Chapter 1: Hisako is born

Chapter Text

Hisako’s tragedy began before her life even started.

Her mother was Hiyori Hyūga, younger sister of twins Hiashi Hyūga and Hizashi Hyūga. Her father is Saku Uchiha, older brother Mikoto Uchiha, the future wife of the head of the Uchiha clan.

The perfect candidates for a political marriage. A marriage meant to stop a hostel takeover. But unfortunately it didn’t. It only delayed the inevitable. Saku and Hiyori's marriage was bad. They fought daily. Married at 19 and 21 a year later Hisako was born.

Hisako's first memory was when she was 3. In that small house on the edge of the Uchiha compound. It was fuzzy but one thing that was clear was the shouting. Both of her parents in their Jonin uniforms arguing. Then a knock on the door of course Hisako opened it just a crack.

On the other side of the door Aunt Mikoto had a sweet smile on her face and a gentle hand on her 7 month pregnant belly.

Hisako always thought that Aunt Mikoto was beautiful. Soft black hair, pail skin with long thick eye lashes framing onyx eyes.

“Hisako good morning, are your parents home?” By this time the noise had stopped quickly and her father ran up behind her. “Mikoto, what are you doing here?” her father asked behind her. “ Well I need help with shopping and I figured time with my niece would be fun.”

That's where the memory ends.

The first time she saw Itachi was just after she turned 4.

Two months later, she saw Itachi again at her mothers funeral. Then her training began.

In her life there were only a few people she loved: aunt Mikoto, aunt Haru Hyūga, Shikaku Nara,  Yoshino Nara Shikaku's wife. Later she would love far more people Itachi, neji, Sasuke, Shikamaru, Hinata and Hanabi. Even later thar would be shisui, kakashi, shizune, tonton and lady tsunade.

Hisako first noticed that she was strange at the clan leaders meeting when she was 5. This was also the day she met  Shikaku Nara and Yoshino Nara.

She had no idea why she was here except that she was sitting next to Aunt Haru Hyūga. Her uncle Hiashi Hyūga was sitting next to his wife. Hisako doesn't know what to think of either of her Uncle's Hiashi Hyūga or Fugaku Uchiha. She had never seen them in the same room until today but they didn’t look happy. She wished aunt Mikoto was here but she was at home with a 1 year old Itachi.

She was one of the only kids in the room. Then a young man with black pineapple hair came in and the meeting began. A member from the Yamanaka clan, a guard standing behind the head of the family. "The war is still not looking up. We need more shinobi, or a secret weapon to end the war.” The faceless man looked at her then everyone did.

“When did she begin her training?” the head of the Aburame clan asked in a cold calm voice.

“She started chakra control at 3 and physical training at 4.” Fugaku answered blankly.

“And?” the angry clan leader prompted.

“Hisako is average in every aspect, no Kekkei genkai either.” Her uncle sounded disappointed. And everyone in the room looked disappointed, some even angry.

“Well then what's her use?!” then the shouting began.

Aunt Haru held her hand. Then a woman came up to them. She had tan skin, dark brown eyes and straight brown hair pulled in a low pony tail with three strands framing her face. She was one of the nice ladies serving tea to everyone. She whispered to aunt haru then gestured for both of them to stand up as the shouting increased and a vase broke as the door to the meeting room shut.

“Please follow me lady Haru, lady Hisako.”

They were led to a small garden with a picnic blanket. Just then Hisako’s stomach rumbled. She blushed realizing it was around lunch time. The nice lady and aunt Haru laughed softly.

“Ok little lady, how about some food.” the woman said.

“Ok but what is your name? I have never seen you before. Mum said not to take food from strangers." Hisako tilted her head sideways, eyes narrowing in suspicion, lips pulled into a small pout.

“Ok.” the lady leaned down to her height, smiled and stuck her hand out. “ My name is Yoshino Nara. I am a Chunin kunoichi of the Nara clan." Yoshino got back up and faced her aunt. Her voice got more serious. “Lady Haru I think you should get back to the meeting they will notice you will be gone soon.” lady Haru nodded, turning back to Hisako, speaking softly. “Ok Sako I will be back, listen to Yoshino and don’t leave unless me, Hiashi or lord Fugaku come to get you.” Hisako nodded.

Lady Haru turned back to Yoshino. “Please take care of her.” Yoshino nodded. “Yes lady Haru.”

