Chapter 1
“Sir…Sir…there’s a lady here to see you!” Mike’s very excitable assistant exclaimed.
“A lady?” Mike asked. Mike tried to not be rude with the young man. He didn’t quite have the star-quality that Tom had and was shorter-tempered, but he got the feeling the young ensign needed a strong role model.
“Uh…Christie…Caroline…Catherine?” Ensign Dobbs said.
“Son…next time; write down the name on your notepad so you don’t forget it, okay?” Mike suggested.
“Yes, sir.” Ensign Dobbs said.
“What’d she look like? An approximate age?” Mike asked as they walked down the hallway.
“Salt and pepper hair. My mom would say she is a really ‘classically pretty woman.’” Ensign Dobbs answered.
“Alright. Let’s go see about this classically pretty woman.” Mike said. They walked into the area that worked as a ‘lobby’ of the office Mike worked out of. There was a woman standing with her back to them, with shoulder length gray hair. She stood about five-foot and was pretty small statured. “Ma’am? I’m Admiral Michael Slattery. How can I help you?” Mike asked, thinking she was a mother or wife of someone in the Navy or Marines.
“Hi…Mike. I refuse to call you Admiral Slattery, though.” The woman said as she turned around. Mike was suddenly face-to-face with his wife.
“Christine?” Mike asked.
“Sir…would you like me to empty the break-room?” Ensign Dobbs asked. He gestured at the other people in the room.
“Please.” Mike answered before grabbing Christine’s hand and pulling her with him as they followed Ensign Dobbs out of the lobby.
“Shouldn’t be too many people in there. Give me just a moment?” Ensign Dobbs said. Mike and Christine stood in the hallway. Thankfully, the break-room was empty and they were soon in there alone.
“So…Admiral, huh?” Christine asked as she paced around nervously.
“The girls?” Mike asked.
“They’re okay. We just got here. They are at the hotel.” Christine said. Mike poured himself a cup of coffee and indicated at some herbal teas.
“There’s hot water here and some tea and sugar.” Mike explained.
“Thanks.” Christine replied. Mike handed her his extra coffee cup and waited as she fixed herself a cup of hot tea.
“Where have you been?” Mike asked.
“Mike…we…found a place and holed up. We just came back up. As soon as I figured out where you were, we got here.” Christine replied.
“Couldn’t you have called or something?” Mike asked. He suspected Christine was lying. His marriage had all but been over, but he really did want to see his girls.
“Jesus, Mike. I tried. Do you want to see the girls or not?” Christine asked.
“Yes. Let me get a thing taken care of real quick. Have you eaten?” Mike asked.
“No. Food hasn’t been plentiful.” Christine answered. Mike pulled his leftover take-out out of the fridge and handed it to her.
“From last night. Just heat up and eat it. I’m not hungry.” Mike replied.
“Thanks.” Christine said.
“And we’ll get the girls something. Just go ahead and eat.” Mike said before leaving the room. It was not lost on him that he hadn’t even hugged Christine. He got to Ensign Dobbs’ desk and looked down at the young man.
“Sir?” Ensign Dobbs asked, grabbing a notebook.
“I will email the President and my counterparts with the Army, Marines and Coast Guard. If something pivotal comes through, call me; but I am going to take some time off to try and get my…wife and daughters settled.” Mike said.
“Your wife and daughters?” Ensign Dobbs asked.
“Yeah.” Mike answered. He walked into his own office and grabbed his laptop, cellphone, Ipad and briefcase. He’d take care of the emails once he was with his daughters. When he walked back into the break-room, Christine was washing up her fork and both of their cups.
“Take-out was good. Thank you.” Christine remarked as she dried her hands.
“Do you have a vehicle here?” Mike asked.
“No, I rode the bus.” Christine said, grabbing her purse.
“Okay, C’mon.” Mike replied. He led Christine out of the office, remembering to slow his stride. It was cold out and he immediately noticed that she began wheezing as soon as the wind hit. “Are you sick?” Mike asked.
“Getting over a chest cold.” Christine replied.
“I see.” Mike answered. They got to his truck and he pulled his personal coat out. “Here; this will help.” Mike said; handing her the coat.
“Thanks.” Christine said; not arguing about taking the coat. It made Mike wonder. Normally, Christine would be arguing about every single thing. He made sure his girlfriend, Emily’s sweater was covered up and went around to the other side once Christine was settled. His marriage had been in the toilet. He didn’t really care about Emily but he didn’t want to open the wound just yet.
“Alright, provided the hotel is safe; you all will stay there tonight. I need to get stuff set up for you all.” Mike said. He needed an opportunity to talk to Emily and clear her things out of his house.
“Okay.” Christine said. She’d already given him the address. Mike could tell something was on her mind. Finally, she spoke up. “So, are you seeing someone?” Christine asked.
“Are you?” Mike retorted.
“No.” Christine answered.
“I…am. Just a casual thing. Nothing serious.” Mike replied.
“I figured.” Christine said.
“I want to concentrate on the girls.” Mike commented.
“They’ll be happy to see you. Hannah especially, but Lizzie too.” Christine said with a small smile. Mike noticed her front tooth was chipped.
“Have they been sick too?” Mike asked.
“Hannah, somewhat.” Christine said.
“I’ll see if I can get you three into a doctor.” Mike replied as they got to the hotel. It was a low-budget place and probably dirty and not safe.
“Thanks.” Christine replied. They got out of the truck and Mike made sure Christine was next to him. The wheezing got worse as they walked and Mike knew they couldn’t stay in the hotel.
“Okay…I don’t think this is the right place for you all. I do have room for you all at my house. But…the woman I was seeing sometimes stays over. I will call her and talk to her but some of her stuff will be at my place until I can get it back to her. I just wanted to warn you. I’ll get it packed up.” Mike warned. Christine slowed her pace.
“Are you breaking it off with her?” Christine asked.
“Probably.” Mike answered honestly.
“I know you said it was just casual but if you care about her…” Christine started.
“Just casual. It means nothing.” Mike answered as he continued walking.
“It's just that I know things between us were pretty broken. Hell, you’ve not even hugged me.” Christine remarked.
“You were the one that wanted the divorce. Alright; I’ll call Emily if you want to go to the girls. Which room are you in?” Mike asked,
“Four-ten.” Christine replied.
“And…I didn’t want our marriage to end. I just didn’t want to be miserable so I was willing to give you a divorce.” Mike said simply.
“And now?” Christine asked.
“I honestly don’t know.” Mike admitted.
“We’re going to have a lot to figure out.” Christine remarked.
“No shit.” Mike said.
“Look, Mike…I love you and I am sorry for everything that was said. I’ve spent the past several years missing you and wishing we could be together. Make your call and I’ll go talk to the girls. They will be excited to see you.” Christine said.
“We’ll talk more.” Mike replied. He touched Christine’s shoulder and immediately noticed that she shrunk back slightly. He dropped his hand, wondering what the story was. She nodded at him and walked towards the elevator. Mike stepped back out of the hotel lobby to call Emily. Thankfully, she answered on the second ring.
“Hey, do you want me to stop by tonight?” Emily asked.
“Actually, no. My wife showed up.” Mike said, not even trying to beat around the bush. He didn’t care about Emily but he would be honest.
“And that’s a problem?” Emily asked with a laugh.
“Emily…we can’t see each other anymore. I’ll pack up your stuff and drop it off tomorrow to your office. I wish I was doing this in person but I owe it to Christine.” Mike said.
“Do I have an option?” Emily asked, very crisply.
“Honestly…no. This was going nowhere anyways. I was never going to completely move on and you know that. It would have stagnated and you deserve to be happy. Find someone who makes you happy.” Mike answered.
“Alright.” Emily answered. Mike knew she wasn’t happy but there was little he could do about it.
“For what it’s worth; I am sorry. I never intended on leading you on.” Mike said. Emily didn’t answer him, just hanging up.
He headed to Christine’s hotel room; nervous about seeing Hannah and Lizzie. It would hurt not seeing Lucas with them, but at least his baby girls were okay, even if ‘okay’ was relative. He knocked on the door and Christine let him in. Hannah got to him, followed by Lizzie. He was glad he had some privacy because the tears were streaking down his cheeks.
“I’ve missed you both so much.” Mike said.
“Mom said we were going to your house?” Lizzie asked.
“Yeah, honey. Little safer and warmer than here.” Mike replied.
“I’ve almost gotten everything packed up. There’s not much.” Christine admitted. Mike nodded at her, noting that the wheezing was getting worse.
“Before we go to my place; I may try to get you all seen at an urgent care.” Mike said.
“No need to spend that kind of money. I’m sure we’ll get over it.” Christine remarked quietly.
“You are already going into pneumonia so I doubt you’ll get over it.” Mike said. He noticed a look between Christine and the girls.
“Mom; you do need to see a doctor.” Lizzie remarked. As the oldest, she had always been a ‘mini-adult.’
“Hannah too.” Christine remarked after a coughing fit.
“Yes, both of you. I never took you off the benefits package so there’s not a cost.” Mike replied. He wouldn’t have cared if there was a cost.
“This is it.” Christine said; starting to pick up the bag.
“I got it. Is it for all three of you?” Mike asked.
“Yeah. We don’t have much.” Christine replied.
“Do you have a vehicle here?” Mike asked as they headed out of the room.
“No.” Christine replied.
“Alright. We’ll get you checked out.” Mike said. He would love to know what Christine’s story was, but he was almost afraid of finding out.
They got Christine and the girls checked and Mike drove them to a nearby urgent care. As Mike suspected, Christine had pneumonia and Hannah had a respiratory infection. Medicine was prescribed and while they waited for prescriptions, Mike ordered groceries and a few other things to be delivered to his house. Thankfully, the house was four-bedrooms and set up. It might not be to their tastes but it was nice enough. As Mike pulled up to the house; Christine gasped.
“Mike, this is beautiful.” Christine remarked. The house was nothing special. Just a two-story Craftsman style.
“It’s completely renovated inside but has alot of the original woodwork and such.” Mike replied as they got out of the truck.
“Sounds nice.” Christine said; flashing another small smile. Mike unlocked the door and poked his head inside before letting the girls and Christine in.
“Mom, it has a fireplace! For stockings. And we could put a Christmas tree there…” Lizzie said, pointing around the room. Mike’s doorbell rang and Mike retrieved his grocery order.
“I got some canned soup and such. Stuff for tonight too. I’ll show you all around.” Mike said.
“This is lovely.” Christine remarked as she followed him into the kitchen.
“I figured you’d like it.” Mike said as he unloaded the groceries into the pantry.
“I really appreciate you letting me stay with Lizzie and Hannah.” Christine remarked.
“You need to be with them.” Mike said.
“Mike…things happened. Does the name Allison Shaw ring any bells?” Christine asked.
“Is that where you all have been?” Mike asked.
“For a while, then we hid.” Christine replied.
“Christine; you are going to have to tell me everything. It doesn’t have to be tonight but very soon.” Mike said. Christine nodded.
“That’s why I found you. I didn’t feel comfortable talking to anyone else.” Christine said.
“You were sexually assaulted, weren’t you?” Mike asked quietly.
“Yes.” Christine answered.
“The girls?” Mike asked as he looked towards the living room.
“No. I was able to keep it from happening to them.” Christine replied.
“Alright. I took some time off. Tomorrow; once you’ve gotten some rest and are feeling a bit better; we’ll talk a bit more.” Mike said.
“Mike…I love you. Please know that.” Christine said before walking back towards the living room.
