Work Header

Fading Into Sadness

Summary:

AU. What if Will had survived being shot? Would he and Alicia finally have good timing and put aside their recent differences to make things work?

Notes:

Don’t own anything. If I did, Will definitely never would’ve been killed off and he and Alicia would’ve gotten the happily ever after they deserved.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter Text

The news had been unexpected.

Alicia, Will’s been shot,” came Kalinda’s frantic voice in her ear as she tries to process what she just heard. Beside her, Eli had become confused and concerned at her tearful expression.

“Who is it?” He asks, hand coming to rest on her arm that she shrugs off.

“Kalinda,” she manages to explain, “Will has been shot, I need to get to the hospital.”

“What, wait, hang on,” he mutters while yanking her to a halt, “I’ll drive you, just calm down and take a minute to compose yourself.”

She does take a moment, not to compose herself, but rather to scoff at how ridiculous it was that he’s more concerned about her causing a scene at this event than the fact that Will had been shot. “Don’t bother. I’ll take a cab.”

“Alicia,” he calls after her but it’s futile as she’d already rushed out of the room.

The ride to the hospital had been a blur but once Alicia is out of the cab and all but frantically tossing money at the driver, all thoughts cease to matter except for one - ‘please let him be okay.’

She finds Diane alongside Kalinda in the hall once she enters the hospital, both women appearing to be upset and anxious. “How is he?” She manages to ask, fearing the worst as Diane chokes back a sob and reaches for her hand.

“I don’t know. The doctors aren’t telling us anything because we aren’t his family.”

“Did you contact his sisters?”

“I did,” Kalinda interjects to say and despite their rocky relationship, Alicia directs a sad smile at her friend. “They’ll be here soon.”

“How did this all happen?”

“Will had been in court and somehow his client had managed to get ahold of a gun and began to shoot at everyone inside. Will tried to protect everyone while also keeping the guy calm but it didn’t work. He turned the gun on Will and fired at him.”

Her breath hitches at the thought. “Were you there?”

“I’d been alerted to the shooting and after they stopped him from hurting anyone else, I entered the courtroom and found Will lying on the ground,” she takes a deep breath before continuing by saying, “There was a lot of blood, he could hardly breathe.”

“I want to see him, I need to see him.”

“I’ll go get the doctor again,” Kalinda announces and takes off in the direction of the nurses station.

Diane sniffles then takes a seat against the wall, “I can’t believe this is happening.”

“Neither can I. His own client? Someone he tried to help?”

“It could’ve been much worse I suppose,” she adds and Alicia ponders on that for a few minutes. What if he had died? What if others had been injured? What if he died and she never got a chance to tell him how she really felt?

“I just hope his sisters get here soon.”

After hours of waiting, after a brief call from his sisters saying that they’ll be there later than expected, they give permission for the doctor to let Diane, Alicia and Kalinda know what’s going on with Will.

He had a lengthy road to recovery ahead but they were able to extract the bullet from his body and he had a good surgery. “Thank god,” Diane breathes out.

“Can we see him?”

The doctor shakes his head, “He needs his rest but come back tomorrow, okay?”

They all nod and after a hug from Diane, Alicia makes her way back outside only to remember that she didn’t bring her car. “Shit,” she mutters and pulls out her phone. She had three missed calls from Peter, two from Grace.

And one from Will. She hadn’t noticed it earlier during all the chaos.

Tears begin to form as she takes a deep breath and tries to hail a cab. “Alicia?” She glances over, finding Kalinda there. “Do you need a ride?”

“Oh, erm, I’m trying to get a cab.”

“You’ll be here all night. Come on, I’ll take you home. Or to a bar,” she adds, and after the day she had, Alicia felt tempted to take her up on the offer. But she knew she needed to get home and get some sleep.

“If you don’t mind I’d prefer to go home.”

“No problem. Let’s go.”

The next morning, Alicia returned to the hospital to find that Will was awake and talking to Diane. Once they notice her in the doorway, Diane smiles and comes up with an excuse to give them their privacy before making a hasty exit.

Alone, Alicia shyly walks over to his bed and sits in the chair Diane occupied a few seconds ago, not sure how to even begin this conversation. She settles on saying, “Hi.”

“Hey,” he replies, his voice groggy but weak.

“How are you feeling?” Off the look he gives her, she adds, “Right, stupid question.”

“You look tired.”

“Me? Oh, I guess I didn’t get much sleep.”

“I’m sorry.”

She almost wanted to laugh at that. He’d just been shot and nearly killed but he was more concerned over her not getting a good nights rest instead.

“You have nothing to be sorry about. I’m the one who’s sorry,” her voice cracks then, tears falling as she apologizes for everything she’s done to him lately. “I am so sorry, Will. For everything. For fighting with you, for leaving the firm, for stealing clients - everything. I’m sorry.” Alicia breaks down crying once she finishes apologizing to him, her hands shaking as she tries to calm herself down.

“Shh, hey it’s okay,” Will murmurs softly, hand attempting to hold her own. “I’m okay. I’m not going anywhere.”

“I hurt you.”

“I’d say we both did a good job hurting each other. But maybe we can put that all aside and try to be friends again?”

“I’d like that.”
