Red Clover of Schale

Summary:

“Why do you want to throw yourself into danger again, for strangers like me no less?” Ushio Noa asked him.

What is a Reploid like him, whose life so full of tragedy, can do in a land of miracles and innocence? He who is supposed to lose his life in the final battle against an age old enemy now finds himself alive once again in another situation.

But seeing the curious and hopeful eye of children, his answer is simple.

"To fight for the things you believe in, and to teach those who wants to reach the end they believe in."

“Is this recording?” A girl's voice, but the audio quality was heavily damaged causing cracklings. In the background, the sound of a train rattled, filling the empty noise.

“Oh good, I guess it's recording now.”

Playing: Ao Haru

A sigh.

“It was all my fault.” She started in a somber tone.

“My decisions, and everything they caused.”

She took a deep breath then continued.

“It had come to this for me to finally realise that you were right all along…”

Clothes shifting was heard.

“So forgive me for being so bold, but I must ask for your help.”

“You might forget these words… Or not, I'm not sure how it'll affect a Re████. But it doesn't matter.”

“Because I know even without memories, you'll still fight for those who believe in you and you in them. Not that it's your first time losing your memories.”

A soft giggle left from the girl, she sounded like she was remembering something amazing.

“Therefore, I believe what matters is not memories that define us, but the choices we made.”

A pause, a breather. Then she continued in a morose tone.

“I’ve spoken of responsibility before.”

“I didn’t truly understand it then, but now I think I do.”

“Adulthood, responsibility, obligation… and the necessary choices you make that extend beyond those ideals.”

“I even understand their implications.”

“Therefore… you’re the only one I can trust to fight our battles.”

“Only you, the Hero, can save us from this twisted, distorted fate…”

Her voice cracked slightly, her resolve hardened but her heart broke.

“So… Please help us again…”

In 20xx, from the land of technological titans, a Meister named Shiraishi Utaha was packing up for the day. Another day at attempting to create a new machine went well and minimal progress was made.

“Have you finished packing up for the day?” She asked her fellow clubmates, Nekozuka Hibiki and Toyomi Kotori, who stood near the exit.

“Yes, senpai.” Both of them answered while Utaha joined her underclass girls before switching off the light for their warehouse.

“Huh?”

The room still looked bright for some reason. The girls looked at each other with confused expressions and flipped the switch again.

The light turned on.

Again.

The light turned off.

But the room still looked bright.

“This is… Odd.” Hibiki muttered and analyzed the room. The engineer club always ensured the electricals of their building were in top shape, even making some upgrades too.

“Perhaps it’s not the wiring that is the problem, but our environment?” Kotori proposed. “There are many factors we can consider like the time of day, external accidents and…”

She trailed off, face paler as she stared up. The ground shook slightly, not enough to imbalance them but was concerning.

“Kotori?”

Utaha and Hibiki looked up and their faces paled when they realized what was happening.

Through the window roof, a massive fireball rapidly descended upon them. The window was cracking from the intensity of the head; The quaking increased in frequency which caused them to wobble on their feet.

Play: OST 203 Realm Rumble

“Bunkers, now!” Utaha ordered.

“Which ones?!” Kotori frantically looked around, hopping on her feet.

“The lockers are near-by, we can use it.” Hibiki pointed at three empty lockers without any air vents and ran for it with her friends.

All of them entered at the same time before engaging its lock system. The small space became smaller when air bags softly squished against their bodies.

(Right… it was supposed to be scrapped because of possible claustrophobia.)

The claustrophobic room and the constant shaking made the tense situation more nauseating. Utaha’s heartbeat quickened as time went by; She could even hear Hibiki start to sob on her left.

“With the amount of time and the possible speed in which the falling satellite is coming down, I think we can overshoot the possible time it reaches impact. But then again, we couldn’t judge the time because we don’t know the distance and the speed it was falling from. But assuming-”

“KOTORI JUST PLEASE SHUT UP!” Hibiki cried out and her sobbing became louder. “I want it to be over already.”

“Hold a little longer, Hibiki.” Utaha managed to keep her voice steady despite her fear. “It’ll be over soon. Be brave longer.”

Hibiki’s sobbing has reduced to whimpering; The shaking continued a bit longer until a deafening blast punched their eardrums and they could feel their room rocked around harshly.

