Chapter Text
Steve was tired. The team had repeatedly attacked the new Hydra unit with no avail. This unit was different, it was smarter and had infiltrated many high-level companies. Their mission was clear: find out who was behind it and shut them down before they could gain any more power.
Tony pushed himself off the wall where he’d been casually lounging and clapped his hands together, instantly drawing the room’s attention.
“Alright, folks, here’s the deal. Fury informed me that Hydra’s key players will be attending a big gala this weekend. This gala isn’t just any fancy party. It’s the event of the season. We’re talking New York’s elite, champagne that costs more than a small island, and enough caviar to feed an army.”
Steve leaned forward. “How do we get in?”
“Let me guess,” Nat said dryly. “You’ve already got an invite?”
“Please,” Tony replied, a grin spreading across his face. “I don’t need an invite. Who in their right mind will decline the Tony Stark?”
Clint raised an eyebrow. “So, what’s the plan? We crash the gala?”
“Not crash, Clint - blend,” Tony corrected. “We’ll go in undercover. The security will be tight, but they won’t be expecting us. We’ll mingle, gather intel, and find out who’s pulling the strings in this Hydra unit.”
Steve asked, “Who’s going in?”
“That’s the fun part,” Tony said, smirking as he looked between Steve and Bucky. “You two are going in disguised as a couple.”
There was a beat of silence. Steve shared a glance with Bucky, who looked as confused as him. He thought that everyone had already quietly picked up on their relationship, since they weren’t exactly trying to hide it.
“What the hell?” Bucky said, crossing his arms and playing along. “What makes you think we’re the best choice for that?”
Tony shrugged. “Look, this party is hosted by the highest of the high social class. They will expect couples, especially ones that look clean and popular. You two are perfect for the role.”
“Are you sure?” asked Steve.
Bucky smirked and said, “Come on, it will be fun, Stevie.”
Thinking about the parties he attended with Bucky before WWI, he groaned and said, “Fine.”
