“Max.” Standing in front of George, the Dutchman stood there all in his shameful glory. The man George once held so close to his heart was only a doorway away, keeping them inches apart.

“George.” The man voiced out, eyes locked onto his, a look that could kill.

Breaking their silence, the sound of footsteps grew closer to them. A teenage boy with remarkably curly brown hair descended from the second floor, his voice—a high-pitched tone—piercing through the quiet air. “Papa!”

With a quiet huff, George moved to the side, no longer blocking the doorway and the view of his son’s other father. Despite the hatred that flowed through both men, they swiftly put on a facade, making it seem like nothing had happened seconds beforehand. A bright smile grew on George’s face, quickly shifting the mood. The boy ran down toward his father, moving past George as if it were nothing, to give the other man a tight hug, dropping his bags.

Max’s thin-lipped grimace switched to a wide smile immediately when Kimi’s embrace hit him. It was clear he enjoyed these small moments with his son, especially since he doesn’t get to see him as often as he wanted to. The man wouldn’t admit it, but he missed the times when he could see his son every day, not only just on the weekends, like how it was now. The same schedule every week. Monday through Thursday with George—and of course, the shortest amount, Friday through Sunday, scheduled for him.

“Hé, kleintje.” Max spoke out into the hug, Kimi breaking it a second later, his usual grin plastered on his boyish face. “I didn’t forget my phone this time, it's in my pocket.”

George glared at Max from an angle, hoping the other man would take it as a sign to wrap it up.

Sighing, Max would give Kimi a slap or two on the shoulder, another small smile displaying on his face. “Get your bags and go wait for me in the car, okay? I need to talk to your dad for a second.” His eyes would lock onto Kimi’s for a moment before moving them toward George, who stood in the back, his own eyes glued onto him like a vice.

As the teenager moved on with his bags and toward Max’s car, George would speak up. “You better keep your fucking eye on him, Verstappen.” Max would scoff, taking it like it was some joke that George wasn’t in on. “Relax, George. He’ll be fine.” He’d take a step into their home, scratch that, George’s home. It was an odd thought they used to call it their home, that they used to share it as a couple, but now it’s just an old memory of what they used to have.

“When did I say you could come in?” The British man snapped, his eyes slightly squinting. Max would playfully scoff again, stopping only a step into the residence. “Last time I checked, technically, I own the house. It’s in my name after all, but you know, since I’m a good person and a good father, I let you live in it still. For Kimi’s sake.”

Rolling his eyes, George would bite the inside of his cheek, not knowing what to say. Max was right. He owned the house, not George himself, but it still felt like an invasion of privacy. Not wanting to agree with the man, he’d change the subject. “Just take videos for me, please.”

--

“Daniel, I just don’t fucking understand why he has to be such a pain in the ass.” Max would yell over the sound of two GT3 cars flying down the track in front of them. “Well, you should be glad that he’s concerned about Kimi.” The Aussie voiced back, taking a sip of his coffee after.

“True, but still. He could at least care about him without being such a bitch about it.”

Daniel would sigh, taking his eyes off the track to glance at Max. “Well, at least he cares, Max. He cares a lot. I mean, he retired to take care of Kimi after you guys took him up. It clearly meant a lot for him to just quit like that.”

“Stop making me feel bad.” The Dutchman would kick at a pebble on the ground, hand crushing an empty Red Bull can.

“Sometimes you just need to hear the truth, Max. The tough thing about it is that it’s always going to hurt one way or another.”

Laying on his stomach, Kimi would groan into the blanket on his bed, Oliver laying next him stomach-side up.

For the past 30 minutes, Kimi had been complaining to his best friend about his parent's issues. The constant bickering when they saw each other, the insults, complaints, everything that unfavorably added to the steaming pile of shit that built up over the years after the divorce.

Kimi never discussed with his parents about how he felt about the separation. Maybe once or twice to George, but he had practically never spoken on the topic with Max. The boy wasn’t shy about his feelings, nor was he too shy to express them, he had just never spoke on them. The constant arguing between his parents makes it impossible to ever say a word without them being drowned over by the sound of the yelling or the complaints.