Thankfully, the cushion helped to mitigate the amount of G force they were experiencing. The Meister gritted her teeth and shut her eyes tightly, praying it will be over soon. Despite the ringing, she could hear Hibiki and Kotori screaming her lungs out.

A few seconds passed and their world stopped moving. None dared to move for a moment until the tinnitus went away. Utaha had to blink her eyes a few times to get the black spots to recede before her hands searched for the disengage button.

End

“Uh, can anyone hear me?”

“Y-yeah? Barely but I can try.” Kotori spoke up in a hoarse voice.

“Where’s the disengage button?”

She could hear some movement to her right before a loud metal pop was heard.

“Around 66.99 degrees away from the door and 15 cm deep. The cushion might have thickened it though.”

“Nice.” Utaha muttered and quickly found the button to press it. The exit flew open like a jet while the cushion deflated itself. She climbed out and stared at the fallout.

The warehouse that was once pristine looking was a wreckage beyond comprehension. Melted metal protrude from the ground, some plates flew beyond the horizon or reduced to atoms. Plume of smoke floated into the dusk sky, blanketing the place into deeper darkness.

The door to her left opened and Hibiki shakily climbed out, looking at the aftermath with a shocked expression.

“We’re almost dead…” Hibiki trembled, tears forming from the corner of her eyes.

“We’re still alive.” Utaha took Hibiki’s trembling hand with her own. “That’s what counts.” She spoke more for herself than anyone else, but Hibiki nodded nonetheless.

“Let’s take a look at what just fell down. Could be a satellite or an asteroid or something else.”

Following Kotori’s suggestion, they walked towards the crater. It wasn’t a long walk, but between shaky legs and the heavy smell of ashes, they wanted to pace themselves.

When they reached the epicenter, Utaha audibly gasped at the sight.

“That’s…” Utaha started.

“... Not…” Kotori continued.

“... a satellite.” Hibiki finished.

In the epicenter of such destruction, was a heavily damaged body. Most of the body was singed, especially the red parts on the right side of the body.

The left leg and part of the face, whoever, suffered the most as they were melted. Strangely, however, the blond hair still looked pristine as if nothing had touched it.

“That’s a robot.”

OST 221. U mak3 m3 smil3

Hayase Yuuka, accountant of Seminar and (allegedly) Demon King, now faces yet another financial investment to approve.

For the past week, Millennium was experiencing an upheaval unlike anything before.

A red robot fell from the sky and crash landed into the now ruined Engineer Club warehouse (now dubbed the Red Comet accident) and with it, brought a mini robotics revolution.

Tsukatsuki Rio, the Big Sister of Millenium, was literally obsessed with it. She had poured even her own savings into researching the foreign robot and its technology. Where did the money come from, Yuuka doesn't want to question it.

But Yuuka does want to question whether it was worth it or an over investment. So far, it was leaning to the former with all the discoveries made from it.

From the reports made, the body was made out of a titanium alloy that barely managed to survive atmospheric entry not unlike the most expensive human made metal, Wolfsegg Titanium B-A.

But the greatest discovery was the internals of the robot. Artificial muscle, complex wiring, but most of all…

An actual living mind inside the hard drive that they managed to retrieve. A disk that held at least a few hundred yottabytes of information was the biggest marvel for everyone in Millennium.

Yuuka still remembered the shock she experienced when Utaha managed to translate what that amount of information was when compared to a human mind.

“At least a century of life, without being deleted, was stuffed into his brain. Add in the amount of memory to run the OS for absolute freewill, yottabytes is close to enough to run him without any compromise. The Red Comet has lived longer than some of the artifacts we found in the Millennium Ruin.”

And that was the biggest thing Rio wished to crack the secret of. A hard disk capable of holding yottabytes was something even the greatest scientist struggled to achieve in this day and age.

But as of now, there were three things Rio wished to achieve alongside producing a yottabyte hard disk.

First, fix or replace the ruined body of the Red Comet. As of now, it was agreed that the Engineer Club would put all their efforts into finding out which was more efficient and what material was needed to create replacement parts that were closest to his original body.

Second, research and understand the weapons that were brought along with the Red Comet. Another task that was delegated to the Engineer Club but was on the lower priority list.