Aunt Haru trend and left. It was a nice spring afternoon warm with a slight breeze.

“Ok little lady, how about we eat the katsudon in here.”  she gestured to the two bento boxes as they sat down on the blanket.

The katsudon was good.

“I like this katsudon. It's better than my dad's. He's not very good at cooking.” Yoshino looked over and laughed. Hisako said this with her cheeks full of food. She was cute, one eye held the Byakugan the other and onyx eye, short straight chin length raven black hair. Both women in spring kimonos. Yoshino was in a light blue kimono with pink flowers. Hisako was in a light yellow kimono with white flowers.

After they finished, Yoshino stood up and dusted off her kimono. “Lady Hisako, how about we go for a walk? You have been working on chakra control right? Because there are pretty flowers just past the river.” Yoshino pointed to the right. Thar was a small river and on the other side were some flowers a bit further away.

Hisako nodded. “I can walk on water. But aunt Haru said that I can't go anywhere without her.” Yoshino leaned down again. “It’s ok your aunt said that you can go around the grounds so long as you can see the main house.” Her aunt had said that when they first sat at the meeting table.

So Hisako and Yoshino stood and walked over to the river then walked over the water. Soon they were at the clearing with the flowers.

The clearing was beautiful rose bushes, cherry blossom trees and soft green grass.

Yoshino broke the salience.

“So I heard you are going into the academy in a few months.”

“Yup dad said that I will be going and training at school but I already do that. I go to aunt Haru’s 3 days a week then aunt Mikoto's for 3 other days. I don’t have time for school.” Hisako had a frustrated face.

“Really?” Yoshino looked thoughtful. “ Yup but I can’t wait to make friends. My only friend is Itachi but he is bad at playing. He also can't throw shuriken.” Hisako said very matter-of-factly.

That got Yoshino's attention. The rest of the afternoon they watched butterflies and talked about how to care for shuriken.

Hisako doesn't remember much after that, just that she liked the nice lady Yoshino.

As the sun was starting to set. Aunt Haru and uncle Hiashi came to get her. Yoshino, her aunt and uncle walked back to the house. All people present for the meeting looked tired and pissed off as they said goodbye to the Nara clan host.

When it was her uncle's turn she stepped forward tugging on the head of the Nara clans son Shikaku sleeve. He looked down at the determined 5 year old.

“ Excuse me but can I come back? I like miss Yoshino. She is nice. I would like to visit her if possible.” later in her life people will tell Hisako that she is very honestly blunt. But currently she is a determined 5 year old.

Shikaku got down to her level looking slightly confused. “ Yoshino?" “ Yes, the pretty brown haired lady. She was in the blue kimono. I want to see her.” Hisako was nodding very seriously.

“ It is your call son, you are taking over.” the Nara head spoke for the first time. “ I don't see a problem, just ask your family if it is ok.” Shikaku nodded to her uncle and aunt. “ It would not be a problem.” Her uncle spoke up. Then they said the goodbyes.

As they were leaving she heard the Nara head was scolding his son about names or something.

That night she skipped home humming and smiling. Tonight she was staying at the Hyūga compound.

A week later she walked to the Nara clans territory. Lord Shikaku was standing out the front yawning. This time neither of them were in kimonos. Lord Shikaku was in the standard ninja outfit. Dark blue almost black, red swirl on the arm and kunai strapped to his thigh.

Misako was in a black shirt and shorts with black ninja shoes.

The main house was a traditional Japanese style with a koi pond.

“ Lord Shikaku, I have come to see Miss Yoshino." lord Shikaku laughed lightly. “ you just say what's on your mind don’t you?” “ Of course the only mind readers in the hidden leaf are the Yamanaka clan.” Nodding in her 5 year old serious. “ Ok, let's see Yoshino.”

“ Miss Yoshino!” Yoshino turned around to see lord Shikaku and little lady Hisako.

“ lady hisako what are you doing here?” Yoshino looked puzzled. She was dressed the same as lord Shikaku in the ninja uniform. “ I really wanted to see you. You helped me with my training. It was fun.”

“ Yoshino.” Shikaku cleared his throat and looked down. “ umm you are cleared of your duties for the rest of the day.” “ok thank you lord Shikaku. Little lady, what would you like to do?”

Hisako thought very hard squeezing her eyes shut is concentration. “ Can we play a game?”

