Winter Lovers

Summary:

After living under the same roof all their lives, Jon and Sansa begin to develop some uncomfortable feelings for each other.

Chapter 1: Part I

Chapter Text

It was Jon Snow's last day at his uncle's home. After today he would be on his own.

Jon's father had died shortly before his birth and his mother in childbirth. He had been raised with his uncle in Winterfell and grown up alongside his first cousins. It was the only home he had known for 19 years. Now after finishing school and earning enough for a roof above his own head, it was time to say goodbye. He had never felt unwelcome here, but he knew his Uncle Eddard would appreciate having more space in his already cramped house. He and his wife had five children.

It was late autumn and the snow was beginning to fall, as it did in the north of Westeros. Its capital of Winterfell was one of the few large cities in the region as it tended to turn into an impenetrable wasteland during the winter. The taiga would be buried under mounds of snow. Temperatures would drop to -40 ° C. Direwolves and other exotic beasts would curl up in their dens for six months.

Jon examined the sky as he stood by his car, then went to his room to retrieve the rest of his hockey gear. When he had returned to his car, he found one of his younger cousins, the plucky little 8th grader that was Arya Stark, plopped in the front seat with her legs on the wheel.

"Aren't you supposed to be at practice? Or did they decide to kick you off the team?"

Arya grinned mischievously. "I made up some silly excuse about having the sniffles. It doesn't matter if they believe me or not. They know they cannot kick me off unless they want to lose every single game. I wanted to see you. I was hoping you wouldn't already be gone by the time I got home from school."

"Arya, you know I don't like tearjerking goodbyes. I'm an orphan, remember?".

"I'm not going to cry. I just wanted to see you before you left. I'm not a baby anymore."

Jon gave her a fatigued look. "Fine. But you will have to give me my seat back." He paused. His younger cousin's intrusiveness wasn't exactly welcome, but it might give him some sentimentality. Arya had always looked up to Jon growing up. When she was little she would try to imitate everything he did and when she reached adolescence she started dressing in the same goth style. Jon was wondering if he should give her some excuse to get out. He had always been fond of her but she could get annoying.

"Crying our eyes out now, are we?", said a familiar voice behind him.

Jon turned around. His one other female cousin, Sansa. She was in many respects Arya's opposite. She excelled in academics and socializing while Arya excelled in athletics and troublemaking. Sansa was tall and slender while Arya was short and muscular.

"No, I just wasn't letting Jon leave without talking to me", said Arya. "He is the one who taught me everything I know about being a teen rebel."

"A wannabe teen rebel", Sansa rebuked. She turned to Jon. "Glad you are finally doing it. I cannot wait till I have finally flown this metaphorical cuckoo's nest. It's not going to be fun when this little overgrown puppy is the only other teen here."

Jon just stood awkwardly. For reasons he felt uncomfortable thinking about, he had been hoping he would be able to leave without confronting Sansa. As she was usually busy with schoolwork or hanging out with her friends or whatever, he did not see her around the house as much. But when he did, he felt kind kind of awkward around her...

Sansa stepped forward to give him a bear hug. Jon did not expect it and he could do his best to hug back, but it was hard to when felt felt like his insides were on fire. She dug her neck into his shoulder. Jon felt himself harden. Fortunately, Sansa chose that moment to break apart.

"See ya, Snow", she said smiling. Jon could only stand there and pant for a moment. Sansa gave him a quizzical look.

"Uh, yeah. See ya", he managed to stammer.

By the time he had finished packing and driven off to leave the Stark sisters far behind him, Jon found his mind wandering. Wondering why he had chosen to leave home with no clear goal in life, what he would eat tomorrow and how his younger cousin had somehow managed to become so attractive to him.

Chapter 2: Part II

Summary:

In which Sansa discusses her troubling feelings with her older friends.

Chapter Text

"I genuinely think he is into me."

Sansa was staring at the ceiling while lying on the couch in Myranda's house. Myranda Royce, Sansa's best friend, lay on the carpeted floor glued to her phone. The statement did not seem to elicit any reaction from her.

Sansa continued. "Like, I kept noticing him staring at me when me and Arya were gaming. We were just lying on the floor and he, well, just couldn't seem to take his eyes off me. And yesterday, when I hugged him, it seemed to almost knock him over. He, like, seemed traumatized by the whole thing.”

“So you think he likes you? That wouldn’t surprise me. When he was still at school last year he certainly didn’t seem to like it when guys tried to hit on you.”

Sansa recalled the time last year when she had just started high school and Jon and Robb were seniors. While she was standing outside of their car, some other freshman guy came up and tried to make an awkward attempt at flirting with her. Jon had glared at him so hard it seemed to have a physical effect on him. At the time, she thought he was just being a typical protective older relative, but now she didn't seem so sure anymore.

"That's what everything seems to be telling me. I mean, I wanted to deny it, but I don't think I can anymore. What do I do here?"

Mya Stone, Sansa's other best friend, walked in from the kitchen to bring them some food. She didn't seem fazed by the conversation at hand.

Myranda turned to Sansa with a knowing smile. "Try to seduce him, of course."