Mike was thoroughly confused by Christine’s statement. He fixed supper, packed up Emily’s things and deposited them in his closet so Christine didn’t have to look at them. He highly doubted they would be sharing a bedroom, if ever again. The girls selected their bedrooms and Christine opted for the one across from Mike’s. The girls went to bed early and Christine quickly followed. Mike sent off emails to the President and other vital people; letting them know what was going on and then went upstairs. It surprised him slightly that Christine and the girls had left their bedroom doors open. Almost like they knew they could trust him.

Chapter 2
Christine woke up, startled that light was streaming through the windows. The bed was unbelievably comfortable and Christine was warm. She thought about just staying in bed but she wondered where the girls were. She got up and put on the flannel shirt that Mike had let her borrow.
She heard the girls chattering downstairs as she walked down the stairs and smiled at the smell of bacon cooking. She found her family in the kitchen, where Mike was cooking breakfast and the girls were sitting at the island.
“Mike; do you need help?” Christine asked.
“Nope. Just about done.” Mike replied.
“Dad is making his blueberry pancakes for us, Mom.” Lizzie said; almost shaking in excitement.
“Christine; when I ordered groceries yesterday; I got you some tea and a tea kettle. Sugar is right there.” Mike said, pointing at the boxes of tea packets. It seemed he’d bought every flavor imaginable.
“Thank you.” Christine said, lightly touching his back and as she filled the tea pot with water. She sat it on the stove and Mike turned the burner on.
“You’re welcome. I have to run some errands today. Do you think you and the girls will be alright? You can watch TV or do whatever you’d like. It won’t take me long.” Mike asked.
“I’m sure that we will be just fine.” Christine said.
“It won’t be long.” Mike said. He began dishing up the
pancakes and bacon. “Alright; let’s eat in here.” Mike said, pointing at the breakfast nook. Mike and the girls settled, and Christine fixed her cup of tea before sitting down next to Mike.
“This tastes exactly like I remember!” Hannah exclaimed.
“It is really good, Mike.” Christine said.
“While I’m out, I will go and get some more definitive groceries so if you think of anything, you might write it down. I didn’t eat much at home before so I just ordered what we needed for last night and today.” Mike said.
“I’ll look through the pantry.” Christine replied.
“There’s a deep freeze in there and another in my mudroom. Plenty of meat in there.” Mike said.
“Alright.” Christine said.
“And when you three feel up to it, we’ll go clothes shopping. Today won’t be a good day for it.” Mike remarked with a sideways glance towards Christine. She knew what he meant. Instead of looking down, she reached under the table and squeezed his knee.
“I’m excited to get to go to school!” Hannah remarked.
“I figure we’ll need to do some catch-up.” Christine replied. The last several years, it took everything Christine had to just keep her and the girls alive. Education hadn’t been a priority.
“We’ll figure all that out.” Mike said.
“When do you go to work?” Lizzie asked.
“I’ve taken a few weeks off. I might need to deal with stuff at home or even go in for a bit but for the most part; you’re stuck with me for the next bit.” Mike replied.
“Will you have to deploy?” Hannah asked, rather fearfully.
“I don’t know, sweetheart. I don’t think I will be anytime soon.” Mike answered.
“Hannah; we are safe here. Everything will be okay.” Christine remarked.
“Yes, and even if I have to leave; I have a lot of friends around here who will check in. Do you remember Russ Jeter?” Mike asked.
“Kind of.” Hannah replied.
“He lives two doors down and there’s another couple from the James that lives between us.” Mike said.
“That does make me feel better.” Christine remarked.
“I love this neighborhood.” Mike told the girls.
“I’m sure we will too. It seems very close-knit.” Christine said.
“Dad, you have a pool?” Katie asked, pointing out the French Doors.
“I do and when its warmer, you can swim to your heart’s content.” Mike replied.
“Not Mom though…because of the scars.” Hannah remarked.
“Hannah, not right now.” Christine admonished. Mike and Christine made eye contact and Christine just nodded at him. She knew they were going to have ‘the conversation’ soon.
“Dad; can you maybe pick me out a book?” Lizzie asked, effectively changing the subject.
“Absolutely.” Mike replied.
“Breakfast is delicious. I can cook dinner. Anything special you want, Mike?” Christine asked.
“I would kill for your fried chicken.” Mike replied.
“Mashed potatoes and white gravy.” Hannah chimed in.
“Honey butter rolls.” Lizzie added.
“Apple pie with whipped cream.” Mike said.
“I’d better start that list.” Christine said with a laugh. Mike got up and grabbed her a notepad and pen.
“Only if you feel up to it. I know you are not feeling well.” Mike remarked.
“I actually slept really good.” Christine said.
“Us too. Our beds were amazing.” Lizzie said.
“At some point, we will redecorate things to how you all like them.” Mike said.
“Mike; really, everything is lovely and we appreciate it.” Christine replied.
“Dad, can you pick up board games and stuff like we used to do?” Lizzie asked.
“You bet, honey.” Mike said with a laugh as he began clearing the table. The girls ran off to their bedrooms and Christine began going through the pantry. “So, scars?” Mike asked.
“Yeah, Mike. There’s a lot to unpack here.” Christine said.
“For the record…I am sorry.” Mike remarked. Christine turned towards him and put her arms around him.
“For what?” Christine asked, figuring he was talking about the woman he’d been seeing.
“Had I not been who I was; whatever happened to you wouldn’t have happened. Had I been home, you wouldn’t have gone through what you did. Had I not been so career-focused, you wouldn’t have had to grieve for Lucas on your own.” Mike said.
“Mike; you can’t carry that with you. Go, do what you need to do with that other woman. Just make sure that it is what your heart wants. Your brain is telling you that you have to be here with me. But, if you love her…” Christine started.
“I actually don’t at all. It was completely casual with Emily. I’m just not sure that is how she sees it.” Mike admitted.
“That can be painful.” Christine remarked.
“Look…I…am sorry. Not just for what happened, but for all the stuff before and even how I treated you yesterday.” Mike said. It shocked Christine slightly.
“How about you go do whatever you need to do and then come back and we’ll figure things out?” Christine said. She wasn’t even sure of herself, but she gave Mike a long hug. She was a little shocked that he leaned into her slightly.
What Christine didn’t want was for her marriage to become codependent. It had been before. She not only had to heal herself, but heal her marriage. And Christine suspected Mike may have cared more for Emily then he was willing to admit.
Mike left with a large list of things to get and Christine settled with the girls in the living room after starting some laundry. It was later afternoon when Mike got back, carrying several grocery sacks of items. He seemed quiet and upset, even slightly short with them. The girls went upstairs and Christine touched his back.
“I’ll start dinner soon but are you okay? You seem off.” Christine asked.
“It was rough. With Emily. She doesn’t understand why me continuing a relationship with her is not appropriate.” Mike admitted.
“Mike; again if you care about her? I don’t know what sort of wife I can be to you.” Christine admitted.
“She even suggested a ‘menage a trois.’ Whatever that is.” Mike said. His French accent was horrific and it made her laugh.
“Its…basically an open marriage.” Christine explained.
“I looked it up and told her I was not interested in that.” Mike said.
“But…?” Christine said.
“Something is off with her. I am committed to this, here with you and the girls.” Mike said.
“Mike…could she be pregnant?” Christine asked.
“She told me once she couldn’t have children. I don’t know rather its that she can’t or won’t.” Mike answered.
“Okay. Well…we love you. The girls and I.” Christine replied.
“And I love you all too.” Mike said.
“Alright; I am going to work on dinner.” Christine said before giving him a kiss on the cheek.
“I can help?” Mike asked.
“I’ll be fine.” Christine said.
“Just holler if you need me.” Mike said.
“Mike; thank you.” Christine replied, touching his shoulder.
“We still need to talk sometime.” Mike said simply.
“I know. I’m dreading it.” Christine replied.
“It’ll be alright. I just need to find out who held you. Allison Shaw has been dead for a few years and I suspect you weren’t in hiding all those years?” Mike asked.
“No, we were only in hiding for about a month. I didn’t want to lead them directly to your doorstep.” Christine said.
“Then someone was colluding with her before she died and they held you and the girls…I would say for blackmail against me.” Mike replied.
“I do remember they often talked about ‘using’ us. I would guess blackmail was exactly what they had in mind.” Christine answered.
“Different definitions for ‘using.’” Mike replied.
“Yeah…they did use me for other things.” Christine remarked as she began mixing the batter together for the chicken.
“They?” Mike encouraged gently.
“Three of them.” Christine said, staring off into space.
“Men?” Mike continued.
“Yes.” Christine replied.
“Chris…slowly, I will extract little things. But, at any point, if you want to just talk…find me.” Mike said.
“I’m scared.” Christine admitted.
“It will be a really painful conversation but once it’s done; it’ll be easier. It’ll feel a lot better to get it off your chest.” Mike explained.
“Mike; thank you. I’m not ready…yet but I’ll work on it.” Christine replied. She leaned up and gave him a kiss on the cheek.
“I am going to find the girls and find something to do with them but if you need me; just holler.” Mike said.
It actually was a really nice day. Mike and the girls played board games and Christine cooked and baked. They ate dinner together and the girls went to bed early. Christine thought she might try talking to Mike, but found him sound asleep in his own room. She put the book and his glasses on his nightstand and shut the bedside lamp off after pulling the blanket up.

Chapter 3
“I just don’t understand why it has be me that is broken up with. She’s not been around in years.” Emily complained.
“My wife and daughters need me. And she is still my wife.” Mike insisted.
“She chose to be gone.” Emily replied.
“For a good portion of the time; she was held against her will.” Mike said.
“It’s not fair.” Emily said with her arms across her chest.
“Emily; we are adults. I have to concentrate on Christine, Hannah and Lizzie and you need to do whatever you do. You knew going into this that this was casual.” Mike said.
“And if I go to the media?” Emily threatened.
“For what? You are not a woman scorned. I am simply breaking up before you do. If you go to the media, it won’t look good on you.” Mike questioned.
“It might not look good on you, either.” Emily remarked.
“Goodbye, Emily.” Mike replied. He walked out and as soon as he got to his truck; he sent an email to Ensign Dobbs to draft a press release on Christine and the girls reappearing. He would send the draft to Mike for approval. What Mike didn’t want was for Christine to be hurt and Emily’s little threat drove that concern.
The girls were watching a movie and Mike found Christine in her bedroom; reading a book. He knocked on the door and Christine looked up at him.
“How did it go?” Christine asked. Mike sat down on the bed and fidgeted with his hand.
“Not great. So…I have drafted a press release, detailing that you and the girls have turned up, that I am concentrating on my family, you were held hostage and that is still under investigation.” Mike explained.
“Okay?” Christine asked.
“Emily threatened to go to the media. I don’t know for what. I recorded the conversation. She acted very childish.” Mike continued.
“Mike…are you absolutely sure about this? We could work out something with the girls. I would get a job and move into an apartment. I’d need help for a while but…” Christine asked.
“I’m sure. If anything, Emily’s reaction has solidified my decision.” Mike replied.
“So…I’m going to have to give that statement sooner than I might like, aren’t I?” Christine asked.
“Yes. I can have a female staff member take it if you’d like.” Mike offered.
“Honestly, no. I am only comfortable with giving it to you.” Christine answered.
“Okay.” Mike replied.
“I would like to wait until the girls are asleep. They have been through enough without rehashing it.” Christine answered.
“Deal.” Mike said.
“So…Emily could have political ramifications for you?” Christine asked.
“She could but choosing to stay with my wife and daughters will seem more palatable to most people. I’m not terribly worried.” Mike answered.
