Chapter 1: HATE

Chapter Text

(NOTES AT THE END OF THE CHAPTER)

(POV Nezuko)

Hate. It's the only way I can describe my feelings towards my older brother. Ever since our father died, he became the pillar of the family, selling coal to support our other siblings—the ones our bastard of a father left behind before he died. For anyone else, this would be a blessing—having such a kind and attentive brother. But for me, it was hell. I admit that at first, it was comforting to know that we would be okay thanks to our big brother. However, over time, he became the main source of attention and joy for our mother and siblings. Sooner or later, everything began to revolve around him. No matter how hard I tried to help with his chores, I was always scolded by our mother to let Tanjiro do it all. WHAT NONSENSE. I was the second oldest—why couldn't I help, receive some attention or appreciation?

Soon, this feeling kept growing stronger. It was frustrating. I knew that if I complained, that BITCH of a mother would accuse me of being envious and ungrateful for my brother's efforts. No matter what I did, it was always overshadowed by whatever Tanjiro did.I started going out more often. I couldn't bear to look my brother in the face. All I could think about was the envy and hatred his mere presence caused me. To vent all that frustration and hatred, I began punching trees like a maniac. At first, it hurt like hell, and my knuckles ended up bleeding, which predictably made my older brother worry—and I had to reluctantly accept his help. Days, weeks, months, and years passed. I continued this routine of punching trees every day. At some point, I could make holes and dents in the trees. That's when I realized I had a pretty beastly strength for an ordinary woman.

I also began training my body and endurance in the cold of the mountain. Running and increasing my stamina were daily tasks. Even so, I wasn't satisfied. My brother remained the center of attention, and I was starting to accept that this would be the reality of my life.

Until that day happened...

And I met...

That man...

MUZAN KIBUTSUJI

(POV Tanjiro)

It was a calm day. Today, I had to go back to the village to sell coal. Living on a mountain was inconvenient, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. My beloved mother and precious siblings were here, and I had sworn to protect them after our father's death.I was getting ready to head down the mountain, with the coal sack on my back—pretty heavy, but after years of doing this every week, it wasn't too hard anymore. As always, my siblings begged to help me. I knew they appreciated me a lot and wanted to return the favor. Even though their intentions were good, they were barely 10 years old. They couldn't help much, and I preferred to do things quickly and easily myself.

"I already told you, Takeo—better stay here and look after the others," I said with a smile as I patted my brother's head.

Takeo just grumbled a bit before nodding and going back inside our home. I had just started heading down the mountain when I heard a very familiar voice calling out to me from afar.

"LET ME HELP YOU!" shouted my sister Nezuko as she ran toward me.My relationship with Nezuko had become complicated a few years ago. Suddenly, she began to look at me with hatred, started ignoring me, and spent more time outside the house—always coming back hurt. When we asked her about it, she just said she was training. I told her to stop that training, that she was destroying her own body and I didn't like seeing her so bruised. But when I said that, she looked at me with such hatred—if looks could kill, I'd be ten feet underground. After that, she became even more distant—leaving early in the morning before any of us woke up, and returning late at dinner time. I could never understand Nezuko's sudden change, and it tore me up inside—not being able to help her was frustrating.

Seeing her now was quite a shock. Her body was toned due to her training—her strength and endurance were remarkable and worthy of praise. She had let her hair grow down to her knees, and puberty had clearly enhanced her physical features. She could easily be the most beautiful woman in the village.

"Nezuko..." I almost whispered in surprise at seeing her so early.

"Let me help," Nezuko said a bit calmer now.

"Nezuko, you know I can handle this by myself. Go spend time with our siblings—you've been so distant from us," I said, worried, since Takeo and the others had started asking why she was so cold.

Nezuko frowned.

"Why... why is it only you who gets to do that...?" she said, clenching her fists in anger.

"You know that as the oldest brother, I'm the one most qualified and responsible for you all," I said with a frown, already running late to deliver the coal.

"You sound just like that idiot of a father of ours," Nezuko said, looking at me with eyes full of hate.

"NEZUKO! Watch your mouth when talking about our father—he was a great man," I said angrily at her disrespect.

"Yeah, so great he left mom pregnant knowing he was going to die," Nezuko shot back, just as enraged.

SLAP

"That's enough, Nezuko! You're going back home to think about what you just said about our own father," I said firmly and furiously.

Nezuko looked at me like I had just murdered our entire family in front of her. She turned and disappeared into the woods, swallowed by the trees and snow.

I felt a void in my heart as she left. Even though what she said about our father wasn't right, hitting her wasn't right either. She must be going through something. I'll apologize when she comes back for dinner.

I said to myself as I resumed my path to the village...

(POV Nezuko, later that night)

Damn him...

Damn him...

DAMN HIM...

I was storming through the woods, my thoughts filled only with rage. That BASTARD not only dared to hit me but also scolded me like he was my father. He clearly let that "pillar of the family" nonsense get to his head.

I stood before a tree, got into a fighting stance, and started punching it fiercely, releasing all my pent-up rage.