Finally, to see whether the memories of the robot can be accessed. This was delegated to Veritas due to their programming expertise. But this came with an issue that everyone should’ve seen coming.

“The ‘person’ in the brain is not making things easy for us. Every firewall that we tried to crack will always result in our pc crashing. Sorry, but this might take a very long time to crack.” And that was what Kagami Chihiro reported to Seminar two days ago.

Yuuka sighed and rubbed the bridge of her nose. “All these for some stupid robot…”

“I think it’s more impressive than stupid, Yuuka.”

She turned to the source of the voice and gave an unimpressive look to her. “Well, all it does is just add more work for all of us, Noa.”

Ushio Noa, Yuuka’s best friend, sat beside her with a wide smile. “But think about it! All the discoveries we made will change so many things for Kivotos, especially for automaton technology. The robot citizens we have are very close to sentience but imagine we finally crack what made him have true free will! Every robot man and woman and children can make their own decision, away from what was their intended purposes.”

“Which is a problem in itself.” Yuuka countered. “We have a few robots who went Deviant because of their cult, Decagrammaton, already and caused quite a few trouble. Imagine we made an entire populace with people who can choose to go Deviant because of free will.”

“Maybe.” Noa nodded, maintaining her smile. “But I want to be optimistic and say they will be born with good hearts just like us humans. They will choose good over evil because it is natural to do so.”

Yuuka sighed and turned to her work. “You and your optimism… but I’ll trust you on that.”

The accountant yelped when her friend hugged her and squished their cheeks together. “I know you would trust me on that.”

“Stop! I’m working here Noa!”

Their play fighting stopped when Yuuka’s phone rang, showing the caller to be Chihiro. Noa immediately released Yuuka as she answered the call, putting it on loudspeaker.

Play: OST 03 Mischievous Step

Immediately they winced when they heard someone screaming and sobbing in the background despite being muffled.

“Hello Chihiro. Any… news?”

“Good afternoon, Yuuka. We got something to report and… yeah you wouldn’t like it.”

“Just say it.” She sighed and prepared herself for the bad news.

“The Red Comet directly responded to us minutes ago.”

Yuuka and Noa had the same confused expression before the former responded. “What… Do you mean by that?”

“He counter hacked us and told us, in his words, ‘Please stop attempting to crack the hard disk and put it back to the body. Any more attempt will result in your entire connected database to be erased. This is your only warning.’ After that, he proceeded to wipe everything in Maki’s pc, including System 32 and the console.”

Yuuka slumped to the back and processed the new information given. Despite the poor state of the Red Comet, it is still capable of responding to third parties and making counters. Maybe the firewalls and crashing should’ve been the warning sign that they should stop.

“Alright, I’ll report this to Seminar later. I’ll also get them to compensate for whatever was lost.”

“MY BEAUTIFUL ART AND DOUJINS!!!” Maki’s shout from the background before her loud sobbing continued.

“... I’ll talk to her. Just.. do what you need to do. See you soon.” With that, Chihiro ended the call and the room went silent.

“... See. More trouble than impressive.”

A few more days passed by with more progress done in their primary objective, which was to repair the body of the Red Comet.

After receiving the report from Veritas, Rio had promptly abandoned the project of making a yottabyte hard disk and discovering the OS running the robot and delegating whatever amount she invested into the Engineering Club’s task.

By now, the robot was close to completely repaired, with the head being the hardest due to the complex artificial muscles it has. It was to the point that Yuuka had to send in the Human Anatomy Club to collaborate with the Engineers to make an accurate facial muscle to complete it.

As of now, Yuuka and Noa were walking down the pristine hall of Millennium to the new warehouse that was given to Utaha and her friends to check on the progress and report it to Seminar.

“Yuuka, have you heard?”

“Heard what?”

“That things aren’t going well in D.U. The rising crime rates over there and the possibility of the GSC President being missing.”

“Yeah, even the conspiracy theorist forums are talking about what is going on in the GSC.”

It was the hot topic that was circulating right now to the point it made news in Kronos Channel. Yuuka wasn’t immediately concerned about it right now, far too busy at doing Rio’s tasks to pay any mind.

But now that Noa mentioned it to her, the situation felt concerning.