“I think there’s something motivating her.” Christine replied.
“She’s very childish and used to getting what she wants. I broke up with her before she could break up with me.” Mike said as he stood up.
“I think I’ll take a nap.” Christine said.
“Do you want me to wake you when Ensign Dobbs gets the release drafted?” Mike asked.
“I’m fine with whatever you decide.” Christine replied. She pulled him back down and kissed his cheek.
“Get some rest.” Mike said. He walked out of the bedroom and to his own. Finally his phone dinged with the email of the press release.
“It is with great pleasure that I announce that my wife, Christine and daughters, Lizzie and Hannah; have been located and returned to me. They were held hostage until approximately one month ago and have endured a lot. Those details are still under investigation.
I am taking a few weeks off with my family and will determine from there what my next steps are. I was in a relationship with a local businesswoman, not knowing my wife was alive. I have broken off that relationship. I feel the need to be there for my wife and my daughters.
I have been in constant contact with the President and my colleagues and remain updated about any active deployments and activities going on. I request privacy and understanding going forward, not only for myself, my family and the woman I had been dating.”
Mike made a few modifications and sent it back to be sent to all media outlets, friendly and non-friendly. Within thirty minutes; the major outlets began running the story; calling it a ‘feel-good story’ and a fairy-tale in the making. People wanted a nice story after so much bad.
Christine slept through the afternoon. She fixed them dinner and they ate dinner together; something Mike thoroughly enjoyed. It was all something he could get used to. They watched a movie with the girls before Lizzie and Hannah went to bed. Mike grabbed a notebook and a pen from his office. He sat down on the couch next to Christine and nodded at her.
“I’ll also record you so I’m less likely to have to come back to you with questions.” Mike explained. Christine nodded, before tucking her elbows onto her knees and covering her face. “Take your time. I promise; it’ll feel better when you’re done.” Mike said gently.
“We were at that safe zone in Deer Park. Our food supply was getting a bit thin and these people showed up with food and water. It was too good to be true. I know that now…” Christine started.
Three hours later; Christine was exhausted. There had been tears, anger, pacing and finally; just exhaustion. It was well after midnight and Mike put his notes in his office. Christine was waiting for him by the door.
“If you want to get to bed; that’s fine. I’m going up too. I’ll type up the report tomorrow.” Mike said gently.
“I…was hoping we could sleep in the same bed.” Christine admitted. It surprised Mike. Christine had been through horrific things. The worst he’d ever heard. “But if you don’t want to?” Christine said.
“Would it make you feel better?” Mike asked.
“I think so.” Christine answered.
“Your bedroom or mine?” Mike asked.
“Mine please. The bed is so comfortable.” Christine replied.
“Alright. I’ll change and meet you in there.” Mike answered.
“Mike; thank you.” Christine replied. Mike nodded before walking into his own bedroom. He changed into a pair of pajama pants and a t-shirt, grabbed his cellphone, checked on both girls and then walked into Christine’s room. She was wearing a pair of pajamas and was sitting up in bed. Mike laid down next to Christine and shut the bedside light off.
“If you get scared–wake me up. I can go to my bedroom.” Mike said.
“I don’t want it to be a crutch…the separate bedrooms. You deserve a marriage. Not a partnership.” Christine said. She wrapped her arms around his middle and put her head on his chest. “Mike, I love you.” Christine said.
“I love you too.” Mike answered; kissing her on the top of the head. In no time; Christine was sound asleep in his arms. Mike took a bit longer; due to the massive list of things he had to do in the morning. He should have drafted an email to Ensign Dobbs to give him assignment first thing in the morning but Mike was overwhelmed, as much as Christine.
Hannah woke up with a nightmare at about five; so Mike got up with her. It gave him time to draft the email and spend some one-on-one time with Hannah. At some point, he’d have to interview the girls. Or maybe he should insist on someone else doing it? But who would he trust enough?
Hannah fell back asleep next to him on the couch. He threw a blanket over her and ran his hand through her long brown hair. It reminded him of Christine’s hair when they married. He heard Christine coming down the stairs and she smiled at him.
“She woke up about five with a nightmare. Thankfully; she just fell back asleep.” Mike explained.
“Good. She looks so little like that.” Christine remarked.
“She is small for her age.” Mike replied as they walked into the kitchen.
“With good food, she’ll gain weight. She might just be a bit…stunted.” Christine remarked. Mike handed Christine a cup of coffee and they settled at the kitchen island.
“So…I will be working on typing up the report. I will need to send it in. The girls are going to also have to be interviewed. The question I have is…do I do it or does someone I trust do it?” Mike asked.
“That is up to you. I wanted to tell you. It might be too uncomfortable for the girls to talk to you, though. Maybe leave it up to them?” Christine suggested.
“I’ll do it if they need me to but I’m not sure how much I can listen to. Last night was rough.” Mike admitted.
“I’m sorry, Mike.” Christine replied.
“You don’t have anything to be sorry for. Nothing. I did really enjoy getting to sleep next to you.” Mike answered.
“I felt safe. Feel safe.” Christine remarked.
“Good. That is my intention.” Mike replied before kissing her forehead.
“And Mike…I appreciate you. More than you’ll ever know. I know last night was hard for you, probably harder than it was for me. When I wanted to talk to only you, I was only thinking about myself.” Christine admitted.
“I would have wanted to be the one. It would have bothered me if I couldn’t.” Mike said as he pulled her into a hug.
“I still fit.” Christine teased, revisiting an old joke.
“You do…but you could gain some weight. Little thin.” Mike teased. He kissed the top of her head and smiled.
“Maybe once the girls feel more comfortable; we can on a date?” Christine suggested.
“I could have someone…maybe a female colleague stay with them? I’m not sure I’m ready to leave them alone yet.” Mike replied.
“That might be a suggestion?” Christine remarked.
“Anything special you want to do?” Mike asked.
“Italian food. And ice cream afterwards.” Christine answered. It made Mike laugh.
“That is doable.” Mike said. He gave Christine another kiss and smiled as she laid her head on his chest. He wrapped his arms around her and rocked her back and forth.

Mike smiled as Christine walked down the stairs, wearing a knee length dress, sweater, and ballet type shoes. She had been looking forward to their date for a week solid and Mike had been able to get Wolf and Azima to stay with the girls. Azima had plans of junk food and movies with the girls and Wolf was just there because it made Mike feel better.
“You look beautiful.” Mike said before giving Christine a kiss.
“We need to get your eyes checked. Alright; girls. Are you going to be okay?” Christine asked just as Mike let Wolf and Azima in. He made the introductions and Azima began laying out all the junk food and DVDs out.
“I think they will be just fine. You go and enjoy yourselves.” Wolf said. Both Mike and Christine gave the girls hugs and kisses. They left and Mike drove to the high-end Italian restaurant that he had made reservations for. He led Christine in and they were quickly seated.
“Red wine?” Mike asked.
“Sure.” Christine answered as Mike poured a glass of wine for both of them.
“Order whatever you like.” Mike told her. Christine was reading through the menu and finally tapped her finger.
“I think I want the chicken parmesan if that’s okay? It is expensive.” Christine asked.
“Order whatever you like. I am going to get the seafood sampler.” Mike said.
“Thank you for this, Mike. It is really nice.” Christine said. Even though she was dressed up, people stared. She was dangerously thin.
“You’re welcome. I would like to do something special with the girls soon. Just don’t know what.” Mike remarked.
“They will be happy no matter what.” Christine replied after the waitress took their order.
“I did buy you something. I should have given it to you at the house.” Mike said. He pulled the ring box out of his jacket pocket. He popped it open and Christine smiled, with tears in his eyes.
“Oh, Mike. You didn’t have to do that.” Christine said. Mike took her left hand and put thing wedding band and engagement ring on her ring finger.
“Its a bit fancier than your original set. I thought you might enjoy the more modern setting.” Mike said.
“Thank you, Mike. Its the symbolic meaning that I missed, not so much the design but they are beautiful.” Christine said. She leaned over the table and stroked Mike’s cheek.
“I’m just glad they fit. Katie helped me pick them out. She really enjoyed it.” Mike replied.
“I bet she did. She’s talked about her day out with you all week, but she left this part out!” Christine remarked.
“I asked her to. Hannah is really excited to go. I thought I might
make it a monthly thing.” Mike replied.
“Can this be too? The dinner?” Christine asked.
“Absolutely. I was already figuring on that.” Mike said as their food arrived.
“This looks amazing.” Christine remarked.
“Eat up but save room for ice cream.” Mike said. Christine smiled at him and they both began eating.
Mike thoroughly enjoyed the evening. He probably would never have a normal marriage again but he could handle this. Even though the physical intimacy was probably gone, he still could laugh with Christine, discuss things, and even sleep next to her. That he could live with.
As they were driving home with the ice cream; Mike squeezed Christine’s hand on the console. She fortunately didn’t shrink away as she sometimes did when he touched her. She was really trying and had her first counseling appointment earlier in the week. It had been traumatic, but Christine had persevered. It was going to be a long and hard road.
The girls ate their ice cream and told Mike and Christine about their evening with Wolf and Azima. They particularly loved Azima. Quickly enough, they both went to bed and Mike locked up for the night before joining Christine.
“Can I sleep in here?” Mike asked. The first two nights after her counseling appointment, Christine didn’t want Mike near her.
“Please.” Christine answered as she took her robe off.
“I was hoping so.” Mike replied. He settled into bed and smiled when Christine laid down next to him.
“Mike; I am sorry for that. It’s not right to take my fears out on you. You’ve certainly never hurt me.” Christine remarked.
“You have nothing to be sorry for. I just have to accept that there will be times this marriage is more of a companionship instead of a partnership. The most I can hope for is being able to sleep next to you when you feel up to it.” Mike commented.
“That hurts, doesn’t it?” Christine asked.
“Yes, honestly. I feel like our marriage has been stunted. Remember how we used to plan for my retirement and the kids leaving the house? We would travel, buy a little farmhouse where you could garden. I could do wood-working.” Mike replied. He hated discussing it with Christine. She had so much to work through. She didn’t need to worry about his selfish desires.
“We can still do those things, Mike. The only thing is, I suspect it might be a bit longer before the girls leave.” Christine replied. She had turned to where they were looking at each other.
“And that is fine. I…just want something more out of our marriage, and it seems very selfish considering all you’ve been through.” Mike admitted.
“You want what we might have had if the Red Flu and all the stuff had never occurred?” Christine asked for clarification.
“Yeah and that is impossible.” Mike said.
“It might surprise you to learn; I want the very same thing. I want you to not just be the person who comforts me when I have a bad dream. I want you to do everything in your power to keep the bad away…which you do. Mike; you could not have protected me or the girls. You are trying to shoulder something you shouldn’t. I need you to be more than my friend. I need you to be my lover. Right now…it can’t be the physical act, but you are already my lover in so many other ways. You are the person that I can reach for, and who will be there. You listen.” Christine said. She pulled Mike into a hug and held him as tight as possible.
“I want to retire.” Mike said simply. Christine pulled away slightly and looked at him for a long moment.
“Mike…I’m not asking that of you.” Christine replied.
“No…but I can’t leave you and the girls again. As long as I stay in the Navy; there’s a chance of that. I need to be home with you.” Mike said.
“I love you, Mike. And you are not being selfish about our marriage. You deserve a normal, healthy marriage and I will do everything in my power to ensure that you have it.” Christine said as she ran her fingers through his hair.
“I love you too.” Mike replied, giving her a gentle kiss.
