, but here he was staring at Satoru like he was the next coming of Christ.

Maybe Suguru was having the same thoughts of kissing Satoru? Suguru’s gaze flicked to Satoru’s mouth and then back up. Well, that confirmed he was having the same thoughts which was both a good and a bad thing. Satoru felt his breath go shallow as he turned to face Suguru. His heart was racing in his chest, roaring in his ears, and making his body throb. Should he just bite the bullet and go for the kiss?

They remained frozen like that, staring at each other, breathing growing ragged as the tension grew. Satoru nodded just a tiny bit and Suguru leaned in to kiss him. Soft lips crashed onto his, hungry and pleading, stealing the air from Satoru’s lungs. A surprised but pleased sound hit the back of his throat when he felt Suguru’s hands move to cup the sides of his face. They were warm and steady, holding him in place while they kissed.

Satoru was sure he was going to black out at this point. His heart felt like it was going to explode from his chest. He shifted so his torso was turned towards Suguru and sighed into another meeting of their mouths. He thought he had kissed great kissers before, but Suguru was blowing them out of the water with the way he sucked lightly on Satoru’s bottom lip and trailed his hands from his face to his back and pulling Satoru deeper and deeper.

The leather stuck to Satoru’s arm as he moved until he was straddling Suguru, lips swollen from the force of their kisses and feeling breathless. He pulled back to catch his breath, chest heaving. Suguru looked so amazing from the angle. The wind whipped their hair around their faces, eyes full of desire, and the flush of red spread over his neck and disappeared into his shirt.

Suguru reached up and gently pulled Satoru back down to kiss him, whispering against his lips, “You have no idea how badly I wanted to do this.”

Satoru bit his lip and pressed his forehead against Suguru’s. “Me too.”

He kissed Suguru again, this time taking the lead and sliding his hands over his shirt, exploring his chest. Suguru was very fit. He shuddered when Suguru’s tongue prodded for entrance and let him in. The first swipe was tentative, just a quick brushing of the tips of their tongues. Then the next one was a bit more confident. Suguru flicked his tongue and explored his mouth.

Satoru felt the rumble of a moan in Suguru’s chest and responded in the same vein. The movie was long forgotten by this point as they were glued to each other’s faces, playfully nipping and tasting each other.

The chill of the wind didn’t even bother Satoru because he was heating up from Suguru’s every touch. Every time he grazed his scalp with his nails, the way he gripped Satoru’s nape and smirked against his lips. All of it drove Satoru absolutely wild.

At some point they had fallen over on the bench seat, chest flush against chest, never parting their mouths for any longer than it took to catch a few breaths of air. Satoru was feeling intoxicated and tingling everywhere. He was curling his toes and rolling ever-so-slightly against Suguru’s body beneath him.

Satoru figured that if Suguru had the top up on his car that the windows would have steamed from the heated passion of their kisses. It was a funny little thought that had him giggling so much he pulled back.

He felt giddy, like he was on cloud nine, and looking at how flushed Suguru was only made him smile more. He did that. He was the one who made Suguru’s lips look plump and swollen. He was the one that tangled his black hair until it stuck up in odd directions. But most importantly, he was the one that Suguru was looking at with desire tinged with amusement.

“What?” Suguru asked, propping up on one elbow.

Satoru was about to answer when the sound of engines turning over interrupted him. He glanced around at all the headlights flickering on and frowned a little. “Ahh, I was enjoying myself.”

Suguru shifted, making the leather seat creak, and cupped Satoru’s face. “Don’t pout, we can do this again if you’d like?”

“The kissing or the movie?” Satoru mused.

He felt really comfortable with Suguru now. Kissing him had gotten rid of the nerves for the most part. Suguru turned out to be a really chill guy and an amazing kisser, which was something Satoru wanted to explore some more.

“The date. But I would never turn down making out with you,” He replied and adjusted his pants before fishing for his keys. “I know a laser tag place we could go to next weekend if you’d like?”

Satoru buckled himself in and smiled as he bit his lip. He would definitely like to do that. He’d like to do anything with Suguru as long as it meant spending time with him. “I’m free on Saturday?”

The engine turned over and Suguru grabbed Satoru’s hands and laced his fingers through his on the seat. “It’s a date, then.”

Satoru smiled at himself and gave Suguru’s hand a squeeze. The drive back home was filled with the two of them getting to know each other a bit more. Satoru learned that Suguru had actually fixed up his car with the help of his father. He had been given the car on his sixteenth birthday and told that if he could make it run, then it was his. It was kind of amazing. The only thing Satoru really knew about fixing cars was how to change a flat tire.

They talked about their high school experiences, detailing the groups they hung out with, the people they dated, and why they ended up at their university. Satoru found out that they had somewhat similar upbringings, both being only children. It was refreshing to know just how human Suguru was. It brought him down from the perfection of a god to something more manageable for Satoru and he liked that.

However, it wasn’t until they pulled up to the house that Suguru asked Satoru the question he’d been dreading. “How’d you like the movie?”

Satoru nearly bolted out of the car right then and there, but he decided he should come clean so he took a deep breath and spilled. “Well...I actually hate Hitchcock.”

Suguru shook his head, but he was grinning. “Why didn’t you say so? I could’ve taken you to a different Drive-In.”

Satoru looked away, sheepish. “I wanted you to like me,” he muttered.

Suguru laughed. “You’re cute. If I didn’t like you I wouldn’t have asked you out.” He leaned over and kissed Satoru’s cheek. “You do like laser tag, right?”

Satoru felt his heart melt into a complete puddle and scoffed. “Of course I do. I just hope you’re ready to lose.”

“Oh really?” Suguru said. “What makes you so sure about that?”

“You’ll just have to wait and see,” Satoru replied immediately. It was nice feeling so relaxed around him now. He crossed his arms, a smug smile on his face while he waited for Suguru to refute.

Instead of saying anything, however, Suguru simply kissed Satoru, lightly caressing the side of his jaw and slipping his tongue inside for a quick taste before pulling away.

“Whatever you say, Satoru.” He said and bit his lip like he was holding himself back. After staring at each other for a moment, Suguru nodded at Satoru’s front door. “You should go before we end up making out again. It’s already hard enough for me just to kiss you goodnight.”

Satoru’s stomach filled with butterflies and he touched his lips absently. After a moment, he blinked out of the momentary daydream of them making out on his couch and let out a chuckle. “See you later?”

Suguru gave him a two-finger salute, “Of course.”

Satoru had to force himself to get out of the car and not look back as he entered the door. He could hear Suguru fire up the engine and back out. Once the car was down the road, Satoru let out an excited little yelp and kicked off his shoes, a smile on his face. Date number one had been a success and he already had a second one coming.

It couldn’t have gone better.