Lord Shikaku spoke up and the two girls turned their attention back to him. “ How about shogi?”

That day was the first shogi game of many. Hisako spent many days and afternoons on the engawa playing shogi, reading, chakra control, taijutsu and shuriken. At first it was only Yoshino and her with Lord Shikaku coming around every once in a while. Then one day miss Yoshino was busy.

After 4 months of Hisako coming to see miss Yoshino she was out for a mission.

Hisako was let in by lord Shikaku's mother and led out to the engawa and given tea and snacks. Her head was down. After 10 minutes lord Shikaku came out and sat beside her.

“Hisako-chan, Yoshino is on a mission. Why are you here?” That's when Hisako looked up at him. She was crying. “ oh umm Hisako what happened?” Shikaku stroked her back awkwardly trying to comfort the 5 year old. Then Hisako launched herself on to Shikaku wrapping her arms around his stomach. After a few moments Hisako mumbled something. “ What was that Hisako-chan?”

“ Am I a monster?” it was said softly in a quiet fear.

“No, no you aren't a monster.” Shikaku spoke softly, wrapping his arms around the little girl, softly pulling her into his lap and holding her.

They were later found at dusk by Yoshino.

That was the first night Hisako stayed at the Nara house.

Chapter Text

The next year passed by in a blur. The spring just before Hisako turned six.

Her birthday, then her mothers death anniversary. She spent the day silently crying next to her mothers grave. She died in the 3rd grate ninja war.

Hiyori Hyūga was a strong quiet presence in the Hyūga clan. She had a pretty smile when she smiled. Her favorite flowers were violets. She loved udon. She had straight waist length brown hair that was normally pulled back in a low bun. Her eyes were the Hyūga clan's signature light purple of the Byakugan

The day after she spent training with uncle Hiashi. He was harsh. She hit wood and steel. By the end of the day her hands were bloody. She was exhausted and in pain. Her uncle sighed.

“Hisako, that is enough. Get clean up and go to bed." She bowed to her uncle and left the dojo.

She then ran into her other more reclusive aunt Nira Hyūga and Hizashi Hyūga, her husband the second son of the Hyūga clan. She then bowed to them and went inside.

The next day she was taken in front of the Hyūga clan elders. Hideshige Hyūga, her grandfather, was in the center at his sides were her two uncles. They were there to see her perform her forms of the Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms. She performed them well, not perfectly as she still did not have the Byakugan.

Hideshige Hyūga stood. “ enough.” her grandfather turned to uncle Hiashi. “ she is not improving. That…” he pointed to Hisako. “ Abomination was made to help in the war or to make shore the Uchiha stayed in line. She has not accomplished either of those goals. ” He turned back to Hiashi. “ Hiashi, I want you to spar with her. Do not hold back. I want you to try and awaken her Byakugan.”

Uncle Hiashi stood and walked over. He took his place to the side of Hisako and he got into a fighting stance.

Hisako turned. Lowering her body into a fighting stance.

Her heart was racing in the few moments of peace before the fight started. She has only sparred with other kids. Never a full grown adult.

Hisako was terrified. She was shaking and her breathing had sped up. He activated his byakugan. Then she tried to kick her uncle.

The kick didn’t land. But her uncle’s strikes landed. One to her stomach, one to her head. This was the first time she had felt this type of pain before.

After that it was a blur.

First she felt her ribs crack, then her wrist, then her ankle. The fight lasted less than 3 minutes.

The next time she woke up she was in the hospital. 3 weeks later.

It was late in the day the sky was colored orange from the setting sun.

She woke up and turned her head to the side. There was a woman. She had short black hair and a black kimono. She was also holding a pig.

“Good, you're awake.” A strong authoritative voice came from the other side of the room. A blonde woman with low pigtails and a purple diamond on her forehead. “ You were out for 3 weeks. Luckily everything is fixed now you will only need two more days of observation.” She walked over to a desk with a computer. She clicked through to find a file. “ ok, a few questions. First, what is your name?”  She turned to hisako. “ hisako.” the blonde lady sighed. “ Your full name.” Hisako looked down. “ People get mad when I say my name. I don't even know which one is the right one.” That is when the black haired lady stood up. “ that is ok, Hisako. My name is Shizune.” The blonde lady looked over to hisako and shizune. “ Ok hisako, tell me what your name or names are.”