“Can you hold me tonight?” Christine asked.
“You don’t ever have to ask.” Mike replied before shutting off the light and pulling her onto his chest. She immediately cuddled as close as she could.

Chapter 5
Mike was thoroughly enjoying his freedom. He had made a habit of taking Christine out once a week, and then girls once a week, separately. Too soon for his liking, he would be going back to work; which made him think about retirement. He had gotten repeated texts from Emily, begging him to meet up and to call her, but he never responded. Until, two days before he was due to go back, Ensign Dobbs rang the doorbell. Mike let him in and led him to his office.
“What’s wrong?” Mike asked, shutting the door.
“Sir…I tried to get a hold of Admiral Chandler or Master Chief…honestly anyone, but no one was available…Ms. Carter contacted the office. She is saying she is carrying your child. That she is four months along. She showed me an ultrasound photo.” Ensign Dobbs answered.
“Did she look pregnant?” Mike asked.
“Honestly, Sir…no. But my sister didn’t show until she was almost six months along. I was trying not to look. I quietly asked Mary Ellen, and she also said no.” Ensign Dobbs replied, speaking of a civilian employee that Mike really liked, kind of a motherly figure to them all.
“Does anyone else know?” Mike asked.
“No. Mary Ellen might suspect but I felt it better to ask her then one of the other staff members. She was more likely to keep the confidence.” Ensign Dobbs answered.
“Alright; I am going to arrange a meeting with Ms. Carter and myself at the office. It is asking too much but I ask that you and Mary Ellen attend. So another party is present.” Mike said.
“Of course, Sir.” Ensign Dobbs replied. Just then, Christine knocked on the door and stuck her head in.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t realize you were in a meeting. Can I get you something to drink, Ensign…I’m sorry, I don’t remember your name?” Christine asked, stumbling.
“Christine, this is Ensign Daniel Dobbs. He’s been my assistant for approximately a year.” Mike said.
“Mrs. Slattery, pleased to meet you again.” Ensign Dobbs replied, shaking Christine’s hand.
“Pleased to meet you again. Would you like something to eat or drink? I can make you a sandwich and I think we have iced tea.” Christine offered.
“Oh, no. Thank you, Ma’am. I was just leaving. Sir?” Ensign Dobbs asked for permission to be dismissed.
“You are dismissed. I will let you know on that meeting.” Mike said.
“I’ll show you out.” Christine offered.
“Thank you, Ma’am but I know the way.” Ensign Dobbs said. He gave her a charming smile, while Mike nodded over her head. As soon as he was gone, Christine spoke.
“What’s wrong?” Christine asked.
“Emily showed up at the office, claiming she is pregnant. About four months along. Showed a sonogram photo but didn’t look to be pregnant.” Mike said.
“And that its your child?” Christine asked.
“Yes.” Mike answered. He sat Christine down and sat down beside her on the couch.
“Is it possible?” Christine asked.
“I made a point to always use protection and she said she was on birth control, but we both know, that isn’t fool proof.” Mike answered.
“No, it isn’t.” Christine replied.
“So, I am arranging for a meeting at my office, with Ensign Dobbs and one of the civilian secretaries and Emily.” Mike explained.
“And then?” Christine asked.
“I will have to meet with the President. And from there, if she is pregnant and if the baby is mine…you make the calls.” Mike answered.
“Will she want to raise a baby?” Christine asked.
“Unknown. And unknown what my involvement will have to be.” Mike commented.
“Mike; if that baby is yours, you will have to be involved. It will be a far bigger controversy if you are not. And I don’t think you’d be capable of it.” Christine replied.
“And you?” Mike asked. Christine had finally began making some headway in her counseling. Mike didn’t want to derail it.
“I don’t know. It’ll depend on you and her, I suppose. She could be saying this just to get you back. And it might work. I have nothing to offer you.” Christine said as she stood up. Mike caught her hand and pulled her back down, landing her on his lap.
“Except a very long and mostly happy marriage and the fact that I love you. I don’t love her. It was casual.” Mike said, helping Christine off his lap, knowing it made her uncomfortable.
“Mike, there is nothing more intimate than having a child with someone. I know because I had three with you. You will want to be involved in this baby’s life. And you should be. As much as I love you and I want this marriage to continue, I won’t stand in the way.” Christine said.
“I’m not even sure she is really pregnant. Or that the baby is mine.” Mike said. Christine squeezed his knee and smiled at him.
“If she is, once the baby is born, you can insist on a DNA test, but
until then you have to support her.” Christine replied.
“She is not mother material. You would fight to the death for one of the girls. She would not.” Mike said.
“One of the things we have to be prepared for is if she is pregnant and it is your child, she might not choose to raise it. Abortion are illegal now, correct?” Christine asked.
“Yes. There are black market abortions, but I cannot in good conscious advocate that; morally, ethically or politically.” Mike answered.
“No, of course not. You also could not give the child up for adoption. So…I would be raising the child.” Christine replied.
“Only if you would want…let’s get through this meeting and go from there.” Mike said.
“I would raise the child. Even love the child. After losing Lucas, I couldn’t imagine giving up any child or letting you give one up.” Christine said.
“I appreciate that and I love you for it. Let’s just get through this and figure out what we’ll tell Lizzie and Hannah. There is no doubt that Emily will go to the media.” Mike replied.
“I’ll talk to them. You contend with that meeting. I don’t envy you that.” Christine remarked. They both stood up and Mike pulled Christine into a hug.
“I hope you know how much I love you?” Mike asked.
“I love you too. Can you just hold me for a moment?” Christine asked.
“Happy to.” Mike answered. Christine cuddled as close as she could and Mike kissed the top of her head.
“It’s going to be okay.” She finally said as she pulled away.
“I hope so.” Mike said. Christine patted his cheek and gave him a smile before walking out of the office. Mike texted Emily back, demanding a meeting at his office at two pm that day; and contacted his attorney. He would also be there, with NDAs. Mike was not worried about Ensign Dobbs or Mary Ellen, but the attorney insisted on it.

Mike found it laughable that his attorney came in with a bottle of antacid but within five minutes of the start of the meeting, Mike understood why. Emily was being particularly childish; whining about morning sickness and stretch marks. Finally, Mike spoke up.
“So; what is your plan with this child?” Mike asked.
“What do you mean?” Emily asked as she filed her nails.
“Do you want to raise it?” Mike asked.
“I never wanted kids.” Emily replied.
“I’ve spoken with my client. Admiral Slattery and his wife are willing to raise the child if you are unwilling. We can come with a custody agreement and visitation schedule.” Mike’s attorney, David explained.
“I don’t want a custody agreement or visitation schedule.” Emily replied.
“So, what do you want?” Mike asked.
“You.” Emily replied with a salacious grin. Mike heard Ensign Dobbs groan under his breath.
“That is not an option. If you don’t want this child, Christine and I will raise it. You can choose your level of involvement. But you will submit to the blood work and such that an OB-GYN of my choosing asks for. You will have regular drug-tests and once the baby is born; you can have some time with it.” Mike replied.
“I don’t want time with a kid.” Emily replied. Mary Ellen choked in a napkin.
“I’m sorry…I probably shouldn’t voice anything, but that baby…you’ll have carried it for nine months. It will have heard your heartbeat. It needs the time with you. Frankly, it is cruel not to want time with it.” Mary Ellen said.
“I don’t really care about the baby. I’m sure Mrs. Slattery will do whatever needs to be done.” Emily replied.
“So…as soon as the child is born, you want it taken away and you will sign paperwork to terminate your parental rights?” David asked.
“Yes.” Emily said.
“Alright. I will cover the cost of your medical care, any maternity clothes within reason…a budget will be set, and your time off work after the birth; approximately six weeks. Fair?” Mike asked David.
“Seems fair to me.” David replied.
“Mary Ellen; you’ve had children. Is six weeks sufficient to recover after childbirth?” Mike asked.
“More than. Most of it is to care for and bond with the baby.” Mary Ellen replied.
“And you will sign a NDA.” David told Emily.
“Why?” Emily replied.
“Because I cannot trust you to not go to the media. I will do right by this baby and I will make sure you are cared for during and immediately after your pregnancy. I will also be doing a press release explaining the predicament I find myself in, after your pregnancy is confirmed by the OB-GYN of my choosing.” Mike explained.
“So, you can talk to the media but I can’t?” Emily asked.
“Because as a public figure, I have to get out ahead of this and I can’t trust you to tell the truth.” Mike said.
“I had spoken with Admiral Slattery beforehand and have the paperwork drawn up, utilizing a couple scenarios but if you would like to speak to your attorney?” David suggested.
“I don’t have one and I don’t want to. If you have the paperwork already, I’ll sign it now. Can I sign the paperwork to terminate my rights now?” Emily asked.
“Frankly, I don’t have it typed up yet and generally, the mother doesn’t sign it until after the baby is born.” David said.
“I would like you to go to the doctor before you terminate rights too. Maybe if you hear the heartbeat you will change your mind?” Might suggested gently. Like Mary Ellen, he could not fathom wanting nothing to do with a child.
“From here on out, you will do all your communicating with me and my office. No more contacting Admiral Slattery. I will keep him updated and when you go into labor, I will call him so he can be in the delivery room.” David said, giving Emily his card.
“Oh, I don’t want to go into labor. Can I just schedule a c-section? And be asleep for it. Mike can take the baby from the nursery.” Emily asked.
“That is something that will have to be discussed with the OB-GYN, You will also sign the paperwork so my office can access and be made aware of your healthcare paperwork.” David said.
“Fine.” Emily asked, pointing at the paperwork in David’s hand.
“This is the NDA. You will sign here and here. Please read and sign. If you talk to anyone, you are civilly liable. This is the contract concerning your expenses while you are pregnant and just after. Read over that as well. And this is the form allowing my office to access any doctor’s notes and such.” David explained. Emily barely read them before signing all three forms.
“And you’ll have that form where I terminate my rights?” Emily asked.
“I can draw them up but I agree with Admiral Slattery. Wait until you hear the baby’s heartbeat. It will be ironclad and I don’t want you have second thoughts.” David said.
“That is not going to happen. If I could have an abortion, I would. I could care less what happens to this kid.” Emily said.
“I am afraid you are going to regret that decision but it is your decision. This baby will be taken care of. Loved dearly.” Mike replied.
“I don’t really care about all that.” Emily said as she got up.
“My office will be in touch with your appointment with an OB-GYN. A paralegal will be attending.” David said.
“That is fine.” Emily said as she left.
“That was too easy.” Ensign Dobbs remarked.
“I just don’t understand a woman like that.” Mary Ellen said as she filled their coffee cups.
“Some women are just not born to be mothers. Thankfully, Christine will fill the role for this baby. I don’t know how she has the strength to do it but she does.” Mike replied.
“I shouldn’t say this, but perhaps she feels she doesn’t have a choice. She may be afraid she will lose you if she doesn’t agree to raise this child?” David suggested.
“That is a thought.” Mike said. Both Mary Ellen and Ensign Dobbs made their exit.
“Let my office draft the statement. I will send it to you for approval.” David remarked. Mike nodded. They both stood up and Mike shook David’s hand.
“Thank you for all this. I appreciate it.” Mike said.
“You’re welcome.” David said. They parted ways and Mike headed home. Christine had told the girls the night before. He could feel their disappointment. He found Christine in the kitchen, reading over a recipe.
“Hey, how did it go?” Christine asked.
“She wants to sign the termination of parental rights already. My attorney is handling everything and made it clear that she was to contact his office…not me or my office.” Mike explained.
