Work Text:

It's early, incredibly so. But early mornings were not new to either of them. And it is always worth it, as they hopped on the metro, baby and stroller ready.

Carter picked up a sock that fell off one of his son's feet, and he chuckled. Kem laughed, sitting the one year old on her lap, as Carter fixed the sock back on.

"Good thing I carry extras." Carter said, shrugging the backpack on his shoulder before sitting across from them.

Kem picked up Joshua, in his little jeans and green t shirt. She brushed Joshua's curly hair, kissing the back of his head.

Joshua was a giggly one year old now, and it was his birthday. Kem giggled, placing her hands over his face like she used to do with John. Carter can't help but snap a quick picture before the train leaves the tunnel to reveal the sunrise over Paris, the Eiffel tower in the full view.

“Look Joshua!” Kem gasped, standing him up on her lap. She removed her hands from his face and he shrieked in delight, clapping his hands.

Carter chuckles watching as his little eyes light up at the sight. He probably has no clue what the Eiffel tower is, but he loves big buildings and structures.

To think, a year ago, they were worried, constantly in the hospital after he was born a month early. A month of recovering from the birth for Kem, the depression and guilt she felt, Carter's own guilt as he kept vigilance over Joshua's incubator.

But it made them realise too that they were stronger when they relied on each other. Their reliance on one another, however, revealed a strength they hadn't known they possessed. Leaving Chicago was difficult, but Carter wouldn't trade it for anything, especially not Parisian mornings with his wife and son.

Stepping off the train, they headed to Île Saint-Louis, picking up pastries at a bakery before settling in the park.  As the day unfolded, they watched families, joggers, and buskers. Carter settled Joshua on his lap, feeding him the apricots Kem had packed.

Kem diligently snapped photos to add to their growing family album.

"Tu en veux?" Carter asked Joshua, who nodded enthusiastically, opening his mouth for another apricot which he ate enthusiastically, his dad feeding him. Kem smiled, capturing the moment with a quick photo before taking a sip of her tea. "My boys," she murmured adoringly.

Carter smiled at her. "Are you happy?" he asked.

"Very," Kem confirmed, as he leaned in for a kiss.

Joshua, wanting kisses too, landed a sloppy one on her cheek, making her laugh.  Then, Kem's expression changed.

"I have something to tell you," she said. Carter looked at her, confused.  "I'm pregnant," she announced.

Carter's eyes darted from her face to her stomach as he waited for his reaction.  He grinned, laughing, "Holy—Kem, honey, are you sure?"

Kem nodded. "I fibbed about having a class last week. I went to the doctor. I'm ten weeks along. I didn't want to say anything until I was sure."

Carter leaned in for a firm kiss. "I'm so happy. We'll have the baby here, or in London, or wherever!" he exclaimed, his enthusiasm evident. He gently tickled Joshua. "You hear that? You're going to be a big brother."

Kem laughed, taking his free hand. "I'm so happy you're happy. I know it's a lot, but I think we can do this," she said, adding softly, "I want to. I mean, I'm terrified."

Carter nodded understandingly. "You don't have to be, honey. We're in this together," he reassured her.

 "Together.”