"WHAT?"

"Come on, admit it. If you didn't like him you would not have wanted to bring this up with us. You know you want it."

Sansa was thinking. As she had been coming to realize her older cousin was attracted to her, it certainly made her feel uncomfortable but at the same time, part of her seemed almost enraptured by the thought. Granted, he might as well be her brother for all practical purposes. She had lived under the same roof as him all her life until recently. But somehow she felt there was something alluring about the forbidden nature of it all...

Throughout her childhood, Sansa had always seen Jon as a guiding figure to her. Even though he was closer to Arya, he had still helped teach her how to skate, ski and terrorize random people with snowballs. He had not been in her life as much in the last few years as she entered adolescence though they had both been in the same high school for a year. Sansa remembered when on her first day of high school some of her friends from middle school told her he was hot. After she heard that, her only response was to just smile and say "Avoid stating the obvious". Her friends giggled at that, so they apparently took it as just a joke. But actually, Sansa kind of always thought he was good looking. She just never thought about it much until recently. Now that Jon had moved out and Robb had joined the military, Sansa was the oldest Stark child left in their household. She found herself thinking about him a lot. She had been starting to notice how he looked at her and how it was actually starting to excite her.

"But- why- how could you suggest this? Don't you think that's creepy?" Sansa did not expect Myranda to react positively to the thought. She had decided to tell her since Myranda had more experience with relationships than Sansa did. Not that that was saying much of course. But ever since she started high school Myranda had been her mentor for every aspect of it.

They had known each other slightly before Sansa started high school as they were distantly related. But it wasn't until she started high school that she really knew her. Even though she was two years older, she had taken an interest in Sansa when she had arrived in some of the same math and science classes as her and Mya. Sansa had been the best student in her middle school class and had been accelerated years ahead in a few subjects. By the time her freshman year was over, Her, Myranda and Mya were practically blood sisters. But then she knew she would not be horrified either. Myranda had a very raunchy sense of humor and often seemed to take an interest in taboo subjects. But this reaction wasn't exactly precedented.

"No, I actually think it's kind of hot. And Sansa, I think we both know you kind of do as well. If you had truly been horrified about it, you would not be asking me about this. You would keep it to yourself."

"Umm..."

Sansa felt her hear beating rapidly. She had not expected to get into such an intimate conversation here.

"Maybe", was all she could muster.

Myranda grinned impishly. "Well, first of all you are going to need some sort of protection. If your seduction is successful ,getting pregnant with some inbred demon would probably spoil the experience. Also Jon doesn't have a girlfriend or anything, does he? I know he had some when he was at our school, but I don't think they were exactly long-term relationships."

"He was with Ygritte and Val before graduating, but he is unattached now. As far as I know."

"I know a lot of girls in our class found him very desirable last year. I think you had better catch him while you can."

"Well, he's living on his own now and I don't think he has to interact with very many people for his job, so I don't think there is exactly a lot of competition for him. But, seriously- you actually want me to do this?"

"Don't you? You're not going to get any younger, Sansa. Don't you think it's better to take risks in youth rather than end up an old hag with nothing to show for your life? High school will be over before you know it. Do you really want it to end without any sexual adventures to show for it? I know my high school career won't."

Sansa contemplated her words. She had never wanted to slow down in life. She was taking classes several years ahead of what was normal for her age. She had been working since middle school. If she had to work and study so hard at her age, why couldn't she play hard as well?

"You will be 16 in a few weeks. You are almost of age. Why not try getting rid of your v-card as soon as possible? Don't you want to get that out of the way?"

Mya, who had been quietly listening to their conversation, sighed. "I cannot believe it. My two best friends are a couple of freaks who think incest is hot."

"Mya, you know I consider "freak" to be a compliment. And so will Sansa before long. Will you not, my redheaded protégé?"

Mya didn't seem amused. "Disgusting".

Sansa continued the discussion. "But I still don't even get how this is possible. I mean, we've lived in the same house all my life. Shouldn't our instincts, like, prevent this?"

"Human instincts are not uniform. Evolution always adds some element of chance to our DNA", Myranda replied. "Besides, don't you know anything about our shared heritage? Back when our ancestors were aristocrats, they would sometimes have incestuous marriages. Maybe it's still in your genes."

"I'm glad I'm not related to you guys", said Mya.

"Yeah, well, anyway I think it is about time I became Sansa's personal teacher in sex education."

An hour later as Myranda was driving Sansa back to her house, she was telling her about how to get a contraceptive implant and how to signal sexual attraction and other seduction advice. "So when will you see him next?"

"I don't know. Our family nothing planned until December."

"Initiate. Like, tell him to come over for your birthday. Even if you're not doing anything for it. That will be a good excuse."

As they approached Sansa's house, Myranda turned to her. "So are you really going to do it?"

Sansa had felt uncomfortable about the idea at first, but now, with all of Myranda's advice and encouragement, she was starting to feel better about it. She found herself smiling for the first time that evening. "Yes", she said. "I'm gonna do it. I can do this."

Myranda beamed. "Do your best, my protégé."
