Paper Stars

Summary:

Nox and Chase celebrate their first wedding anniversary

Part of the Haunted By You series

Notes:

I thought I was done with HBY content then I saw the flufftober prompt list

Work Text:

Nox smiled down at the jar of Froebel paper stars on his desk. Today was his and Chase's wedding anniversary. One whole year ago they were married, and so much has changed.

Chase's music career took off. They now owned their own house, a cozy little cottage far enough away from town have privacy, but only a short drive away.

Their house was decorated in a bizarre mix of aesthetics that some how worked out well together. His siblings also lived in the house with their own room that Chase and Nox had added large shelves into to give each of the Keys their own houses.

Today, Chase and Nox were planning on having a picnic by the creek down the hill from their house. Nox smiled at the gift he prepared, reminiscing on the memories it brought.

"Good day, Pal! I have something for you!"

The thief looked over at Charles questioningly. The boy rummaged through his school bag and placed something into Pal's palm. A small paper star was folded from tan paper.

"What is this?"

"It's a paper star! I like to fold them when the teacher becomes a little too long winded." Pal chuckled.

"Perhaps, if you paid attention in class rather than folding paper stars, you would be less of a little fool," Pal teased.

"It is no fault of mine that the teacher's voice is drier than my aunt's loaves of bread!"

"You mean the bread that makes you ill?"

"All bread makes me ill, but hers is by far the worst."

"Well, I appreciate your gesture."

"Of course! Have a wonderful rest of your day!"

"You as well," Pal replied. Charles walked away likely to go home. Pal looked down at the star in his hand.

The theif gingerly put the paper star in his pocket, insuring that he wouldn't accidentally smoosh it.

It took about two days before a brawl damaged his paper star. Pal was devastated, though he would never admit that to Charles.

Thankfully, the fool had made another one at school and gave it to Pal. Pal stole a jar to place it in to protect it. He wasn't sure why he was so fond of a little star. It wasn't even symmetrical.

Chase walked Nox down the hill, picnic basket in hand. Nox felt smitten at the chocolate filled feast Chase had prepared for them.

Once they laid out the blanket and sat down, Nox quickly began to eat away at the treats.

"Oh! Almost forgot! This is for you!" Chase pulled out a small box. Nox opened it to find a pair of silver earrings with stars and the moon dangling off of chains between the main earring and the cuff that was attatched to it. Nox quickly swapped out his studs for the new pair.

"They're beautiful!"

"I thought you might like them!" Chase grinned. Nox awkwardly shifted to pull the jar out of his tote bag.

"I, uh, also have something for you." He handed Chase the jar.

"Each star has a note written in them to remind you how wonderful you are," Nox explained, avoiding eye contact. His husband placed his hand on Nox's reassuringly.

"This is so sweet, Noxxie! I will treasure them forever!" Nox gave him a small smile.

"Also, aren't these the type of stars I'd fold back in ye olde day?"

"Yes, um, when Violet and I had escaped to the library, when we weren't in stories, there wasn't much for us to do to pass the time. I decided to use that time to learn how to make them."

"I always wondered what you guys would be up to outside of stories." Chase crained his neck back to plant a kiss on Nox's cheek.

"Happy anniversary, Moonlight!" Nox leaned down to meet his lips for a chaste kiss.

"Happy anniversary, Starshine."

~~~~~~~
Pal had never seen the stars, the city fog made sure of that, but if he ever had to guess what a star would look like it would be a person with golden blond hair and honey brown eyes.
