I - Kōrai Hoshiumi
In the years since Hoshiumi met Kageyama, he's only seen him smile four times. All times were related to volleyball, except one.
Hoshiumi was drenched in sweat after an especially grueling practice match on the JNT. They'd switched to spiking drills, everyone's feet dragging along in exhaustion, except for a familiar flash of orange dashing across the court. Despite working with Kageyama for many years on the Adlers, Hoshiumi's quick attacks with him were incomparable to his with Hinata's. Just like everyone else, he stopped and admired the duo's perfect coordination as Hinata's hand connected to the toss with a satisfying THUMP. It felt as if he was being pulled into their orbit, their passion magnetic to anyone watching.
Hinata bounces around Kageyama excitedly, as if it was the first time he'd ever touched a volleyball.
"Nice kill." Kageyama mutters begrudgingly, like it physically pained him to give the smaller boy a compliment. Hoshiumi could've sworn he saw Hinata throw a wink over his shoulder towards him as he walked to the benches to get his water.
The two slump up against the wall, whispering inaudibly, like they share a secret no one else knows. Kageyama cranes his head down so Hinata can whisper something in his ear, and Hoshiumi watches in awe as the black-haired boy bites back a smile. Hinata is known for surpassing peoples expectations, doing the impossible, but Hoshiumi never realized the extent of that statement as he watches Kageyama tilt his head back and honest to god laughs. A full-on, chest heaving laugh that makes you lose your breath. Your stomach hurst, your side cramps, an eye-watering smile he never thought he'd see from the guy who who made a young fan cry after a bad loss with only his face.
Two thing went through Hoshiumi's mind in those few seconds:
1. What the fuck did Hinata say to make the stone-cold Kageyama laugh?
2. After being separated for years, how were these two still as close as they were in highschool?
Then, like an ice cold shower, those piercing blue eyes that Hoshiumi is used to seeing on court meet his, and Kageyama's face drops into his usual mask of indifference. Hinata frowns slightly at his sudden change, slapping him on the arm and teasing him with words Hoshiumi couldn't hear.
Grabbing his water bottle from the bench, he walked away with a nagging feeling that he's missing something important.
II - Atsumu Miya
"How's my favorite brother doing?" Atsumu announces as he saunters through the doors of Onigiri Miya, Hinata close behind.
Osamu rolls his eyes. "I'm yer only brother, dumbass."
"That doesn't mean yer not my favorite, 'Samu!" Atsumu sing-songs over his shoulder as he walks to the corner table that was conveniently always available for him.
Hinata excitedly waves from behind Atsumu, making Osamu smile from behind the counter. As the two settle into their designated seats, their eyes barely glance the menus as they place their usual orders. They chat about nothing and everything, an occasional bark of laughter startling nearby customers. Suddenly, Hinata stops mid-sentence about his new attack he's practicing. He looks down at the cause of their interruption, a half-grin already forming on his face. He grabs his buzzing phone and nods towards the bathrooms.
"I have to take this, I'll be right back!" He grins at Atsumu before zipping to the hall leading to the restrooms.
Without even thinking about it, Atsumu slyly gets up from the table and walks inconspicuously in Hinata's footsteps. Before he knows it, he's at Osamu's counter. He slides his arm onto the surface with a devious smirk on his face. Osamu watches in annoyance as his brother leans his head towards the phone call.
"Stop being such a nosy bitch." He scoffs.
"Your nose... is a bitch."
Osamu stares at him as if saying, Really? That's the best you could do?
"We have the same nose, imbecile. Now stop trying to listen in on Hinata's conversation."
"I'm not trying, I'm succeeding," he corrects, craning his head further around the corner. He waves his hand towards his brother to shut him up, Osamu rolling his eyes at his brother's antics.
"Don't ask me to help save you when he catches you," he mumbles before turning his attention to another customer.
Atsumu spots the tangerine animatedly gesturing around as if the person on the end of the line could see him. He cracks a smile at his teammate's excitement, a twinge of jealousy of whoever's captured his attention. He can make out a few words here and there, but he's mostly silent listening to the speaker, a rare occurrence for Atsumu to see from the talkative ball of energy.
"Okay idiot. Love you. I'll see you at home babe." Hinata says before hanging up.
Love you? What the hell?!
He barely has time to register the fact that Hinata has someone he loves at home when he's roommates with Kageyama. He must hate having another person in his space. Is Hinata dating someone? His thoughts are interrupted as Hinata rounds the corner.
