Chapter One

Dom lay back further into the lounge as the sun radiated off his gleaming muscles. The moisture and tanning oil spread over his skin, drawing every beautiful woman's eyes in his direction.

Vince lay beside him in another lounge watching Mia and Brian in the water.

"I don't want to touch it! It's ugly as hell!"

"Oh come on, Bri. It's not going to hurt you!" Mia laughed as he kept backing up toward the beach.

He tried to keep his balance in the current. The waves rolling in kept making his feet sink into the sandy bottom.

"Get away from me with that thing, Mia..DOM! Call off your sister!"

Dom looked up and chuckled. "It only a baby lobster, Brian! It won't pinch that hard!"

"Depends on what it pinches." Vince laughed.

"I'm not jokin, Mia… get it the hell away from me." He waved his hands to try to divert her reaching out for him, as a wave came in unsettling his balance.

He backed up further and lost his it going under. He came up spitting and coughing still trying to keep his eyes on Mia in case she decided to lunge for him with the ..thing.

Every one laughed as he made his way to the sand out of the water.

"Think that's funny, huh? I need a drink." He headed up the beach still cussing under his breath with Dom and Vince laughing and Mia tagging along after him.

"Dom… you're sister's a bully..you know that right?"

"Guess you shouldn't have married her then huh?" Vince laughed out.

"Funny, V. Funny!" Brian stepped up to the sand bar and ordered a beer as Mia stepped up beside him.

"Ok..look.. I don't have it anymore ok.,..you big baby."

"I just don't like anything that can get a claw into me alright." He swallowed half the bottle as Mia giggled and ordered two more for the guys.

As they headed back toward them a gust of wind came up. No one was prepared for it.

"Damn, where'd that come from?" Vince shrugged. Dom looked up and saw the clouds rolling in from a distance. The temperature didn't change but the feel of the air felt different.

"Don't know but it's coming in fast." Dom said as he caught Vince eyeing a heavenly sight that walked by him in a bright peach bakini.

"Well, I'm done. Gonna head back up to the truck." Vince got up and followed the woman.

Catching up with her, Dom grinned and shook his head as she gave Vince her number and with a kiss on the cheek he came back to get the rest of his stuff.

"Think I'll do the same…Bri! Mia..lets head back! Weathers changin."

They grabbed their gear and headed up the bank to the truck. Once in, Dom grabbed a CD and slid it in.

They drove the next 40 miles back to their motel listening to Brian and Mia argue about where to go for dinner.

"I'm sick of chili alright!" He frowned as Mia rolled her eyes.

"I'm serious. We've had chili and beer, chili buritos, chili dogs, chili pie, chili burgers..chili fuckin everything!" He mumbled the last few as he looked out the side and watched the clouds filling up the sky.

Another gust of wind took Dom by surprise as the truck swerved from it. He compensated and cursed under his breath.

"Want me to drive, Brotha?"

"Thanks but I'd like to actually get back to the hotel with out a truck full of women this time, Brotha."

Vince grinned as he ejected the CD and turned the radio on.

"Can I help it if they want to follow me home?"

They all became quiet as a weather alert came across the radio station.

CHAPTER TWO

The weather alert reported possible severe weather headed their way. Dom sped all the way to the hotel. The gusts hit about every quarter mile and they were picking up strength. He noticed the sky was filling more with thicker clouds but they were higher up so he wondered was causing the gusts.

Brian broke him out of his trance as the hotel came up fast.

“Thought that part of you was over, Dom.” Brian’s sarcastic tone didn’t set well as they pulled into the parking lot.

Dom immediately turned to stare at Brian, wondering where the hell that just came from but Brian was looking out the window. His face as hard as Dom felt his was. Dom’s teeth ground into each other as he bit back the words that wanted to spill out.

“What the hell’s your problem, Brian?” Mia was tired of the attitude he was carrying. He’d been in a rotten mood since they arrived two days ago.

She watched Brian get out but he didn’t answer right away. Then he closed the door before she had a chance to get out. She was still a bit shocked when Dom opened the door for her and helped her out.

It was supposed to be their honeymoon. Something they had never had the chance to really get. Dom sprung the surprise o them two months ago on Mia‘s Birthday. Brian hadn‘t shown any real enthusiasm since that evening and Dom wondered if it was pride.

He‘d tried talking to him but Brian said it wasn‘t a problem. If that was true… Dom wondered what the hell was. He couldn’t figure him out lately. He was moody, some what depressed or just plain pissed since they’d arrived. Mia was suffering for it. That only cemented Dom’s concern.

“Nothing. Do you have to keep asking me that?” His attitude and sarcasm went beyond cruel in his tone and everyone froze from the slap. He headed sharply toward the entrance doors and walked inside without waiting for her. Leaving her outside with Dom and Vince.

She looked toward the ground and Dom couldn’t help but see the pain in her face. Normally he’d just go off on Brian, right now. That would be the old Dom and he fought like hell to keep that part of him in the past. Not just for Mia ..but for himself.

“Vince, you wanna take Mia to the restaurant and I’ll meet up with you two?” He watched Mia as Vince tried to help lighten her mood but it was all he could do to keep the growl from escaping his throat.

Instead, he held out his arm and gave her a smile which couldn’t have been easy. Dom knew Vince still had feelings for her and Brian was going to start a war he couldn’t win if he allowed Vince to get to him first.

Vince nodded. He smiled fighting the urge to just follow Brian up to the room and pound his ass. Instead he choked it down and let Dom handle it. He knew Mia didn’t like it when he and Brian had words. He couldn’t blame her. They hadn’t really been able to convince her that things had changed between them. He was starting to wonder if they actually had.