“Maybe that is for the best.” Christine remarked.
“Are you absolutely sure you want to do this? You do have a choice.” Mike asked.
“Mike, I want with you at any cost. And frankly, a baby isn’t a hard pass for me. I knew before I found you that there was a chance you’d moved on and had other children. I knew that you would love any child and how much you might miss our kids.” Christine said.
“How are the girls?” Mike asked as he pulled Christine into a hug.
“They’ve been pretty quiet today. Just give them time and space. Lizzie in particular is hurting. Give her space but let her know when the time is right that you love her.” Christine said.
“She’s so quiet.” Mike remarked.
“She is not the same girl you remember, but she does love you and she admires you.” Christine said. She gave him a kiss on the cheek and let him go.
“I’m going to change clothes. I love you.” Mike said. Christine patted his cheek.
“I love you too, Mike.” Christine said. He headed upstairs and on the way to his room; he looked in on Lizzie, who was reading on her bed.
“Hey; so tomorrow is Saturday and I go back to work Monday. Would you want to go for breakfast like we used to?” Mike asked from the doorway.
“Sure.” Lizzie replied. She only gave him a small smile.
“I know this place that makes French Toast like you always loved. They even put cream cheese between the slices.” Mike said.
“Cool.” Lizzie replied. It told Mike she was done talking. He bent over and kissed the top of her head.
“I love you, sweetheart.” Mike said. He could continue the conversation but decided to just leave Lizzie alone.
Thankfully, Hannah was much more chatty. She was more concerned about him going back to work. She was scared of him being deployed again and Mike wasn’t sure how to assure her that she would be safe. But at least he knew what her fears were.

Chapter 7
Mike went back to work but his heart was not in it. The girls were suddenly really struggling because of Emily. Christine was even a bit suspicious. The tests had come back, and Emily was indeed pregnant. It made Mike’s head hurt. One day, about two weeks after the announcement about Emily’s pregnancy came out, Mike was called to a meeting with the President. Thankfully, Mike really liked the new President but he was concerned for the meeting.
“President Davis?” Mike stood at attention.
“Admiral Slattery, please have a seat. Can I get you some coffee?” President Davis asked.
“No, thank you, Sir.” Mike answered. President Davis sat down and pointed at a plate of pastries.
“Alright, Mike; you’ve had a lot hit you in recent weeks. The young woman coming forward has created a few wrinkles.” President Davis remarked. Mike was struck with familiarity the President used.
“How much trouble am I in?” Mike asked.
“None, professionally. Your wife could create wrinkles but she isn’t. So, you can’t be brought up on Conduct Unbecoming. While it is less than convenient that this young woman has come forward; I am more concerned about your mental state, in making the decisions you have to make. Decisions that can cost lives. I just want to make sure you are not distracted in making those decisions.” President Davis said.
“I am. Sir, I am considering retirement but due to the added financial pressure with this baby; I can’t retire at the moment. Maybe after he or she is born I can.” Mike admitted.
“I appreciate your honesty. So, going forward, because of your level of distraction; contact me before making crucial decisions. We will make them together. Is there a way to ease the financial burden?” President Davis asked.
“No. Christine cannot work. Mentally and physically, she just isn’t there. I can’t ask it of her. She and the girls are requiring a lot of medical, dental and counseling appointments and my benefits package cannot cover it all. And I am paying all of Emily’s medical costs, as well as food she needs while pregnant, clothing…and once she has the baby; I am supporting her for six weeks. Because she is not my dependant, none of her medical costs are covered.” Mike explained.
“Does your wife know about the added pressures?” President Davis asked.
“Not to the full extent. She knows money is a little tighter and she can economize. To be clear, I am holding my head above water, but I’m skating.” Mike admitted.
“What happens if that baby is born and isn’t yours?” President Davis asked.
“We’ve not gotten there yet in the scenarios.” Mike admitted.
“And your wife is okay raising another woman’s baby?” President Davis asked.
“Yes or so she says. My wife is a really wonderful woman.” Mike replied.
“Son, she may feel she has no other choice. Because of what has happened to her, she can’t stand on her own and take care of your daughters. That is something you have to evaluate. I will look and see if I can find any sort of benefits of people who were ‘held’ by the regional leaders. The difference is, your wife and daughters were held longer and survived a lot worse. You need to make some decisions regarding retirement. Bottom line; your heart isn’t in it anymore. And there is nothing wrong with that. How many years have you worked public service jobs?” President Davis asked.
“I become a cop at twenty years old, joined the Navy at thirty and I’m staring at my fiftieth birthday.” Mike admitted.
“You’ve done your bit. When the time is right; make the break. I’ll see what I can do to get your wife and daughters some help. I know you feel it is your job to take care of them, but our government failed them. We hold some responsibility in it,” President Davis replied.
“Thank you, Sir.” Mike said as he stood up.
“One last piece of advice. Be honest with your wife. About the financial pressure. She is probably figuring it out but she wants to be your partner. Let her be.” President Davis said.
Mike shook the President’s hand and left. He was glad for the support. It was late enough in the day, Mike decided to go home rather than going back to the office, He walked into the house and smiled at the smell of whatever Christine was cooking or baking, She had just taken the pan out of the oven when he came in.
“Hey, you are home early.” Christine said. She’d had a horrific nightmare the night before so Mike kept his distance.
“Yeah. I had a meeting with the President and just decided to come home.” Mike answered as he sat down at the kitchen island,
“How is everything going?” Christine asked.
“Its…difficult. But it is a bed I made.” Mike said.
“If you didn’t have to deal with me and the girls; it wouldn’t be such a headache.” Christine remarked.
“Hey, that isn’t true. The reason it was only casual with Emily was because I couldn’t move past you. It was…physical.” Mike said.
“Which is not something I can do. At least at present point.” Christine said. Mike stood up and walked around the island. He gently touched Christine’s shoulders.
“If that is not something you can ever do again, I am fine. I have you back. Exactly what I wanted.” Mike remarked.
“Mike; you couldn’t have wanted this. All the headaches and pain. Maybe you did want us back but you wanted me and the girls the way we were. Now we are damaged goods. And you are here because of a sense of loyalty.” Christine said.
“Where is this coming from?” Mike asked. Christine had tears in her eyes, which was rare. Christine picked up a piece of paper from the other counter and handed it to him. It was a letter from Emily. Not necessarily threatening but very demeaning.
“She does have a point.” Christine remarked. Her arms were crossed over her chest and she was leaned against the counter.
“Do you trust me?” Mike asked.
“Yes, of course.” Christine said.
“Then trust me when I say; I only want you and if that can’t happen, I still have you close. I might have had sex with Emily, but it wasn’t right. I love you and that hasn’t or won’t change.” Mike said.
“What scares me is that we are going to have her in our lives for the rest of our lives. Even if she isn’t around, her baby will be. What will we tell the baby?” Christine asked.
“Do you want to do this? You do have a choice.” Mike asked.
“You won’t get by without knowing your child and I cannot allow an innocent child to suffer.” Christine replied.
“So you don’t?” Mike asked.
“I didn’t say that.” Christine argued.
“You didn’t not say it either.” Mike argued back. He didn’t realize what he was doing but he was standing over Christine and she was beginning to hyperventilate. Suddenly, Lizzie came around the corner.
“Dad, what are you doing?” Lizzie asked as she led Christine into the living room. She helped Christine sit down. “Okay, Mom; breathe slow. In and out.” Lizzie said as she evil eyed Mike. He knelt down next to Christine and watched as she fought to control her breathing.
“Christine; it's okay. It’s okay, Babe.” Mike said as he touched Christine’s hand. She didn’t pull away but Lizzie slapped his arm away.
“Don’t touch her! Leave her alone. Come on, Mom. Let’s go upstairs. You need to rest.” Lizzie said. She pulled Christine up and led her up the stairs. Mike rubbed his face before going into the kitchen and shutting the oven off. Christine had just been baking so he cleaned that all up and ordered a couple pizzas, figuring Christine needed a break. He walked upstairs and found Christine in the room she slept in when she didn’t want to be around Mike.
“I ordered a couple pizzas.” Mike said as he sat down next to Christine and touched her shoulder. She was just staring into space. Mike heard Lizzie come in.
“I told you to leave her alone. She doesn’t need you terrorizing her.” Lizzie said.
“I’m not…” Mike said. He was not prepared for Lizzie to punch him in the nose.
“Get out!” Lizzie ordered. Christine had sat up and was looking at Mike in shock.
“Stop! Lizzie; that was uncalled for.” Christine said as she grabbed tissues and pressed them in Mike’s hand. His nose was bleeding pretty heavily. She got up and got a wash cloth and pressed it to Mike’s face.
“He was scaring you.” Lizzie said.
“Go to your room please?” Christine asked. Lizzie stomped off and Christine sat down next to Mike.
“She has a hell of a right hook. I didn’t see that one coming.” Mike admitted. Christine laughed.
“I’ll talk to her. Lizzie thinks she is my protector.” Christine remarked.
“It hurts.” Mike admitted.
“You’ve taken harder hits than anything Lizzie can do.” Christine said.
“It hurt that she did it. She and I used to be so close.” Mike said. Christine nodded and sat down next to Mike.
“Lizzie loves you but she is protective of me. Its because I had to protect her and Hannah so much and now she thinks you might be a threat to my happiness, Now, I know better. I think you are trying to make sure I am making this decision because its right for me. Truthfully, it isn’t right for any of us. You don’t want me to resent you or this baby and that is understandable and you…you want a healthy, happy, loving marriage. Except, the one part of our marriage we both thoroughly enjoyed…the most sacred part, may not happen again.” Christine said.
“It seems really selfish of me.” Mike admitted.
“No, Mike. It is understandable. I hope someday to get that part back too.” Christine said.
“You do?” Mike asked.
“Yes. You and I had something special back then. As far as the baby is concerned; I am sure of this. I love you and I will grow to love that baby because he or she will be part of you. Let me ask, if I had shown up with a child; would you have accepted it? Grown to love the child?” Christine asked.
“Yes.” Mike replied.
“There you have your answer. Alright; you are going to have a black eye. I’ll deal with Lizzie” Christine said as she pulled the wash rag away and winced.
“I am sorry I scared you. I didn’t mean to. You know, I’d never hurt you, right?” Mike asked.
“I do. My response was a trauma response and I will explain that to Lizzie. That was what she was reacting to. Just be patient with her, Mike. She is just so protective of me and right now, she thinks you are the biggest threat to me.” Christine replied.
“Just please tell her that I love her.” Mike said as he stood up.
“I will and I love you, Mike.” Christine said. She kissed his cheek and they went their separate ways. Mike downstairs to get the pizzas and Christine to talk to Lizzie.
It was an extremely quiet dinner but Christine insisted they eat together and made a point to sit next to Mike. After dinner, both girls went upstairs and Mike helped Christine put stuff away before she went upstairs. He was settled in his room when Christine came to the door. She stepped inside and closed the door behind her.
“You didn’t come to my room?” Christine asked.
“I didn’t figure after today and your nightmare last night it was a good idea.” Mike said. Christine took her robe off and went around to the other side of the bed, before climbing in next to Mike.
“Lizzie has to learn she can trust you with me. If you won’t come to me, I’ll just come in here.” Christine replied. Mike noticed her pajama shirt was a little skimpier. Similar to something she would have worn before. It had spaghetti straps and Mike would have normally been turned on, but Christine wasn’t there. He leaned over and gave her a kiss on the forehead and helped her get comfortable.
“My nose hurts.” Mike admitted.