Hisako breathed in. “ My name is Hisako Hyūga or Hisako uchiha.”

The silence in the room was defining. Shizune froze. The blonde lady was frozen over the computer with wide eyes. The blonde lady then leaned back in her chair, a hand covering her face. She chuckled a cold broken sound. “ I need a drink.” “ lady tsunade!” shizune whisper shouted chastising this ‘lady tsunade’

“ ok, ok have you awakened the byakugan or Sharingan?” “ no but I am good with kunai and I can use a fire ball Jutsu.” Lady tsunade got a slightly stressed look on her face. “ ok, you are starting school in a month, correct?" “yup” Hisako was sitting up now. Propped up on the hospital bed. “ Most kids in the clan’s avoided me. I train, I go shopping with aunt Mikoto, flower arranging with aunt Haru and I play shogi and cloud watch with Yoshino and lord Shikaku.”

“Shikaku Nara? You go to play shogi with the new head of the Nara clan?” lady tsunade said with a raised eyebrow, playful smirk on her face.

“ Yes. They are very nice when my uncles and grandpa are mean.” Hisako lowered her head, gripping the blanket.

“ That explains why the young Nara head came to check on you.” tsunade smirked again.

“ lord shikaku came to see me?” Hisako had a wide expiration. Shizune giggled then spoke. “ Yes, lord shikaku and a young woman. Other visitors include your aunt Mikoto and your aunt Haru. Lady Haru bought those flowers.” shizune pointed to hisako’s bed side. A clear vase held violets, lilies, two roses and orchids. “ And that's not even the best part.” Shizune smiled. “ Your aunt lady Mikoto told us that your father is coming home in time to see you go to the academy.”

After a physical and blood test she was left alone to think how she ended up here.

Hisako may have been young but she understood what was happening and started to understand her place in it all. Her mother died in the conflict. Her father was away most of the last two years. She was going to school to graduate and fight.

The next day aunt Mikoto came in with little Itachi.

“ Hisako, are you feeling ok?” “yup” hisako smiled at her aunt. Mikoto bought her niece some books.  They talked for about an hour. Hisako played with Itachi a bit too. After that mikoto had to leave to go shopping. She promised to get hisako hard candy and deliver it when she is discharged. Hisako found out she will go with her after getting out of the hospital.

The day went by quickly.

Miss Shizune came in just after dinner. Hands held behind her back a small smile on her face.

“Hello Hisako, how was your day? Any pain?”

“ Miss Shizune, my day was good. Aunt Mikoto gave me a few books to read and not much pain, only about a 2.”

“ Very good. There was a delivery after visiting hours for you.” Miss Shizune pulled a stuffed deer from behind her back and it had a green scarf on. Tied on the scarf was a tag.

Shizune walked over and handed her the deer. Hisako looked at the card. Written on it was ‘ get well soon shogi is boring with yoshino’- shikaku under it was written ‘ dont listen to lord shikaku. I am just fine at shogi. But I do miss our tea time and shuriken training. Please get well soon.’ - Yoshino.

Misako gently took the card off putting it on the side table then hugged the stuffed deer. Shizune quietly slipped out of the room, turning off the lights and closing the door.

The next day Hisako was finally allowed to walk around. She had a bandage on her head, one on her right wrist and left leg as well as some bandages on her ribs covered by her hospital gown. But when she could not leave without someone with her.

Hisako knew the only reason she had a private room was not her family's money but that she has both of the clan's blood.

The more she finds out how the world views her the more she cries.

Later Yoshino came to get her to have lunch outside. Her wonderful sandwiches.

When she was getting ready for bed, lady tsunade came in again.

“Hisako, I heard you went out and had some visitors today?”

“ hello lady tsunade, yup miss yoshino came and we had sandwiches.”

Lady Tsunade gave her a quick check up again. Turned off the lights then left the room.

As Tsunade left the room she sighed leaning against the wall in the dimly lit hallway.

“Lady tsunade” shizune walked silently up to the Sannin. “ what happened?” seeing tsunade face she guesses what happened. “You checked her chakra again, didn't you?” it was not a question. When Hisako first came in, a medic noticed something was wrong. This anomaly made its way to the fourth hokage and Jiraiya’s former student called her and shizune.