Mia offered a smile and took his arm. She glanced up at him and then at Dom with ‘that look.’ She couldn’t help it. She felt like the third wheel. Nothing felt right and no matter how hard she tried… she wanted more than anything else to talk to her big brother but she wouldn’t. She didn’t want him thinking she wasn’t capable of handling her own marriage.

The last thing she wanted was that smug look telling her ‘Don’t worry, sis. Big brother will take care of it.’ AGAIN.

No… Not this time. Things were different in so many ways. She loved Brian with all her heart. If she couldn’t get Brian to talk about it then she would wait until he wanted to and hope whatever was getting to him would pass. Settling back into Vince’s stride they went in towards the restaurant.

No one noticed the wind had picked up. The gusts and graying of the sky only enhancing the darker side of the moment.

Brian had barely touched her in two months. He hadn’t touch her at all since they’d been here. She couldn’t understand why and because he was acting so distant she had no idea what to do

This just wasn’t what she’d hoped it would be. She felt like going home. Even if it meant alone.

Dom headed to the elevator. Brian hadn’t even waited for him. Didn’t even look at him. He saw the doors close and his anger tried flaring again. He took a big deep breath and managed to count to ten before the elevator came back down and the doors opened.

Anyone else watching him would have wanted to stay the hell out of his way. That look was on his face whether he knew it or not. Like a steam engine roaring toward a wall. Brian being the wall.

He closed his eyes and decided he’d better try to figure out how to talk to him before he actually confronted him. Otherwise he might say ….or do something he’d regret.

The elevator doors opened and he stepped out walking down the hall to their suite. As he approached the door he heard Brian talking to some one. He listened while a deep frown grew as the words filtered through door.

Brian not acting like himself was an understatement. This side of him came pretty much out of nowhere and now with the conversation he was hearing he was beginning to understand why.

He only hoped it wasn’t what he was thinking. He couldn’t have gone back to the Department. He promised Mia. But what else could it be? There was no mistaking the professionalism in his voice. He was a cop right now.

Dom recognized the tone and demeanor of a cop. How could he ever forget. He just never expected to hear it in Brian again.

He hated this. If it were true. How would he tell Mia? Should he tell her?

“Listen, just tell me when and where damn it. I’ll take care of the rest.” His voice was angrier than when he left them downstairs.

Dom didn’t know how to take the conversation so he just waited and listened.

“No.. I don’t need it.”

*pause*

“I’m already carrying.”

Dom waited patiently for some clue other than what he already had going on in his mind.
He didn’t want to know but he had to.

“Yeah ..I got it. I said I got it.”

*pause*

“Twenty minutes. Make it fast. Get out. Fine. I’m on my way.”

“Shit!”

~~~ inside the room~~~~
Brian slammed the phone down on the it’s receiver. He walked to the closet and pulled out his bag. Rummaging through it he pulled out his piece. Staring at it. His hands were beginning to sweat. Not a good sign.
‘Stay cool, Connor. Fuckin get a grip.’
Sighing heavily he grabbed a fresh T-shirt, stripped off the sandy one that was scratching the hell out of his skin and pulled on the other. Then strapped on his holster and picked up the gun to slide in in.
The jacket Mia bought him before they left was too much so he grabbed the brown light weight leather one Vince had bought him for Christmas.
Looking in the mirror he suddenly realized how much he hated himself for this. If Mia ever found out it would be over. But there was no way out. It was supposed to be a simple transaction. No big deal. A favor repaid with out strings. Or so he thought.
Why the fuck did Dom have to pick Corpus Christi. Of all the fucking places in the world Dom picked the one place he should have never come back to. Now he was seriously contemplating how fucked he was.
As he checked himself in the mirror one more time he tried to put on a loose face. All he had to do was tell them he needed some air. Some time alone. Mia would understand. He wasn’t himself lately.
The last few months were eating away at him and he’d not only lost sleep and effected his appetite but it was taking it’s toll on their marriage. How the hell could he explain this to Mia.
Dom might understand but then Dom would have said no. He remembered the talk they’d had… it wasn’t an option. Now ….it still wasn’t an option. But he was already fucked. Had been the second he got the call. It was just supposed to be a favor. Just a fucking favor and now…. if Dom ever found out it would get messy. Not just for him and Mia but for everyone.
As he looked at himself in the mirror, lost in his thoughts he didn’t hear the front door of their suite open or the heavy footsteps coming toward the room. He didn’t notice a lot of things.
Dom quietly walked in the room and looked around. It was the largest and most elegant suite in the hotel wanting only the best for his sister. She deserved it. She deserved more than what she was getting right now.
He walked toward the bedroom and stood in the doorway watching Brian. He looked like he was settling something with himself.
Brian checked himself again and thought about how he‘d get past Mia again. Dom he could handle but the look in Mia‘s eyes lately were killing him. ‘Just going for a drive, Babe. Just a drive. To clear my head. I know…I’ve been in a bad mood lately. Just gonna go and try to clear my head is all. Yeah. That‘s it.’
“Yeah.. That’ll work ..for now.”
“What …..will work…for now?” Dom wasn’t going to move. He wanted answers.
Brian spun around reflexing for his piece to see Dom standing in the door of the bedroom. His arms crossed and leaning almost the next step in to completely block the doorway. His eyes piercing through him.
The same eyes he remembered the night Vince caught him coming out of Hector‘s garage. Those same penetrating eyes that scared the shit out him then…. scared the shit out of him now.
‘I’m fucked.’
The thought was mutual.