“More than your heart?” Christine asked.
“That is going to take a little longer, I’m afraid.” Mike replied.
“Just keep loving her. She is expecting a reaction from you.” Christine replied. Mike turned and shut the light off before cuddling close to Christine.

Chapter 8
Mike didn’t intend on it but he gave Lizzie a pretty wide berth all week. His eye did black and he came up with a story, not wanting to tell people that his daughter had clocked him. Thankfully, despite several bad dreams, Christine slept next to Mike every night. On Saturday morning, he woke up and smiled. Christine was sound asleep with her head on his chest. It had always been her favorite position before and it felt good to feel that weight. She moved slightly and looked up at him before smiling.
“I didn’t wake up scared.” Christine remarked.
“I’m glad.” Mike said.
“Our anniversary is coming up.” Christine commented.
“It would be our…twenty third?” Mike asked.
“Twenty Second. Remember before we said we would do something special on our twentieth? Back then, I had all kinds of plans for a romantic trip away. Now, I think I would like a family trip…but you only just took vacation.” Christine remarked.
“I’m thinking about retirement but with…everything I can’t right now.” Mike admitted.
“I saw the credit card bill. I know you told her you’d pay for her maternity clothes but that is excessive.” Christine remarked.
“Yeah. I am going to have to set up a budget for it. Apparently she thought designer maternity clothes were appropriate.” Mike said.
“I always just wore sweats, your shirts and I had a couple outfits for when I had to leave home. Pregnancy is not permanent.” Christine replied.
“She sent David an email asking if I would pay for the liposuction after she had the baby.” Mike remarked and Christine laughed.
“I can’t tell you what to do but I would draw the line there.” Christine replied.
“I did.” Mike replied.
“Lizzie said she was hoping that the baby would be a boy. Kind of surprised me.” Christine remarked.
“She seems very uninterested in the baby to me.” Mike said. He and Christine were still laying in bed and she was laying beside him with her head propped on her hand.
“Lizzie loves being a big sister and I promise, when we bring that baby home; she is going to love him or her. She doesn’t love the situation but she’ll love that baby.” Christine said.
“I wish I was so sure.” Mike said.
“I am. Mike, I know she’s giving you nothing but headaches but she is a good girl. She is a good sister and a good daughter.” Christine said.
“Think she’d go out to lunch with me today?” Mike asked.
“I think you should ask her.” Christine replied.
“I am pretty sure she is not interested in a lunch with me.” Mike said.
“You never know. Alright…I will convince her.” Christine said as she got up.
“Don’t force it.” Mike said.
“Nah. I know how to work Lizzie around.” She said. They were making the bed and Christine put her robe on. They both headed downstairs where the girls were sitting at the table, apparently expecting breakfast.
“I suppose this is my hint to make pancakes?” Mike asked and Hannah gave him a huge smile.
“Please.” Lizzie said, much more reserved and less animated then Hannah.
“Alright.” Mike said as he stood up. As he passed by Lizzie, he squeezed her shoulder. She tensed up immediately.
More than anything; Mike hoped for a day when his wife and daughters didn’t tense every time he touched them. A half hour later, he placed a plate of pancakes on the table. Christine carried over bacon and sausage links and they all sit down. Mike did enjoy their Saturday morning breakfasts.
“Lizzie, Dad and you are going to go for lunch. Hannah and I need to pick out some school clothes online.” Christine said.
“I can take you all to a store tomorrow?” Mike suggested.
“No store, please?” Hannah begged quietly.
“I would really like to go to church.” Christine added.
“Church?” Mike choked out. They had never been overly religious. If they thought of it, they might go to a Christmas Eve or Easter service.
“Just a thought I had earlier.” Christine said.
“I wouldn’t mind going to church.” Lizzie remarked.
“There’s one down the road. I can drop you two off and pick you up. Hannah, if you’d like to go that is fine.” Mike said.
“I don’t want to leave the house.” Hannah said. He and Christine exchanged a look. Hannah was fighting leaving the house more and more and Mike wasn’t sure she would handle going back to school well. It worried him.
“We’ll hang out and watch movies. Eat junk food.” Mike said.
“That will be fun!” Hannah said, a bit brighter.
“Alright. It’s settled. Today, Lizzie and your dad will go for lunch and will pick up that junk food and tomorrow; she and I will go to church and you and Dad will hang out at home.” Christine replied.
“Christine; do you want to drive yourself or do you want me to?” Mike asked. Christine had recently gotten her license back but they only had one vehicle. Yet another purchase was looming.
“I’d rather not drive just yet.” Christine replied.
“When can I start driving? It’s time I should.” Lizzie asked.
“Why would you want to?” Hannah asked.
“Hannah, someday you will need to learn too. It doesn’t have to happen immediately but there will be a day. And someday when that happens, you will enjoy the freedom a driver’s license and a car will give you.” Mike told her gently.
“I don’t think so.” Hannah replied, shaking her head violently.
“Mike, easy.” Christine warned gently.
“Sorry, pumpkin. We’ll revisit it at a later point. Lizzie, as soon as I get an extra rig, we will work on driving. Your mom and you might need to share for a bit, though.” Mike said.
“That’s fine.” Lizzie replied.
“Lizzie, I probably won’t use it a lot especially once the baby is here.”
Christine told her.
“We’ll figure out the vehicle issue.” Mike promised. It was just another thing weighing on him. Hannah was of driving age, even if she didn’t want to. Lizzie and Christine were both of age. Three adults and a seventeen year old needed at least three vehicles, if not four. But the budget didn’t meet Mike’s reality. Christine squeezed his hand under the table. He was glad they had spoken about the financial burden Emily was causing.
“It’ll all be alright.” Christine said.
Mike was shocked to not have had any opposition from Lizzie about going for lunch with him and thankfully, while it was a quiet meal, it wasn’t completely unpleasant. Afterwards they picked up all the junk food that Hannah could possibly want. Mike made a last minute decision and pulled into an empty parking lot.
“I don’t think this store is open, Dad?” Lizzie remarked.
“That was why I picked this parking lot. Trade me places.” Mike said as he got out of the vehicle. Lizzie quickly got into the driver’s seat and buckled into her seatbelt. “Alright, it won’t be a full lesson because you aren’t ready to be on the road yet but you can get the feel for it. Now, can you reach the pedals?” Mike asked.
“Not really.” Lizzie said.
“Reach down and there is a bar under the seat. Forward will put you closer to the pedals. We can also adjust the steering wheel.” Mike said, pointing at the lever. Lizzie made the adjustments she needed and looked at Mike.
“What now?” Lizzie asked.
“Alright, turn the key. You will hear the engine start.” Mike instructed. Lizzie immediately complied. “Alright, so the shifter is here. Fortunately, this isn’t a manual. We are in Park right now. Put your foot on the pedal on the left, click this button and move it to D for drive.” Mike explained.
“Okay, now?” Lizzie asked after completing all of her tasks.
“Slowly take your foot off the brake and gently put it on the gas.” Mike said. The truck lurched forward a few times but finally Lizzie got the hang of it. “Alright, now if you want to work on steering, you can drive around in circles, pull into parking spaces, whatever you want.” Mike said.
“What about backing up?” Lizzie asked.
“We’ll do that once you are comfortable with going forward. No need to hurry yourself.” Mike replied. Lizzie drove around the parking lot several times, parking herself, taking off and then finally backing up. She did remarkably well.
“How long until I can drive on the road?” Lizzie asked after they switched spots.
“I need to go to the DMV this week anyway. I will get you a book to study for your permit test. Once you take that, we can start practicing on non-busy roads.” Mike said.
“An ice cream place! There’s still ice cream?” Lizzie asked. Mike made another decision and pulled into the drive through.
“What do you want?” Mike asked, glad he wasn’t so broke that he couldn’t treat Lizzie to ice cream.
“Just a hot fudge sundae. What about Mom and Hannah?” Lizzie asked.
“What would they want?” Mike asked.
“Hannah would love the banana split. Mom used to talk about wishing she could have a Root Beer Float.” Lizzie said. Mike nodded and made the order, including a banana split for himself too.
They got home and ate their ice cream with Christine and Hannah. Lizzie told them all about her driving lesson and their lunch out. Mike was glad she was so much more animated. The girls went upstairs and Mike was washing up dishes when Christine came up from behind and gave him a hug. She had her head leaned into his shoulder blade and he finally turned around and gave her a proper hug.
“I didn’t order Hannah any school supplies or clothes.” Christine said.
“Don’t worry about the money.” Mike replied.
“Its not that. I just think it will be a waste. She is never going to go to school. I think we need to think about home schooling her.” Christine said.
“I am fine with home-schooling but I don’t want her to develop agoraphobia.” Mike answered.
“I thought I had protected them, but I suppose witnessing what they did, changed something in both of them.” Christine remarked.
“We will sort it all out but you did an amazing job with both of them.” Mike said.
“Thank you. And you are doing good with them. I know sometimes Lizzie can be difficult and she makes you want to tear your hair out.” Christine said.
“Today was a good day.” Mike replied before giving her a kiss on the forehead.
“I think so too.” Christine said before giving him a kiss on the lips. It surprised him, but he was happy to oblige. It felt good and surprisingly pure. It gave him hope for a future.

Chapter 9
As time went by, Christine and the girls settled in. Christine began home-schooling both Lizzie and Hannah. She and Lizzie become involved in church. While they were at church, Mike took some one-on-one time with Hannah, often forcing her to leave the house. She was not a fan but Mike was determined that she would somehow overcome some of her fears.
The baby, a boy, was developing as well as possible. Mike suspected that Emily wasn’t doing an exceptional job caring for herself but he was not going to contact her to instruct her otherwise. His attorney put a curb on her expenses, relieving some pressure on Mike. And Christine, determined to help, had started studying for her real-estate agent test.
Things were going as well as Mike could expect for his situation. It was still a fight to get Hannah to go to her therapy but she was making some moves forward. Christine and Lizzie were both doing extremely well. Lizzie had gotten her driver’s license and Christine was excited to be able to work and contribute. And he and Christine were even able to go on a few dates. One day, just as he got home, Christine met him at the door.
“I passed!” She said excitedly.
“Your test?” Mike asked, sometimes slow on the uptake.
“Yes. Now, I just have to find a job!” Christine replied. Mike suspected it wouldn’t so hard for her due to her last name being Slattery.
“I’m sure you will have one in no time. I’m proud of you.” Mike replied, kissing her on the lips.
“Do you think it’ll help?” Christine asked.
“I think it won’t hurt. I am just really proud of you. It’s like you are taking back little pieces of yourself.” Mike replied.
“I’m hoping if the girls see that I am putting one foot in front of the other, they can too. Lizzie does pretty well but I worry about Hannah.” Christine remarked.
“Me too.” Mike agreed.
“I am glad it’s the weekend now.” Christine said as she walked into the kitchen.
“Me too. I am exhausted.” Mike said. He untucked his shirt and smiled as the girls came down the stairs.
“Dad…Mom got blueberries for pancakes tomorrow.” Hannah said.
“Is that a hint?” Mike asked.
“She’s been asking for them all day.” Christine remarked. Mike patted Hannah’s shoulder and smiled at her.
“I think pancakes can be arranged.” Mike said. It seemed to be Hannah’s favorite things.
“She got sausage too. Remember how you used to coat the links in syrup and then cook them?” Lizzie asked.
“Yes, I remember.” Mike said with a smile.
“And I got other fruit…for those of us who like eating healthy.” Christine remarked with a laugh.