—I HATE YOU—

—𝐈 𝐇𝐀𝐓𝐄 𝐘𝐎𝐔—

—𝐈 𝐅*𝐂𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐇𝐀𝐓𝐄 𝐘𝐎𝐔— 𝐈 𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐝, 𝐦𝐲 𝐤𝐧𝐮𝐜𝐤𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐬

—𝐈 𝐇𝐀𝐓𝐄 𝐘𝐎𝐔—

After a few seconds catching my breath, I looked down at my bloody, splinter-ridden hands. What could I do to stand out—to be recognized, not just as my brother's shadow?

"What an incredible display of power, girl..." said a voice behind me. It sent shivers down my spine. It felt like a predator stalking its prey—and I was the prey.

"W-Who are you?" I asked, trembling, frightened by his presence.

"Who I am doesn't matter. What matters is what I'm going to offer you," he said, revealing himself—a man who looked around 35–40, with jet-black hair, blood-red eyes, pale skin, and an elegant suit topped with a fedora.

"A-And what is that?" I asked, still intimidated.

"Become a demon. I can feel your hunger for power and strength—the hatred coursing through your body. Your potential to become one of my demon moons is incredible," he said, smiling.

"Become a demon? Demons are real? And if so... does that mean I'll have to eat humans?" I asked, now less nervous.

"Yes. Demons are real. And to grow stronger—to reach the level of an Upper Moon—you will have to eat humans. So... do you accept?" he asked, extending his hand in agreement.

I thought for a second. Though becoming a demon sounded insane, the offer of power—of proving to my STUPID family that I was more than they thought—was very tempting.

"I accept," I said with conviction in my eyes.

"Very well..." the man said, extending a finger and piercing my forearm briefly.

I felt the pain of a thousand hells as my body began to change—my flesh felt like it was burning and regenerating at the same time, my internal organs liquefying and healing again. The intense pain lasted several minutes before I could finally stand. I felt revitalized—so much stronger, faster, and more powerful. A maniacal smile escaped my lips as I struck a nearby tree—it went flying.

"To prove your loyalty to me, you must do one thing..." the man said with an evil grin.

"What do you need me to do, my lord..." I said, kneeling in submission with a pleased smile.

"Kill your entire family and devour their bodies," said the man—now my master—as he gently stroked my hair.

I paused for a moment before a grin spread across my face...

YES, MY LORD...

(Third-Person Narrator)

At the Kamado house, everyone except Nezuko and Tanjiro was having dinner. They were worried—they had heard the argument between the two and weren't sure if they were okay.Suddenly, there were soft knocks at the front door. Takeo was the first to get up and open it. He saw his dear sister—but couldn't see her face in the darkness of night.

"Guys, Nezuko's home!" Takeo shouted, excited she'd finally join them for dinner. He turned to look at her, and some light from the house revealed her features—a horn protruded from the left side of her head, her eyes showed hunger, and saliva dripped from her mouth. Around her eyes and face were jet-black cracks.

Takeo didn't have time to ask about her appearance before her hand grabbed his head—then ripped it off. Kie Kamado and the children were horrified. Nezuko—their daughter and sister—had done something so monstrous.

Nezuko stepped inside, a maniacal smile on her face. She saw her terrified siblings and mother begging her not to hurt them—and it felt so... GOOD.

She approached...

Step by step...

And stroked her youngest sister's hair...

"I'm hungry..." Nezuko said before beginning the massacre.

(POV Tanjiro)

I was returning from selling coal. Sadly, it got late, and I had to stay at a man's house who warned me about demons that came out at night to eat people. Honestly, I didn't believe any of that—but I was tired, so I accepted his help.

I was walking calmly toward my house, wondering what my siblings and mother had for dinner... until I smelled it—that metallic smell... BLOOD.

I froze.

The smell was coming from MY HOUSE...

I ran as fast as I could, hoping—praying—that nothing had happened to my family. After minutes of running, I saw it...

The door to my house—wide open. BLOOD spilling from the entrance.

I approached, slowly, trembling...

I fell to my knees...

DEATH AND BLOOD were all I could see.

The BODIES of my family were scattered across the floor—some missing limbs, my mother missing her head.

It was HORRIFIC to witness.

Who could've done this? A killer? A thief? Some kind of bear or predator?Or a DEMON...

They were all gone. I was alone...

I just laid on the floor, waiting to die—either from cold or some animal...

...

...

...

"What happened here?" asked a cold, calm voice. I didn't even look up.

"I suppose that must be your family... They were definitely attacked by a demon," the voice said, still calm.

"What do you want from me?" I asked, annoyed by this man's musings.

"Would you like to avenge your family?" the man asked directly. I thought for a moment, but I already knew the answer.

"YES..." I said, with a mix of emotions—but mostly, determination. The man fell silent for a few moments—it felt like hours—before finally replying.

"My name is Giyu Tomioka. I'm a member of the Demon Slayer Corps, the Water Hashira. From now on, you'll be my apprentice. You'll train and grow strong enough to avenge your family. Understood?" he said—not as a question, but as an order.

I stood silently for a few seconds, absorbing everything. Not only had I learned that there was an organization that hunted and killed demons—but that I'd be trained by someone who sounded incredibly powerful and high-ranking. That didn't matter. They were offering me a way to avenge my family and grow strong.

I already knew my answer...

"OF COURSE!" I shouted with conviction, rising from the ground, energized for the new path ahead.

The man—Giyuu Tomioka—nodded and gestured for me to follow.

I SWEAR I WILL AVENGE YOUR DEATHS...

AND KILL WHOEVER DID THIS.