"What are you doing?" He asks with a confused expression on his face.
"Um. Talking to Osamu."
He points behind the counter. There's no one there.
"Uh, okay..." Hinata mutters before walking back to the table where their food is waiting.
Osamu's head peeks out from under the counter. "Nice going dumbass. I told you so."
"Whatever. Shut up," Atsumu retorts, "bitch," he adds as he walks away.
Atsumu has to get to the bottom of Hinata's secret lover. For the team. Of course. Not for his own curiosity. He's barely listening as Hinata explains yet another attack. Jesus. Does this kid ever shut up? He realizes he's seen him quiet. Talking his mystery girlfriend. He's never wished for this girlfriend he's discovered to be at this table more.
"Hey," he interrupts for his own sanity, "the team's going out to a bar Saturday night.... got anyone you wanna bring?"
He grins at himself for his excellent line of questioning. He should be hired for the FBI for how well he's doing.
"Nah not really," Hinata says casually.
Nevermind. His talents are far too wasted on dumbasses like Hinata.
As the dinner wraps up, Atsumu waves Hinata goodbye. He waves bye to Osamu, walking out the door back home to whoever's awaiting him.
"Damn," Osamu says, leaning over the counter, "he looked really happy talking to that person."
"What, you were listening too, hypocrite?" Atsumu retaliates.
"He looked like he just ate a really good pork onigiri," he sighs wistfully.
"What the fuck are you talking about dude?"
III - Kōtarō Bokuto
The bar was stuffy, hot, and reeked of vomit and booze. The whole team, plus Kenma and Kuroo, all crowded into the back of the bar excitedly. Glasses clinked, cans cracked open, and Bokuto loved it.
The counter stuck to the bare skin on his arm as he leaned over to talk to Kageyama at the front of the bar. "I'd never have sex with anyone but Akaashi, but if I did..." Kageyama chokes on his drink. "It definitely would be Ushijima. Look at his muscles, dude!"
"I literally haven't said a word since we got here," Kageyama deadpans.
"Okay, your turn. Fuck, marry, kill... Ushijima, Atsumu, and Shouyou." Kageyama's lips turn up in a not-quite smile at Shouyou's name.
"Kill Atsumu," he says immediately. Bokuto slaps the counter as he cackles. "I guess I'd fuck Ushijima. Marry Shou." He finishes.
"Okay, okay. Solid choice," Bokuto agrees, not realizing the nickname Kageyama had given Hinata.
"But of course I am already married," Kageyama rushes to add.
Bokuto stares at him blankly in horror. "What."
Kageyama blinks back, confused. "I'm married... I have been for three years. You seriously never noticed?"
Bokuto pales. "Three years?? Who??"
Kageyama's eyes widen, his eyebrows furrowing as he looks down at Bokuto. A familiar pout takes over his face, "How do you not know? We're pretty obvious. We've been together since highschool."
Before the other could give a response, a loud shout cuts through the clamor of the bar, Sakusa running out the door with a hand over his mouth. Atsumu is on top of the table, hunched over, with puke covering a horrified Kuroo. Kenma softly smiles behind the back of his hand watching the situation unfold. Kageyama rolls his eyes.
"Dammit, who was in charge of Atsumu this time?" Kageyama scolds, walking towards the scene. Bokuto stares shell-shocked at the back of his head as he walks away.
Bokuto later forgets the conversation after several more drinks, and when he wakes up in the morning he's only left with a fuzzy recollection of his conversation with Kageyama, feeling as if he's forgetting something big.
IV - Kiyoomi Sakusa
Sakusa can't decide if he's lucky or not to be paired with the chaotic duo for a 3v3 match. They were excellent players, sure, but he was third-wheeling for sure on the court beside them. He stretched, observing the two as Hinata shouts about potential strategies in Kageyama's ear, the younger nodding along with every word. He watches Kageyama's hand reaches up to something beneath his shirt, fiddling with it slightly before focusing his attention back at the tangerine.
The whistle blows. Game time.
In the midst of the chaos, Sakusa couldn't help but admire how in-sync they were together. Each spike of the ball and every set felt like they were pushing their limits, getting better as the match progress as others got wearier. Somehow, each amazing play one made, the other matched it perfectly. Kageyama seemed to be in top shape, his tosses with pinpoint accuracy. Hinata seemed to notice this too.