“Only you.” Mike teased. Christine had gained weight back but she was still thin. She’d always been petite but in Mike’s opinion, twenty pounds would have helped, but he kept his mouth shut.
“Mom, you’re gonna have to get some different clothes when you get a job. I’ll go shopping with you.” Lizzie offered.
“We’ll cross that bridge when we get there.” Christine said. Lizzie was up for shopping whenever.
“You never offer to go shopping with me?” Mike teased
“It’s boring.” Lizzie replied.
“I’d go shopping with you, Dad.” Hannah said. It surprised Mike and even Christine did a double take.
“We’ll make it a date, sweetie.” Mike said.
“Okay.” Hannah replied. Lizzie winked at her little sister.
“Told you so.” Lizzie said. Mike had to wonder what was going on, but choose to just let the girls have their secrets.
Sunday, after Christine and Lizzie went to church, Mike and Hannah packed up in his truck. He drove to a nearby mall, figuring that was where Hannah wanted to go. She seemed slightly perturbed and confused.
“Where did you want to go?” Mike asked.
“I suppose here would have what I was looking for?” Hannah
said.
“What exactly are you looking for?” Mike asked.
“The baby will be here in two months and you and Mom have nothing for him. No crib or diapers or clothes. I was hoping to go to a baby store and buy him an outfit or two with my allowance. Just because he isn’t really wanted, doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be ready for him or love him.” Hannah said.
“I suppose in admitting we needed to get ready for him, we need to prepare that he is going to exist.” Mike replied, feeling guilty.
“Dad, he’s already existing. He just isn’t here yet. Now…do they have baby clothes here?” Hannah asked.
“Probably, but let’s look at another store first.” Mike replied. He started the truck and headed them to a strip mall that had a baby store. He’d be able to get everything there. “Now, we might not get all the bedding and stuff today. Your mom may want to pick it out.” Mike said.
“Dad, I don’t have money for all that. Just an outfit or so.” Hannah said.
“I’ll get it.” Mike replied. He parked and they both got out. Hannah stayed pretty close to his side while in the parking lot but once they walked into the store, she darted towards a pile of stuffed animals. Mike sent a quick text to Christine explaining what Hannah wanted to do and that he was going to pick up some other things. And asked if there was anything she preferred to get herself. As Mike suspected, Christine wanted to pick out the furniture and bedding. She was fine with Mike and Hannah choosing everything else.
“Dad, aren’t these cute?” Hannah said, picking up a little cow.
“Yeah. Pick out a couple. Mom wants to pick out the furniture and bedding, but is giving us free rein otherwise.” Mike said. Baby shopping was more Christine’s domain but he could manage.
In very little time, the baby would be properly outfitted with enough onesies, sleepers, little pants, bibs, and every other imaginable baby item. After they were done, Mike took Hannah to a nearby restaurant. Hannah had picked out one little outfit and two stuffed animals that she paid for herself and seemed happier.
By time they got home, Hannah was worn out and Christine and Lizzie were already home. She listened to everything Hannah talked about and finally, once Hannah went upstairs, Mike pulled the baby name book out.
“It was an attitude check.” Mike remarked.
“I suppose it was and she’s not wrong. You and I can both say that we’ll love this baby and will take care of him, but will it be the same? I suspect not, judging by the fact that our sixteen year old had to give us, her parents, an attitude check.” Christine remarked.
“Are you still sure you want to do this?” Mike asked.
“Yeah. This baby deserves the life we can give him. If we don’t take him, what could happen? We can’t guarantee that if we don’t take him.” Christine said.
“I do feel really badly.” Mike admitted.
“I do too, but you started righting the wrong. Now, let’s look at names.” Christine replied.
“I love you.” Mike said, giving Christine a kiss. He threw an arm around her and she cuddled close.
“I love you too.” Christine replied. She threw a blanket around them and they began looking through the book.
Two hours later, Mike was exhausted but they had a name picked out. Connor James. It seemed to give the baby an identity, more than just ‘the baby,’ ‘him,’ or ‘he.’ Christine went through the baby clothes and began a list of things that were still needed. And once the girls came downstairs, Lizzie made over several of the little outfits.

Chapter 10
“ I wanted to let you know Emily is in labor. My paralegal is with her and will call me once the baby is born.” David, Mike’s attorney, said. It was two am and Mike was struggling to wake up.
“Should we go to the hospital?” Mike asked. Christine was waking up and she’d turned the light on.
“I know you will miss not being there for the birth of your child but it is better if you aren’t there. Emily will think you are there for her, not the baby.” David replied.
“Copy. Please let me know.” Mike said.
“Will do.” David said before hanging up.
“He wants me to stay out of the hospital until the baby is born. David was afraid Emily will think I’m there for her and not Connor.” Mike explained.
“I know that is hard for you.” Christine said, rubbing his knee.
“He will let me know once Connor is born. We can go then.” Mike said.
“Mike, I have work. A showing at nine, but when I get done I can meet you at the hospital.” Christine said.
“Okay. She may not have even had him by then.” Mike admitted. Christine seemed off but he wasn’t sure he could blame her. She shut the light off and settled back in.
“If you want to get up, I understand. I just need to get a bit more rest.” Christine said. Instead of getting up, Mike wrapped his arms around her and kissed the top of her head.
“I love you.” Mike said.
“I love you too, Mike. Try to get a bit of rest.” Christine replied, giving him a gentle kiss.
Mike didn’t get the call that Connor had arrived until after Christine had left for her showing, so he texted her and let her know, suggesting that they would wait until she could go. It was anti-climatic and not the introduction Mike wanted to his son, but he was concerned about Christine’s reaction. She got home, changed out of her suit and they headed to the hospital, where they were let in and Mike found David’s paralegal, Valerie.
“How’s Connor?” Mike asked.
“He is doing well. Passing all the necessary milestones.” Valerie answered.
“And Emily?” Christine asked.
“She has already signed off her rights and has checked herself out, against medical advice. I made it clear that you were willing to pay until the doctor released her but she refused. The doctor was not happy but it’s all documented. At least she signed off first.” Valerie said as she led Mike and Christine to the nursery where Connor was. They both washed their hands and a nurse brought Connor out.
“He is doing well. He’s ate, slept and had a dirty diaper. Is twenty inches long and weighs eight pounds, two ounces. Who would like to hold him?” The nurse asked.
“I’ll take him.” Christine said. It surprised Mike a bit but Connor was fussing. As soon as he was placed in Christine’s arms, he settled. “He looks like you, Mike.” Christine remarked. The nurse and Valerie had stepped away and Christine had settled in a rocking chair.
“I think he likes you.” Mike remarked, sitting down in an adjacent rocking chair.
“Oh, babies this age are pretty easy to impress.” Christine remarked. She was handed a bottle and began feeding Connor.
“Thank you.” Mike said simply. She smiled at him in response.
“I’m glad he looks like you. It makes it easier.” Christine admitted.
“I still will have his DNA checked. David said he does have my same blood type though.” Mike replied and Christine nodded.
“He’s yours.” Christine replied.
“How…” Mike started. Christine pointed at a spot behind Connor’s left ear.
“You have the same mark, as does Lizzie and Hannah. Lucas did too. And I am sure of their paternity.” Christine said with a smile.
“I never questioned that and I never noticed the mark.” Mike replied.
“Mothers and wives notice things.” Christine remarked. While they talked, she was rocking Connor gently while he took his bottle.
“Are you still sure?” Mike asked quietly.
“I am more sure now than I was before. Here, you hold him and burp him.” Christine replied, laying the baby in his arms. Connor was not thrilled but Mike burped the baby, and then rocked him to sleep.
“He is pretty sweet.” Mike remarked. In his sleep, Connor stretched and gave a slight yawn.
“Oh, I think so.” Christine replied. She stood up and gave Mike a kiss. Usually, she didn’t initiate kisses, especially on the lips, but Mike didn’t mind in the least. Slowly, she was regaining her confidence and that made Mike happy.
After Connor was settled back in his bassinet, Mike gave the nurse his and Christine’s numbers and they left him. He would be ready for pick up the next day. It was odd to both Mike and Christine to leave him but it was part of their situation. The girls were excited when Mike and Christine shared photos of Connor, and couldn’t wait for him to be home with them. Mike was already almost asleep when Christine came in and laid down next to him.
“I called the hospital. Connor is doing good and they will release him about ten or so.” Mike said.
“Good. I’ll be glad to have him here. It was weird leaving him.” Christine admitted.
“Yeah, it was.” Mike agreed. He was surprised when Christine kissed him. It was very passionate, a departure from her usual quick pecks. She continued kissing him. “Christine?” Mike finally asked.
“Please…” Christine asked.
“Are you sure? I don’t want to scare you.” Mike asked.
“I am but can you let me?” Christine replied and Mike nodded. It was slow and lazy, even before Christine unbuttoned her pajama shirt. The remainder of their clothes hit the floor and Mike let Christine take the lead. It was spectacular and afterwards, Mike held Christine, basically on top of him.
“That was amazing.” Mike said, kissing her jaw.
“It was and it felt good too.” Christine remarked. She kissed Mike’s chest and cuddled as close as possible.
“Almost like the first time.” Mike replied.
“Better.” Christine remarked.
“Not that I mind but are you going to fall asleep like this?” Mike asked.
“Undecided. It feels good.” Christine replied.
“It is very distracting.” Mike admitted. Christine laughed and rolled off of him. She cuddled as close as possible. “Do you want me to get your pajamas or a nightgown?” Mike asked.
“Not right now. I kind of like laying skin to skin.” Christine said. Mike turned on his side and pulled her close.
“I hope I didn’t scare you.” Mike remarked.
“No. You were absolutely wonderful. This is something I’ve been wanting to do. Just never worked up the nerve. I am glad I have now. Given that Connor will be in here with us for a while, it might be our last chance for a while.” Christine answered.
“Oh, we always managed when we had a baby with us. Remember Hannah and Lucas were only fourteen months apart?” Mike asked and Christine laughed.
“True.” Christine replied. She gave Mike another kiss and smiled at him.
“I love you.” Mike said.
“I love you too. And thank you, Mike. You were wonderful.” Christine replied. He gave her another kiss and she fell asleep fairly quickly and Mike quickly followed, feeling more peace than Mike felt possible. They just had to get Connor home, Emily out of their lives and for Mike to retire.

Mike smiled as he watched the girls take turns holding Connor. And thankfully, Connor was all about his sisters. He seemed to already light up around them. Not that he didn’t around Mike and Christine. Suddenly, Lizzie gasped.
“Dad, I think he peed! Yuck.” Lizzie said and Mike laughed.
“Yeah, babies do that, Sis. Do you want to learn how to change his diaper?” Mike asked.
“Not on your life.” Lizzie said, handing Connor to Mike like he was a hot potato.
“Alright.” Mike replied. He laid Connor down on the couch and began changing the baby’s diaper.
“Gross, Dad! This is where we sit.” Lizzie lectured.
“We don’t have a changing table yet. Where should we change him? The dining room table?” Mike suggested and Lizzie made a gagging noise.
“Gross, Dad!” Lizzie repeated.
“We’ll get a changing table. But…I should tell you, when you were a baby, your mom and I were really poor. We changed your diaper wherever, and you slept in a playpen until you were two. You turned out pretty well. We have a bassinet for Connor that he will sleep in for a few months. I have a crib bought for him, and will put it together after I get his room painted. Your mom found a dresser she liked and we have a rocking chair. As babies go, he has it pretty good.” Mike said as he rebuttoned Connor’s clean onesie. Connor gave him a happy gurgle.