Whenever he could, he’d reminisce about the mornings where he would wake up to the smell of fresh breakfast being cooked along with the sound of his parents bickering about what to wear to their date night.

Since he was 15, every Christmas, birthday, or even when he’d see a shooting star, he’d silently wish for his parents to get back together. For life to be normal again. Unfortunately, he knew it would never happen.

Startling Kimi, his friend's voice would break the sudden silence that fell over them directly after the boy's small groan.

“You should try to make your dad have your other one over for dinner one night.” Oliver spoke, throwing a ball toward the ceiling and catching it after it fell, only to do it again.

Kimi thought about it for a solid second, before lifting his head off the bed to speak. “Like he’d ever let that happen.”

“It’s worth a try.”

“Maybe I’ll bring it up when I see him again.”

Kimi would roll over, eyes no longer shut against the sheets, but now facing up toward the white ceiling. His eyes would follow the ball; watching it hit the ceiling only to fall back down and repeat the cycle.

Ollie would stop for a brief moment, adjusting his head to glance at Kimi. “Just tell him they’re gonna see each other whether they like it or not. They’re both gonna be at most your races, right? They’ll have to be in the same garage, which means they’ll be like, a foot or two away from each other.”

The Italian teenager would stare at the ceiling again, thinking about it for a moment. Ollie was right, they’d both see each other at his races here and there. But who knows, maybe George would run off to stay behind Kimi’s grandpa, Toto, the whole time.

“True. My dad’s gonna be at all of them, I think. Not sure about my papa, he’ll probably go whenever he’s free. I don't know though. But, I’ll think about bringing it up.”

Wednesday

“So, Kimi, what’d you do today?” Max raised a brow as he glanced toward his son, a hand working a fork into his pasta.

Silence had plagued the dining table before the Dutchman had spoken up. The tension between George and Max was thick, uncomfortably thick. Despite trying to break it on multiple accounts, Kimi found no success whatsoever. It seemed impossible to get them to speak without it being a snarky comment from either man.

Luckily, Max tried to engage in conversation, only with his son of course. He didn’t want to give his attention to that British prick that sat across from him.

Startled from hearing his dad’s voice, Kimi would look up from his plate only to have his eyes graze over George, then back over to Max. Even though both his parents sat at the same table again, it still didn’t feel right. “I went to Grandpa Toto’s today; we talked about some stuff for the upcoming season. Boring things.”

“Ah.” Max nodded, taking a sip of his water.

Before another word could leave Max’s mouth, Kimi would quickly excuse himself from the table to use the restroom. With the boy’s seat now empty, only Max and George occupied the table.

“Max.”

“George.”

The British man winced his eyes slightly from hearing his name exit out of Max’s mouth. It had been a while since he heard him say his name with no insult being tied to it. Maybe they could finally have a decent conversation for once.

“So, how was Andrea last weekend? He and Oliver didn’t cause you any trouble, I presume?”

“No, they were both fine. No trouble on my end. They’re both good kids anyway.”

“That’s good.” George would voice as he refilled his wineglass for the third time that evening. A visibly concerned look fell across Max’s face. “Isn’t that the third glass you’ve had tonight, George?”

A small giggle would come out of George as he put the bottle down, bringing the brim of his newly filled glass up to his lips. “How do you think I’ve been putting through your bullshit tonight, Max?” Taking a slow sip, he’d lock eyes with the man across, the blue orbs bearing a rather sensual hunger.

Damn George and his drunk induced horniness.

“Did I miss anything?” The sound of Kimi’s voice along with his footsteps echoed throughout the space. George immediately tensed up and snapped out of whatever state he was in before going back to his usual self.

“You missed nothing, don’t worry.” A small grin would turn up on the Brit’s face as Kimi sat back down, unaware of his parent’s previous conversation.

It was clear that this wouldn’t be the last of the encounters. With Kimi’s season coming up, more exchanges seemed bound to occur. It was just up to both Max and George if they wanted to pursue them.

Chapter Text

“I swear it feels like it was just yesterday when he was still karting.” George sighed, shifting his gaze from his phone to the man sitting across from him.

