Work Text:
Every time Dee suffers another one of JJ’s love bomb attacks, as he’s come to think of them, he’d like to ask his unwanted admirer exactly why he’s so obsessed with him, but he holds his tongue, because he knows JJ doesn’t see it as an obsession. As far as he’s concerned, he’s head over heels in love with Dee, quite certain they’re meant to be together for the rest of their lives, living in perfect lovey-dovey bliss, even though Dee has tried in every way he can think of to convince the smaller man that he’s simply not interested. Nothing he says has any effect on JJ, who seems to be under the misguided impression that Dee is just playing hard to get, and has been for the past however many years.
Dee sometimes wonders if it’s his own fault that JJ fixated on him in the first place, because if so, it's a case of ‘no good deed goes unpunished’. All Dee did was give JJ directions when he first arrived at the police academy, and then later on, he rescued his fellow cadet from bullies, but that was something he would have done for anyone who was being picked on simply for being who they were.
Unfortunately for Dee, it had triggered an undying devotion in JJ that was totally unwanted, and entirely unreciprocated, and while Dee had hoped that several years of working in different cities, at opposite ends of the country, would have cured or at least cooled JJ’s ardour, it seems to have had the opposite effect. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, and all that crap.
If anything, his obsession has only grown stronger, his unwelcome attentions ever more persistent, and no matter how often Dee rebuffs his colleague’s advances, JJ just keeps coming back for more, like an overeager puppy, desperate for attention. It’s as if he doesn’t understand why Dee keeps pushing him away, or maybe he thinks if he just keeps trying, he’ll eventually wear down his crush’s resistance.
Day after day, they do the same dance, with JJ launching himself at Dee, hearts in his eyes, declaring his adoration and trying to kiss his Love God, or whatever his latest nickname for Dee happens to be. In his turn, Dee does his level best to fend JJ off, pushing him away, snarling at him, all the time knowing that it doesn’t matter what he says because JJ only hears what he wants to hear, too caught up in his own romantic daydreams to let a little thing like reality get in his way.
It’s almost enough to make Dee report JJ for sexual harassment, try to get him transferred to some other precinct, or better yet, another city. The only thing that stops him is knowing that everyone at the two-seven would find it hilarious that their six-foot-two colleague needed help fending off someone a good five inches shorter, and Dee isn’t quite desperate enough to open himself up to that level of humiliation. He has his reputation to uphold, what there is left of it, and anyway, maybe he’s just as delusional as JJ, thinking that his stalker is bound to give up pursuit of him eventually. All he has to do is keep pushing JJ away until he stops bouncing back, undeterred. This is a battle Dee is determined to win, and he’ll do it his way.
The End