“Why does his belly button look like that? It’s gross.” Lizzie asked. Mike wondered inwardly how many times she would say ‘gross’ in one conversation.
“They had to cut the umbilical cord. That little bit will fall off in a couple weeks and it’ll heal up in no time. Yours did the same thing.” Mike explained.
“Gross.” Lizzie repeated.
“Having a baby in the house is not all sunshine and roses. You will feel that at about two am when he is keeping the whole house up.” Mike said as he suctioned Connor’s nose for effect.
“Okay, I’m done.” Lizzie said as she ran up the stairs and Mike picked Connor up.
“Don’t worry, you will get to help me do that about five hundred more times before you’re two.” Mike told Connor. Just then, Christine and Hannah came in, after a quick shopping trip. Connor was very picky about bottles, it turned out.
“Where’s Lizzie?” Christine asked suspiciously.
“I grossed her out. I changed Connor’s diaper on the couch and then suctioned his nose.” MIke replied and Christine laughed.
“Mom…how are you going to clip his nails with these?” Hannah asked, pulling out a pair of nail clippers out of the grocery bag.
“Tonight after his bath, I’ll show you. He has some little claws, hence the mitts. So he doesn’t scratch himself.” Christine said, putting the newly purchased mitts on Connor’s hands.
“I can’t believe we both forgot those.” Mike admitted.
“It’s been a few years since we bought things for a baby, and the hospital used to supply more. I don’t think Connor will mind.” Christine replied.
“He’s so cute.” Hannah said.
“Sit down. You can hold him. You won’t have to fight your sister for him, since Connor and I grossed her out.” Mike said. Once seated, he put Connor in Hannah’s arms. Connor let out a soft coo. It made Mike roll his eyes.
“I got a couple frozen pizzas. I’ll cook something tomorrow, I promise.” Christine said. Mike walked up beside her and kissed her cheek.
“You are fine. I can cook too, you know?” Mike said and Christine scrunched up her nose.
“How about grilling something?” Mike suggested and Christine laughed.
“That’s a bit better. You can grill the meat and I can take care of the sides.” Christine replied.
“Thank you.” Mike said, giving her another kiss.
“You’re welcome.” Christine said.
“I love you.” Mike replied.
“I love you too.” Christine said. Mike sat down next to Hannah and smiled at Connor. He was glad that Christine seemed to love the baby as much as she did her own kids. He wasn’t sure what he would have done if Christine couldn’t handle Connor being a part of Mike’s life. Mike would have been a wreck, for sure.

Chapter 12
Connor was three weeks old when Mike put in for his retirement. He had spoken with the President and everything was being fastracked. He was done. It pained him to be away from his family. He’d had a short overnight trip to Norfolk to prepare his predecessor, and he actually handled it worse than Christine and the girls.
Emily had just disappeared. David had made sure she was set up to recover from the birth but she had stopped trying to contact Mike, and more importantly, Christine. And thankfully, Christine had bonded with Connor and the baby had never missed a beat. Mike got home from his trip and found Christine in the kitchen with Connor in on her chest, in the carrier.
“Hey, you’re home. I’m glad.” Christine said, before giving him a long kiss.
“I am too. I may have to go back at some point. It is certainly a process and this guy hasn’t even been confirmed yet.” Mike replied.
“I wish he could just come to St. Louis.” Christine remarked.
“Want me to take him?” Mike asked.
“Yes, I bet Connor would like that.” Christine said. Mike lifted the baby out of the carrier and as soon as he was out, Christine took it off. Connor cooed happily. “He loves being close.” Christine remarked.
“Where are the girls?” Mike asked.
“Upstairs. You should give Connor a couple minutes and then concentrate on them. Lizzie is feeling pinched in. School’s a struggle. She used to be an A student.” Christine explained.
“It has to be hard for them, catching up” Mike said.
“It is but I think having you home will help them both. They love you dearly.” Christine said.
“I’m not much good at the schooling thing. I was not an exemplary student.” Mike admitted.
“You’re a great dad, though and that is what they both need.” Christine said. He’d laid Connor down in his playpen and put his arms around Christine.
“I love you.” Mike said.
“I love you more. So, I was thinking…we could get a babysitter for Connor, someone that would watch over the girls, and take a night away. Maybe coinciding with your retirement party.” Christine replied.
“That would be nice. I can ask around for someone? I know Sasha is rather attached to both the girls and Connor.” Mike said.
“Nice hotel, big bathtub, steak dinner, maybe some red wine…” Christine replied, completely zoning out.
“I can get you the steak dinner and red wine before.” Mike offered and Christine laughed.
“But the hotel room…alone together, you can’t.” Christine replied.
“Ah. I wondered if that was just a one off.” Mike said.
“Oh no. It is definitely something I want to do again. You were amazing.” Christine replied.
“You know, we can do that anytime you want. We don’t need to wait until my retirement dinner.” Mike said.
“Yes, but it is hard with Connor in the bedroom.” Christine replied.
“We can move him to the other room?” Mike offered.
“He is still so little. I wouldn’t feel right.” Christine said. Mike gave her a kiss and smiled as she snuggled close.
That night, Mike walked into their bedroom and smiled at Christine. She was rocking Connor to sleep, wearing a simple cotton nightgown. Before she could lay Connor down, Mike moved the bassinet to the corner of the bedroom, in a little alcove. He’d hung a makeshift curtain over it. She laid Connor down and Mike fixed the curtain.
“He’s still with us, but we have a bit of privacy. We can hear him and get to him if he needs one of us.” Mike explained. Christine smiled in response.
“Are the girls settled?” Christine asked.
“Both sound asleep.” Mike said as he undressed. Christine walked into the bathroom and shut the door. Mike checked on Connor and turned the bed down. Finally, Christine came out, still wearing the same nightgown.
“Sorry, Mike. I don’t have anything else to wear…” Christine said.
“Trust me; you don’t need anything fancier. This does more for me than you could ever imagine.” Mike replied. He gave her a long kiss that quickly became passionate.
“Do the scars bother you?” Christine asked.
“No.” Mike said, kissing her neck. She reached down and grabbed the hem of the nightgown. Once Mike realized, he helped her pull the nightgown off, revealing a pair of lace panties. “Oh, babe.” Mike said.
“Glad you like them.” Christine said. She laid down on the bed and Mike quickly undressed.
“Please tell me if you need me to slow down or stop.” Mike said. Christine nodded and Mike settled next to her. They continued kissing for quite awhile and Christine took the panties off. She lowered herself onto Mike and looked to the little alcove. “He’s alright.” Mike said gently.
“This feels so good.” Christine said. She seemed to remember exactly how to drive Mike nuts, in all the right ways.
“I love you so much.” Mike replied. He raised up and kissed her neck.
“I love you too.” Christine replied. He rolled them over and pushed into Christine again.
“Too much?” Mike asked.
“Please, more.” Christine said and Mike laughed.
‘Yes, ma’am.” Mike replied.
An hour later, Christine laid back down next to Mike and let out an exhausted but content laugh. She gave Mike a long kiss and put a hand on his bare chest. He pulled the blanket back over them and pulled her closer.
“That was absolutely amazing. The best.” Christine remarked.
“It was really great.” Mike said.
“I feel like every time we do this, I take a little part of myself back.” Christine remarked.
“Good. We can do this as often as you’d like.” Mike said.
“Truthfully, I feel like some sort of hormonal teenager.” Christine said with a laugh.
“I am happy to oblige whenever you feel like it.” Mike replied.
“I really do love you, you know? More than you know.” Christine said.
“Not half as much as I do.” Mike said, giving her a gentle kiss.
“I would love to continue this but I figure Connor is going to wake up. He was out when I checked on him. That little alcove is perfect for him.” Christine remarked.
“Maybe he will sleep through the night?” Mike suggested. In his sleep, Connor cooed.
“That would be too much to hope for.” Christine replied. She gave Mike another kiss.
“Get some rest.” Mike said.
“You too.” Christine replied. She quickly fell asleep and Mike began making plans for their night away. He would have to make sure he had someone to babysit first and foremost. The hotel room, dinner and so forth would be easy to plan.

Chapter 13
As promised, Mike got a babysitter for the girls and Connor, as well as a hotel room for him and Christine. It was close in case Christine felt that she needed to go home. Mike had decided to do their night away sooner than planned because it was taking a while for his retirement to go through and Christine seemed impatient.
The hotel was nice and after their dinner, he found Christine soaking in the bathtub. Something she didn’t get to do at home often. She smiled at him and Mike stood at the doorway. “This is a big bathtub, Mike. I’d love for you to join me.” Christine said.
“You sure? It might not be so comfortable.” Mike asked.
“I am sure.” Christine replied. Mike undressed and carefully got in behind Christine. He was not a fan of baths but he could see why Christine enjoyed them. He began massaging her back, ignoring the scars.
“Am I going to smell like lavender?” Mike asked.
“Possibly. I don’t have any sandalwood bubble bath.” Christine answered with a laugh.
“Don’t buy any on my account.” Mike said.
“Dinner was really nice. And the hotel is amazing. Thank you.” Christine said.
“I think we can do this more often.” Mike replied, kissing her shoulder.
“Its really nice but it is hard leaving the girls and Connor. Especially Connor.” Christine said.
“If you feel like we should go home…?” Mike started.
“Absolutely not. We need to do this.” Christine replied. She turned
around and gave Mike a long kiss on the lips.
“I love you.” Mike said.
“I love you too.” Christine replied.
They continued kissing for a while, until the water got cold. It was nice to take their time and not be worried about Connor waking up. They took their time and it felt amazing. It was hardly their first time, but it feel like it. As they laid in bed, waiting to go to sleep, Christine cuddled as close as possible.
“You spoil me, you know?” Christine said and Mike chuckled.
“You are well on your way to being a very successful real-estate agent. You hardly need me to spoil you.” Mike said.
“Well, you believe in me. I wouldn’t be here right now if it wasn’t for you.” Christine said.
“I would hope not.” Mike teased and Christine laughed.
“You’re funny.” Christine replied.
“So, once I retire; what will I do with all my time?” Mike asked.
“I am sure Connor will claim the majority of your time.” Christine said.
“So…I was thinking; even with the kids, I am going to be bored out of my mind. I need a hobby.” Mike said.
“Hunting, fishing…” Christine started.
“I could learn how to sell real-estate.” Mike said and Christine started laughing.
“Not sure that is a good idea. What about going back into law enforcement part time?” Christine suggested.
“I don’t think anyone would hire someone my age.” Mike remarked.
“You had ten years experience in one of the most violent cities in America. You are Admiral of the Fleet. I don’t think it’ll be as hard as you think.” Christine said.
“Hard to say. I’m not sure I would want to be a cop again.” Mike admitted.
“How about for the first little while; you just concentrate on being a husband and dad? The girls are really looking forward to having you around full-time. Lizzie told me the other day that she really loves when you run with her. I think it is one of her favorite things to do.” Christine replied.
“I enjoy it too.” Mike admitted.
Six Months Later
Mike’s retirement finally went through, but he still hadn’t found a hobby. He was enjoying all the time with the girls, Christine and Connor. One sad note was that Mike had received word that Emily had been killed in a car accident. Mike had contacted her family, a cousin, but they had no interest in Connor. Not that Christine would ever admit it, but it was a relief.
Mike and Christine’s marriage had never been stronger. Lizzie was doing well and adjusting. Hannah still struggled at times, but she doted on Connor and he had a way of helping her when no one else could. It was not perfect and they still had growing pains. Just like any other family.