It was like an insidious darkness, slowly creeping into Kivotos; The darkness wished to devour their precious home and sow untold chaos to hurt them, the children of Kivotos.

“... I have a bad feeling about it.” Noa, who rarely frowned, spoke in concern. “Some of our requests to GSC aren’t going through these days and… all of these rising issues aren’t making things easy.”

Yuuka nodded solemnly. “Agreed, I think we should make this a concern for Seminar. Something just doesn’t feel right.”

They reached the warehouse in time to see the Engineer Club’s Meister and her friends carefully insert the robot’s head into the neck with a click. Hibiki quickly took out an electronic screwdriver and screwed some loose screws shut.

They wiggled the head and neck for a bit, testing out the flexibility before they sighed in relief.

“Well, I guess we pretty much got it done.” Utaha patted the ‘sleeping’ robot with a tired smile. “All we need to do is put the hard disk back in and charge him up.”

“I’ll go get the EV charger at the back of the storage bay. I’ll be back!” Kotori dashed away in a cloud of dust as if all exhaustion had left.

Utaha could only chuckle before noticing the Seminar members. “Oh hey, didn’t see you girls there.”

“It’s okay, we’re happy you managed to finish repairing him.” Noa walked up to the robot and surveyed the body. “Without the bolts and black body, he kind of looks like a very handsome adult.”

Yuuka’s face turned red upon hearing her friend’s words. “W-what are you talking about Noa?!”

“Can you deny it? He has fabulous hair-” Her hand reached out to the hair before Hibiki quickly grabbed it.

“Don’t. Apparently it can give you paper cuts.”

Looking at Hibiki’s fingers, there were at least a few bandaids plastered on it.

Noa winced and nodded. “Anyways, his face is good looking and his body is quite a looker.”

“He’s a robot!”

“Mechanophilia is not a crime.” Utaha immediately defended. “You should be thankful we decided not to add anything into him, because Kotori suggested to add a pe-”

“Nope!” Yuuka quickly closed her ears and shook her head vigorously. “Not hearing it! Move on!”

Everyone giggled at Yuuka’s reaction before Utaha continued to report the progress. “As you probably heard just now, we just have to put the hard disk back into his head and then charge him up before activating him. It’ll take about a full day to reach it even with our highest volt EV chargers.”

“Does he need that much voltage to charge up?”

“Yes…” Utaha nodded before walking to one of the tables, showing a schematics of the robot. “Whatever is powering him was made out of a highly conductive material that can produce energy without any waste. Literally none.”

“That’s…”

“Something out of science fiction right?” Utaha she shrugged and grinned. “Cause I thought so too. It’s gonna change everything, this energy. The new projects we can make are now sky high.”

Yuuka could feel the future headache she will experience just from hearing the engineer’s giddy voice and Hibiki’s tail wagging rapidly. “Putting it aside for now. When and where do you want to activate him?”

“That’s up to you.”

“Alright, I’ll talk to Rio about it and arrange for a time.”

Yuuka and Noa’s phone rang at the same time, the caller was another Seminar member who reported to them. They excused themselves before leaving the warehouse, concern on their faces. They split into their own corners before picking up their call.

“This is Hayase Yuuka speaking.”

“H-Hayase Senpai, the air turbines stopped working and GSC isn’t responding at all!”

Yuuka could feel her blood go cold for one second… then boiled the very next.

End

Deep blue eyes fluttered, then glowed when his vision was cleared. Zero quickly surveyed his new, clean surroundings and assessed the situation.

He was falling down from the atmosphere, reaching terminal velocity as his body melted. His consciousness eventually ceased at some point.

But now he was booted up once more, it was safe to assume he survived the fall and repaired with new parts. He was surrounded by teenage girls, all of them sporting halos of differing designs and open carrying firearms.

“He’s alive!” One of them celebrated and many others cheered with her. “Oh my goodness we revived a super robot!”

He looked around and found himself a little confused. These girls seemed to not recognize him at all like those back in Resistance. Them calling him a robot instead of Reploid was another clue to a working theory inside his head.

Once is a happenstance, twice is a coincidence…

(Let’s see if there is a trice.)

“Where am I?” The room became silent the moment he spoke. All the girls were uncomfortable for a moment, until one of them walked up to him.