“It truly does. Now look at him, racing for his grandpa.”

“Why couldn’t he stay 5 forever?” Watching his son groan into his hands, Toto would let a small chuckle leave his mouth.

“That’s how I felt with you.”

George would lift his face from his palms, giving the older man an intense stare.

“It’s not the same. He’s still a baby.”

“Which means you need to stop babying him, son.” Toto would lean back into the sofa, keeping his eyes locked onto the younger man. Feeling somewhat annoyed, George would roll his eyes. “You sound just like Max.”

The older Wolff would sneer at the mentioning of his son's ex-husband. “So, you’re saying I sound like a dirty Dutch bastard?”

“Dad, how many times do I have to tell you he’s changed? He’s not as bad anymore.”

“As bad? George he was never good in the first place. That bloke was never there for you or Andrea, especially as he was growing up. You had to constantly rely on me and your mother for help! He was never a good husband or father, point blank. You cannot change my mind.” Toto would cross his arms over his chest; it was clear that speaking about the Dutchman left a bad taste in his mouth.

“Well, he’s been more present these past couple years. He's put effort into seeing Andrea when he can. I may not like him anymore, but he isn’t as bad of a father as you make him out to be.”

“I just don’t understand why you’re siding with that prick; you argue with him every time you see him. Besides, he’s the one who left you. You should hate him. He’s a parasite.”

“Well, your wife told me that I shouldn't hold grudges. It’s child's play.”

“Stop listening to your mother.” Toto would squint his eyes at George, a wide grin on the brit’s face.

Chapter Text

max v kimi

Music blared throughout the vast Monegasque home, Kimi walked around cluelessly, trying to find his best friend. It wasn’t his first rodeo, that was for sure, but this seemed different. Yes, he had gone to parties, but those were with his parents or just small gatherings. Galas, birthday parties, baby showers, you name it. But those parties didn’t seem like this. This was party drug central. He was no stranger to small substances, but anything beyond weed, he had never tried it. He didn’t seem exasperated to get his hands on it either.

Startling Kimi, Gabriel, a fellow rookie on the grid, would clasp a hand onto his shoulder. “Kimi! You made it. I didn’t expect you to actually come.” Andrea’s eyes would scan over Bortoleto. For starters, he reeked of alcohol, and his nose was rather red. Someone was having the time of their lives.

Rolling his eyes, Kimi would respond. “I just wanted to get out of the house and away from my dad.”

“Ah, I see. How are they doing anyway?” Gabriel started, clearly talking about both of his parents. “I hope they’re doing good; divorces can be messy.”

Coughing, he’d remove his hand. “Anyway, Ollie’s in the kitchen. Down the hall to your left.” The Brazilian would glance to the open doorway, a growing smile on his face. “I’ll leave you to it.” With that, he’d walk off.

Kimi would brush it off, mentally replaying the instructions in his head. Down the hall to your left. Simple as it can be.

Getting confused along the way; he’d eventually find Oliver. He was currently hunched up in a corner sipping on a cup, his face scrunching up every time he’d take a swig. These kinds of scenes weren’t really Ollie’s cup of tea either, but as he likes to say, “You only live once.”

“Ollie!” A wide smile would appear on Kimi’s previously confused face, the young British man reciprocating it. Maybe this wasn’t going to be so bad after all?

“I don’t know what’s going on with them. They're so like... bipolar with each other.” Kimi would play with the almost empty bottle of beer in his hand, swirling it around. Slumped against the wall, he’d let the back of his head fall against the thinsupport behind him, letting out a tired sigh after.

For the past 15 minutes or so, he had been venting to Ollie about his parents (again), the alcohol making him more vulnerable than usual.

Oliver, sitting opposite from him, would flick the bottle cap from his beer at Kimi. “Well, they seem like they’re starting to try at least. Before they wouldn’t even look at each other, right?”

Kimi would nod, playing with the bottle cap before throwing it back. “I guess they are, they're talking more than usual. But it just seems all too forced. I feel bad.”

“Don’t feel bad. There’s no harm in it.”