"Nice going Tobi!" He grinned, shining brighter than the sun at the taller. Sakusa felt like he had to shield his eyes.
Wait. Tobi?
He looked around wondering if anyone else noticed that. Now, Sakusa wasn't a nosy person. He wasn't. Genuinely. But Atsumu had rubbed off on him. And he couldn't help but wonder the true nature of their relationship. He wouldn't call it snooping, it was more... curiosity. For the sake of the team.
The rest of the match Sakusa had played his best, but his attention was more focused on the mystery that was Hinata Shouyou and Kageyama Tobio. He watched as after each play they were drawn to each other like magnets, always finding some way to touch the other after a good play. Hinata clapped his back excitedly or grabbed his hands urgently, Kageyama giving him awkward high-fives.
Sakusa was an observant person, he could see how Hinata's eyes lingered at the back of Kageyama's head. He knew the feeling all to well, his eyes drawn to the bleach blonde player across the net. He could see how Kageyama's hand instinctively reached for Hinata's whenever they had a second to spare. He could see how the two looked at each other, like they were the only two people in the room.
In that moment, Sakusa knew. He wasn't stupid, unlike his teammates, and he found himself suppressing a smile as the two walked out of practice together, their pinkies reaching for each other as they rounded the corner.
"Whatcha doin' Omi-Omi?" He hears from behind him, Sakusa instinctively rolls his eyes as he turns around.
He spares a thought for Kageyama and Hinata and their relationship, feeling a sudden burst of confidence.
"Have dinner with me tonight." He blurts suddenly, a wide grin spreading across Atsumu's face.
V - Wakatoshi Ushijima
Ushijima leans his shoulder against the locker, observing the chaos that was the Japanese National Team locker room. Bokuto was running around, whipping people with towels. Atsumu was screaming, and Aran was trying to confiscate the towel. Hoshiumi was cackling in a corner, Sakusa looking at this unfold with a look of disgust on his face. Everyone was particularly excited after their win in the previous match.
He watched as the people he'd begun to think of as his family ran around like children, despite being well into their twenties. He watched as Kageyama put his foot onto the bench, leaning down to tie his shoes. A small chain slipped out from under his shirt, a gold ring looped onto it.
"Congratulations," Ushijima says sternly.
"Sorry?" Kageyama looks up, confused.
"The ring. Congratulations," he repeats.
"Oh. Thanks," Kageyama suppresses a smile and nods.
The room goes silent for a few moments before erupting into wild shouts and questions towards a shocked Kageyama. Hinata snickers in the corner.
"Dude?? You're married?" Bokuto exclaims.
"Yes? You knew this?"
"Oh..... yeah..."
"Bro you KNEW?" Atsumu yells at Bokuto.
"You were too busy throwing up!" Bokuto retaliates, a fight breaking out between the two.
Hoshiumi interrupts the chaos, "why didn't you tell us?"
"I didn't not tell you, like, I wasn't hiding it," Kageyama responds, "we weren't very subtle..." he mumbles.
Hinata laughs loudly before grabbing Kageyama's wrist and dragging him out to the reporters waiting outside the locker room. The rest of the team follows in bewilderment.
+I.
"Hi, hello!!" Hinata announces before pulling out a familiar chain and ring. "Kageyama and I are married!" He shouts excitedly to a group of shocked reporters who immediately fall silent.
The team laughs softly off to the side, Atsumu slapping his forehead, "they were pretty obvious..."
Hoshiumi screams in delight and starts jumping on Hinata. Kageyama smiles.
Bokuto stares blankly for a few seconds. "OHHH!!! I get it!!" He says after a few moments.
Sakusa and Ushijima share a knowing look before reporters crowd around the couple, eagerly asking rapid fire questions.
The team (minus the happy couple) retreated back into the locker room while the duo was stuck with hungry reporters.
"This really does make sense you know..." Hoshiumi says, "did you guys see the way Kageyama smiles at Hinata?"
Everyone nods in agreement, Atsumu adding, "I heard Hinata talking to him on the phone all lovey-dovey." Sakusa slaps his arm lightly, Atsumu smiles at him.
"Kageyama told me he was married," Bokuto laughs to a quiet audience.
"Why didn't you tell us?" They all said in unison.
"I thought it was pretty obvious..." Sakusa mutters, Ushijima agreeing quietly behind him.
"How didn't we see this sooner? They've been together since highschool for God's sake!" Bokuto groans.
"Wait, what?"