“ I fingered it out, shizune.”  Tsunade answered quietly. A choked whisper. “ Shizune, we can not tell the clans about this.” “ lady tsunade what is it?” Shizune looked scared. “ her chakra is being blocked psychologically.”

There was a beat of silence. Shizune looked confused and was about to talk. Tsunade held up her hand.

“ Hisako can perform perfect taijutsu, she learns hand signs fast even without the sharingan. The books she is reading are above her reading level for a child that age. She can preserve people's intentions and understand what is going on around her well.”

“ but” tsunade continues. “ control is her greatest strength. Her mother died in the war. Her father is never around. Both her uncles and grandfather are pushing her to be a weapon. She is unconsciously suppressing her chakra. The whole time she has been here we have never seen her cry or get angry.”

Hisako’s intelligence, observation and control will be her strongest assets. If she figures out how to use them she will become a very powerful kunoichi.

If not she will most likely die from a rogue ninja, an enemy combatant or her own family.

Tsunade turned to shizune addressing her in a serious voice.

“ We must tell the hokage and the hokage only. Keeping chakra in for a long time without direction or release can cause health problems.”

Shizune nodded. “ telling lord Minato will ensure someone will be looking out for her.”

Tsunade’s tone then turned playful. “ Well we know she will be a great strategist. After all, not many people play shogi with the Nara clan head.”

Chapter 3: Frist day at the academy

Chapter Text

The year Hisako turned six she started at the leaf villages ninja academy.

Two weeks ago Hisako was discharged from the hospital. A week ago her father came home.

Since she went to the hospital she has not been back to the Hyūga compound. But that's fine, her fathers home for the first time in a long time. She still trained with her uncle Fugaku and father. Her dad even took her to get flowers to put on her mothers grave. Even though  he didn’t enter the cemetery or go near her mothers grave. It’s ok Hisako understands that her mother and father did not love each other but they both loved her.

After leaving the flowers and saying goodbye to her mother she ran to her father and hugged him. They then went out to dinner. A small ramen shop. The man and his daughter were nice.

Soon it was time for her to go to the academy. Her father and aunt Mikoto walked her to the academy building. Two year old itachi holding his mothers hand.

The weather was beautiful that day. A clear spring morning the grass was green with dew still on it. Cherry blossom trees were close to full bloom. The soft pink standing out against the blue sky.

Hisako was wearing a light blue t-shirt Uchiha emblem on her back with long black pants. Newly grown side bangs covering her light purple eye. The eye that was supposed to be the  byakugan.

Turning back to her father and aunt she smiles. Her father ruffles her hair and smiles.

“Ok kiddo. Try not to get too injured and make a lot of friends. Got it.” Hisako nodded very seriously. Her aunt Mikoto smiled and leaned down to kiss her forehead. “ Hisako, remember to raise your hand and say please and thank you.” “ Ok aunt Mikoto I will.”

“Also.” her father spoke up again. “ remember your name?” “ yup Hisako Uchiha.” Hisako breathed out after speaking her name. The first time in her life saying a name attached to her first one.

Hisako hugged Itachi and said her goodbyes to her family.

She walks into the school and gets directed to a table with three jonin teachers sitting at it. She was then given a number of rooms and told to go there. Two lefts than a right.

Soon Hisako was in a classroom. It had auditorium seating three people per desk. At the front of the room there was a teaching podium and a blackboard.

She sat in the third row taking out a book and pencil. Then…

“ Excuse me but is this seat taken?” Hisako looked over to the voice. A girl with light blue wavy hair and chestnut brown eyes. She was wearing a light green dress that ended just above her knees. She had a smile that lit up the room, a contagious smile.

“ No, you can sit here.” Hisako said a little awe struck in the face of human sunshine. “ Thank you so much! Oh, I am Mira Okutomi by the way.”

Hisako nodded and she had a light smile on her face now. “ Hisako, Hisako Uchiha.”

“ wow you're from a ninja clan right?!” Mira leaned in close to Hisako's face.

“ Yes I am.” Hisako was confused. Mira looked like she had stars in her eyes.

her confusion must have shown on her face. Because Mira leaned back. And apologized.

“ Sorry, sorry. It's just that my family is not from the leaf village. We lived in a town close to the border of the land of waterfalls. I only saw ninja sometimes and none were really willing to talk to anyone. I’ve never really seen a clan before.”