“I guess... I don’t know anymore, I shouldn’t even try to get them back together. It’s set in stone; they aren’t getting back in a relationship.”

Oliver raised a brow, taking a swig out of his bottle, his face scrunching up again. He didn’t even know why he bothered with drinking that garbage in his hand.

“Where’s the fun in that? You can’t just give up; that’s not the Kimi I know. Besides, you’ve only tried once. Maybe with a couple more attempts something can stir up.”

“We’ll see. It just gets tiring.” The young Verstappen would sigh out, his eyes drifting away from the man across to the wood flooring beneath him. He had thought about it for a second, maybe he should try again? Like Oliver said, there’s no harm in that.

“God what is up with this gloominess? It’s killing the mood.” A Kiwi accent would fill the empty hallway. Liam Lawson, along with Gabriel, would walk down toward the two boys sat on the wood floor.

“Why aren’t you guys in the living room or something?” Gabriel spoke out, leaning against an open doorway. “C’mon the people here don’t bite. Not that I know of.”

Kimi would roll his eyes, shifting his gaze from the floor to the two men that just entered. “I’m good.”

“But are you? Maybe you just need a little boost.” Liam would grin, giving Gabriel an impish look.

“A little boost?” The boy would look up at the pair, then back down toward the boy across from him, Oliver.

“Yeah. Just something small to get both of you guys' spirits up.” Gabriel’s hand would slip into his pocket, fumbling around for something. A couple seconds later, he’d whip out a small baggy from his jeans, the clear bag containing small circular pills. He’d wave them out in front of the boys, a grin still clear on his face. “Let’s have some fun, okay?”

Groggily opening his eyes, Kimi noticed he was in a different environment than what he’d usually wake up to. He couldn’t remember much from the night before, only recalling talking to Oliver before having Gabriel and Liam interrupt them. He took a second to see if he could remember anything else, till he remembered vividly taking pills. Shit. He took pills, then probably drank more after that, and did god knows what else. His dad was going to kill him.

Rushing to get out of whatever room this was, he’d quickly wake up Oliver who was dead asleep next to him. “Ollie.” He’d shake the sleeping boy, getting no response, “Ollie!” Kimi would whisper at him with a harsher voice. Finally, Oliver would start to wake up, yawning with it. “What?”

With a panicked look, Kimi would already start getting his stuff, rushing to leave. “Ollie, we have to go, it’s the morning.”

“Shit!” The British boy would jump off the small sofa in the room, swiftly starting to sweep the room for his own belongings.

“Fuck my dad is going to kill me.” Kimi would mutter out, his voice panic stricken.

“Dude, my parents are going to like, ground me for life. They don’t care if I’m 19 I’m going to get my ass beat.” Oliver would grab his phone off the floor along with his belt, the expression on his facelooking like he was rethinking his life choices.

“If we hadn’t taken those pills this wouldn't have happened.”

“Fucking Gabi...” The Brit sighed out, ushering himself and Kimi out of the room.

Kimi would quietly enter the large apartment, hoping he wouldn’t wake up his dad. He should still be asleep; it was too early for either of them to be awake.

“Why are you just coming home? I told you one.” A Dutch accent would alarm the boy, his eyes widening immediately. Shit.

Max would rise from the couch in the living area, his expression unreadable. “You know you could have texted me instead of leaving me worried. If your dad was here, he’d be livid. I could easily text him right now and tell him about this.”

“No!” A panicked expression quickly appeared on the young boy's face, his skin starting to pale. “Please don’t tell him. I didn’t mean for last night to happen; I just got carried away.”

The Dutchman would sigh, sympathizing with the boy for a second before speaking up once again. “I won’t tell him. But I don’t need you getting into a habit of this. When the season starts up, you’regoing to have to be more independent. I don’t want you getting yourself mixed in the wrong crowds. You’re an adult now, you’re responsible for your own decisions.”

“Don’t forget that.” With that, Kimi’s father would disappear down the hall, the sound of his door clicking shut louder than usual. The rush of anxiety he once had begun to slowly disappear, but the lingering feeling of disappointment replaced it shortly after.