“You are in Millennium Science School, sir. I am Ushio Noa, the Secretary of Seminar, the de facto leader of Millennium.” The white haired girl introduced herself with a practiced smile. “But I’m afraid that is not the answer you’re looking for.”

“No. Which country or what time period am I in?”

The room was filled with murmurs, all concerning his question and how odd it was.

“You are in the Academy City, Kivotos in the year 20XX. This city is a supercontinent filled with thousands of schools, all ruled by their own student councils. You could say this country is ruled by students.”

Zero was silent for a bit before a sigh left him.

“I see. I understand now.”

He tried to stand up, only to be stopped by another student with orange hair and glasses who pulled his shoulder.

“Wait wait wait! Let me plug the EV charger out from your back first before you start moving.”

“EV charger?” Zero turned his head around and found a long and thick black cord connected to a generator that was still running. He could feel something unplugged from his back before a plate sealed his charging port shut.

“Yep. We found out that your charging port has the same shape as an EV charger and we applied a 200 Volt charger for you. You’re supposed to be fully charged hours ago but… our wind turbine stopped working yesterday and we have to make do with our 500 Volt generator. In case you’re wondering how we managed to do that, we should first start with- W-wait. Why are you girls pulling me away? Hey!”

Zero watched as two other girls pulled the girl who was struggling to be released from her captors.

“Sorry about Kotori. She talks a lot once she gets excited.” Noa gave an apologetic smile, which Zero responded with a nod and stood up.

“Why did you activate me again?”

A purple haired girl walked up to him with a glint in her eyes. “That was because you were badly damaged and you’re a technological marvel that we have to understand. Oh right, I’m Shiraishi Utaha by the way.”

“Is there no war for me to fight?”

Utaha and Noa were stunned for a moment and glanced at each other before looking at Zero. “W-war?”

Zero nodded without any hesitation. “What about the Ragnarok? Did it crash land somewhere?”

“Nothing aside from your damaged body crash landed in Millennium. You were the only satellite that crashed last week.”

Zero took a moment to process the new information, silent for a while before nodding. “I understand now.”

“You’re… pretty calm for someone who just woke up from fighting a war and nearly died.” Noa spoke with clear concern in her eyes.

“It was another day of my life. Where, when, and what doesn’t matter.”

Noa gave him a wry smile before extending her hand. “Well, if you say so sir… actually, may we have your name?”

Zero shook her hand gently, expression still unchanging. “S-Class Maverick Hunter, Zero.”

“Then I welcome you to Kivotos, Zero-san.”

End

Play: Mega Man Zero OST - Intermission (Remastered)

Zero followed Noa silently through the white hall of Millennium, ignoring the stares and murmurs surrounding them.

He would occasionally take a glance at the new surroundings and couldn’t help but be fascinated over and again.

Millennium was like how Abel City was before the Day of Sigma, before war ravaged the city to the ground. Humans walked around with careless smiles, worrying about their mundane duties and other concerns in their life.

A peaceful, happy world. A true Arcadia.

“Is there something interesting that caught your eyes, Zero-san?” Noa stopped and turned to him.

“... No. Just reminiscing.”

“Was your world like ours before your war?”

He was quiet for a moment, making Noa feel a bit nervous before he spoke again. “Close, especially during its peak.”

“Then I hope you can acclimate to Kivotos soon.”

They continued their touring, passing by other clubs that specialized in their own branch of research and occasionally stopped when Noa was busy speaking to some students.

When they passed by the cafeteria, the television caught Zero’s eyes and he stopped.

The scene that was shown was a group of teenage police officers, all girls, engaged in a skirmish with another group with varied clothings. At the corner was a girl wearing an office suit and holding a mic reporting the news.

“If you can see this, right now the Valkyries are even struggling against some delinquents and there seems to be unless amount of the latter. The crime rate in the D.U is rapidly rising and Valkyrie is struggling to keep up.”

The reporter continued, but Zero stopped listening as he watched some of the girls get shot and slumped down on the floor. No pool of blood nor any gory detail was visible at all.

It was like they merely went unconscious.

“Zero-san?” Noa called him before noticing what he was watching. “Ah… the news… I supposed this was a bad way to show you some of the troubles in Kivotos.”

He didn’t turn to the girl, but still asked her another question. “Is open carrying and fire fights an acceptable culture in Kivotos?”

