Work Text:

A couple of friends, perhaps brother and sister, were oohing and aahing at the windows of the shopping district.  They walked arm in arm, fulfilling a picture of just some fifteen year olds out on a day trip.

“Onii-san, I feel so cool like this!”

“Untouchable, even?”

“Oh, shut up.  I’m on a mission here.”

“That you are ~”

“I swear to god, I’ll –”

What the sister said next was cut off by a gasp, perhaps of awe.  If asked, a casual passerby would have surmised that the sister had dragged her brother into the nearest shop.

What really happened was much more sinister.

A group of men who loomed far over the two had cornered them into a side alley, where a delivery truck was conveniently parked.  From this perspective a kidnapping was going on.  And it only got worse from there.

“Please just let me stay with my sister, please,” followed by an “Oof –” as he was kicked down.

The two were subdued, with gags covering their mouths and zip ties and duct tape encircling their wrists and ankles respectively.  The boy’s request was granted in a form, mocking as it may have been, where the two were heaved into the back of the van, one after the other.

They arrived at the site, an empty warehouse, complete with dirty brick and shattered glass windows.  The boy and the girl were dragged inside, where the appointed interrogators lay in wait, like a praying mantis anticipating a meal.

And oh, they were hungry.

New bruise after broken finger after sprained ankle.

The two looked small, huddled near the wall next to each other.

“Cute, that through it all, you’re still holding hands.  He means that much to you, little girl?”

Grinding her teeth, she gritted out, “Just spit it out already, won’t you?  What do you want?”

“Well, we may be mistaken, but you two sure do resemble our target and his new shadow lurking in the corners.”

Another chimed in, “Boss’s boss would happily pay to have them back, even if you’re not really them.”

Here the boy spoke up, “I can’t believe you’d give up your information just like that.  What if we escape?”

“Don’t taunt me, boy, or I’ll put this bullet in your sister’s brain.”

The girl shifted away in fear.

The man continued, “And the real fun hasn’t begun yet.  Because rumor has it, that those two we mentioned?  Neither have an ability.  And all of us here do.  No matter how you spin it, we’re the ones who win.”

The boy lunged forward, seemingly in anger, leaving his sister out of his reach.  Simultaneously, a shot rang out, followed by a feminine scream.  When the dust had settled, the boy had broken his restraints, and hurried over to his sister.

“Cruel of you, boy, to let her die like that due to a foolish action of your own.”

Ignoring the leader, the boy bent over her limp form, knocking into the shooter as he got up.

He replied, “I think you’ll find that you are the ones with no win condition.”

Out of nowhere, he cocked a gun in each hand, letting loose into the majority of the men assembled there.  Suddenly, the girl leapt forward, somehow back to perfect health, and broke the hand of her shooter.

Between the two of them, the room became painted in blood and low groans for mercy.  Finally, the boy reached the shocked form of the leader, whispering kindly, “It appears you made a mistake.”

After several agonizing minutes, much to the leader’s confusion and pain, the boy and the girl had extracted the information they needed.  The girl started to leave, and the boy shouted after her, “I’ll handle the rest, all right?  You just go get the information.”

Before one final parting shot, the boy calmly observed, “It seems you misjudged the Demon and Ghost of Yokohama.”