Hisako blinked than smiles. “ That's ok. I can try to answer all your questions, if you like? But I also want to know what normal people live like. Is that ok?”

Mira nodded and smiled. “ ok an information exchange. I can live with that.” Mira winked. That was the start of one of the best times of her life. Mira was charismatic, sarcastic and not afraid of anything. She never worried.

Hisako aspired to be like her. Slightly isolated, awkward even, she was never really around kids her age until now. The more she grew the more she worried, the more she feared.

Two minutes before class, someone slid into the seat next to Mira. a boy he had short black wavy hair and onyx eyes. Signature traits of the Uchiha. He was dressed in a black long sleeves and long pants.

Hisako started to shake. She remembered the last time she tried to play with other kids. Whether it was at the Uchiha compound or Hyūga compound.

The day she first stayed at the Nara’s. Hisako had just finished training and was now going to play with some of the Uchiha kids. She saw a group just outside the house. There were some kids her age and some older around eight to ten. She skipped over and smiled. Just as she opened her mouth. The older kids of the group spoke.

“ fuck off you freak!” “ ew it’s the half bread.”  “ You can’t even use either eyes. That is so pathetic.”

Hisako started to tear up. The leader of the group stepped forward. “ aw, you gonna cry? Go cry to your mothers grave.” He held a rock in his hand and smirked. “ When are you going to understand that you don’t belong anywhere?” He sounded fed up. His tone was cold and detached just how the clan leaders talk to her.

He drew back his hand and pelted the rock at her. Hisako drew her hands up to shield herself. The first rock hit her shoulder. Then more rocks started raining down. Hisako ran. She ran out of the Uchiha compound and to the Hyūga compound. She was still crying softly when she got there.

She knocked on the door of the compound. A lady she did not recognize opened the door.

The lady sighed, beckoning her inside. Hisako was then led to a room. The lady then addressed her.

“ I will get the medic stay put.” Before Hisako could nod, the lady was gone. She closed the door but it didn’t close fully. She then heard a conversation on the other side of the door.

“ Mum, mum!”

“ sshh kana lower your voice. I am off to fetch the medic and stop yelling inside.”

“ Ok, who is injured? Is it the ones returning from the field?”

“ no just the forgotten lady.”

“Really the one with the weird eyes?”

“ lower your voice. She is still seen as part of the main family of both clans and is beloved by both her aunts."

That’s where the conversation ended.

Ten minutes later the medic came in. After getting healed it was mid afternoon she had skipped lunch. Hisako wandered for a while then she realized that she was outside the Nara compound.

“ Ok class, please stand.”

The teacher arriving and talking snapped her out of her memory.

Morning Classes went by quickly. Soon it was lunch time and everyone was getting up and talking. The boy finally turned to her and Mira.

Mira, who is always curious and has no social anxiety, introduced herself.

“ hi, I’m Mira okutomi and this is Hisako Uchiha, it’s nice to meet you!” the boy smiled waved and introduced himself.

“ Hello, my name is Shisui Uchiha.”

Mira's eyes sparkled again. “That's so cool. Wait, are you and Hisako related? Do you know each other? Do you live together?”

The next hour of lunch was shisui and Hisako explaining how clans and the hidden leaf village works. That yes they are related but no they didn’t know each other.

After that hour they became best friends.

Soon it was time for her and Itachi’s birthdays. Hisako's birthday was first and she was turning six. Her father was still home so she asked if she could throw a party and invite her friends.

Her friend’s being: aunt Mikoto, uncle fugaku, Itachi, aunt haru, uncle Hiashi, uncle Hizashi, aunt Nira, lord shikaku, miss Yoshino, Mira and shisui. Her father agreed after being worn down by her. This has now led her to her current position at the Nara residence.

“ a birthday party?” lord shikaku questions as he looked up from his invitation. They had just finished a game of shogi. Then Yoshino came out carrying a tray of snacks.

“ Lord shikaku what is that?” Yoshino balanced the tray on one hand and took the paper out of Shikaku's hand with the other and read it.

“Are you throwing a party?” “ mmm” Hisako made an agreeable sound around the snack she was eating. Hisako chewed then swallowed as it is rude to talk with your mouth full before repiling.

“ Yes, my birthday is coming up and dad is home and said it was ok.”