“Yes. You could say not having a firearm is just as bad as running around as a nudist.”

“How did all of you keep the mortality rate low?”

“Some say it is our Halo, but I buy into the theory that we are simply born this way.” This time, Zero did turn to her and looked at the halo on top of her head. “The former theory says that it protects us from the worst effects of bullets. At most, a JHP round will only give us bad bruises. The latter, on the other hand, says it is due to the environment that we have bullet resistance.”

Something went through Zero’s mind once again, putting their conversation to a dead end. He watched the skirmish continue as the reporter continued to narrate the battle, occasionally running to a cover to protect herself.

A decision came to him right there and then.

“How far is the D.U?”

“Huh?”

“How far is the D.U?” Zero repeated the question.

“W-wait. Zero-san, are you going there? You may be a robot, durable, and have fought a war but is it smart to go back to another battlefield just when you got repaired?”

“Yes.” He said firmly, with no room for argument.

Noa gaped like a fish, dumb founded by the firm answer before she took a deep breath. Her professional smile returned to her before she turned away from Zero.

“Follow me, I’ll give you the vehicle to get there.”

Play: Mega Man Zero OST - Resistance (Frozenith Remix)

Noa and Zero passed by some of the vehicle engineers and walked together with purpose. Many stopped their activity and watched the pair walking straight to a particular vehicle.

A red, lightly modified CBR650R motorbike sat there with four large exhaust pipes protruding at the back. The speedometer was replaced with a small screen and the ignition switch was replaced with a button instead.

“CBR650 E-Kai.” Noa introduced. “A heavily modified version of the original CBR650R with a top speed of 500 MPH while keeping it environmentally friendly. It was meant to be used by Kivotos’s Special Response Team, or SRT, in case of an emergency.”

Zero analysed the bike before turning to her. “But the G-force exerted is too much for humans.”

“Yes. It was deemed an utter failure until a solution can be made to deal with the G-force.”

“Until I came in.” He mounted on the bike and touched the handles, flexing his fingers on the brake and brushed the ignition button.

“I believe your body is capable of using this ‘monster vehicle’ to its full potential.” She turned to one of the engineers and called them over. “Please get a helmet for Zero-san. I believe today we are going to see another momentous occasion in Millenium.”

“A helmet?” Zero asked.

“Traffic safety still applies to robots, Zero-san.”

He touched his head and realized that, this whole time, his helmet was not on his head. “Did no one recover my helmet?”

“There was no helmet at the crash site.”

He nodded before starting the ignition of the bike. It roared its engine like a dragon, vibrating the very room they were in and the exhaust pipe shook.

The screen lit up, showing various options and Noa tapped the GPS feature.

“I'm setting the destination to be the General Student Council building. Look for either the President or the Vice-president and they'll give you an idea what to do.”

Zero nodded before looking intently at his motorbike.

“I’m calling this Z-Dragon.”

Noa chuckled before quickly stopping herself, blushing up a storm at the embarrassing display. “S-sorry. I just got caught off guard.”

“If you want to know, I named my weapons Z- Saber, Z- Buster, and more.”

“So many Zs, are you secretly a narcissist Zero-san?”

“No, I thought it was cool at that time.”

This time, Noa did laugh till she went red. “Y-you’re a robot, sir. Not a child!”

(Tell that to X and his naming convention.) Zero’s lips slightly curled upward, joining Noa’s amusement of the small banter.

When the engineer came with a red helmet, she was confused at the sight but still gave Zero the helmet. He gave it a look around and was ready to put it on.

“Before you go, can you humor me with one more question?”

End

Zero gave her a nod.

“Why do you want to throw yourself into danger again, for strangers like me no less?”

Her heart beats against her chest for some reason, anxiously waiting for his answer.

“Because…”

“My power is not to destroy,

but to protect the beautiful things my friends and I believe in.”

Play: OST 32 GGF

Noa stared at him, her heart burst with complicated feelings as he put the helmet on. Slowly, she can feel her lips curled up into a big smile.

“Then I will believe you, Zero.”

He paused then turned to her, staring at her for a moment.

“Then believe in me.”

With those final words, she took a few steps back and Zero revved up the Z-Dragon before rocketing off into the horizon.