“ a birthday par—” “ sounds like a wonderful idea." Yoshino cut Shikaku off, sending him a slight glare. Before turning to Hisako with a sweet smile.“ We will be there." Shikaku opened his mouth to protest but Yoshino held up a hand. “ I will give this to the elders and say that the day must be cleared for both of us.” With that she got back up and went inside.

“Troublesome.” Shikaku quickly muttered.

“ You two seem to have gotten close.” Hisako stated. Observation had been one of her many natural skills now in between the academy and being around the nara clan not much gets past her any more. “ Thinking about it now is strange, you two didn’t even know each other last year.”

Shikaku sighed then chuckled slightly holding his tea in a light grip. “ I had seen her before. Just never talked to her.”

“ And you thought she was pretty back then too.” Hisako said with a sly smile while taking a sip of her tea.

Shikaku ended up choking on his tea just as Yoshino came back out.

“ ok shikaku, Hisako both our schedules are cleared and dinner is on the tab—” Yoshino looked and saw a coughing shikaku and an innocent looking hisako.

“What happened?!”

Hisako just burst out laughing. An end to a great day.

Chapter 4: Birthday's and winter

Notes:

another chapter. now that the content is going to get a little darker. so consider this a trigger warning. if you want me to do individual ones per chapter just let me know. happy reading. :)

Chapter Text

Three weeks later hisako turned six.

Her and her father spent the whole morning decorating the living room. A banner that said ‘happy Birthday’, navy blue party hats and a white table cloth smoothed on the long table. The party started at ten.

Hisako was in a light purple dress that ended just under her knees.

At 9:45am her aunt Mikoto, uncle fugaku and little itachi knocked on the front door. Hisako's father went and answered the door. He hugged his sister and shook his brother-in-law's hand. Itachi ran inside and attached himself to Hisako who swept him up in a hug. Aunt Mikoto was holding a beautiful wrapped box.

Mikoto showed up in her regular black dress with fan earrings that hung down and had a flower on the end. Fugaku was in his regular Jonin uniform with the Uchiha police force star on the sleeves. Itachi is in a black shirt and black pants with the Uchiha symbol on the back of his shirt.

At 9:50am Mira and Shisui arrived holding a present each, accompanied by Mira's father, a man of average  height with light blue hair and green eyes. Mira's father was not staying as he had to work.

He worked as a carpenter.

“ Hisako!!” Mira ran up and hugged her. Then Mira stepped back and shisui came up to hug her and smiled. Mira was in a pastel pink dress with her hair tied up in a bun. Shisui wore black pants and a dark blue shirt.

At 9:57am Yoshino and Lord Shikaku showed up. Yoshino smiled and kissed Hisako's cheek. She was dressed in a red dress that ended just above her knee. Lord shikaku was in the standard uniform but he had cleaned his earrings this time.

The only people left were those from the Hyūga. Saku Uchiha was aware of the tension between the clans. The only really neutral clans are the Akimichi, Nara and Aburame. Saku decided to distract his daughter by sending her, Itachi and her two friends out to the back garden to play.

Soon all the kids were outside. The adults sat down to talk. Saku sat down in the living room with them.

“ So what has my daughter been getting up to to know the head of the Nara clan?” Saku decided to break the ice. After all he has never met these naras and needs to make shore his daughter is ok.

The young lady Yoshino answered him. “ We met at a clan leaders meeting. Some of the elders and people of other clans had some opinions about hisako’s training." She finished gravely.

“ I remember that.” Mikoto continued. “ I was at home with itachi at the time. She went with her other aunt and uncle from the main family.”

The elephant in the room Hisako's missing family. Saku knew it was a stretch that they would come. After all, with the stunt at the main house and their house being in the Uchiha compound.

Soon it was time for lunch and cake. A beautiful strawberry short cake with soft cream and elegant chocolate writing. ‘Happy birthday’ six candles. Party hat on everyone's heads. Shikaku and Fugaku looked a bit disgruntled.

“Oohh is it time for presents.” Mira said, heading over to the presents and handing one over to her. Just then there was a knock at the door.

“ I’ll get it!” Mira got up and went to the door. A few minutes later Mira returned with Nira and Haru Hyūga. Both women were in light kimonos. Nira looks a little uncomfortable but Haru just smiles at her niece.

“ I am so sorry we are late.” haru looked apologetic.

“ It's ok aunt haru. I am glad you are here.” Hisako just smiled and beckoned them over to some free chairs.

“Ok back to presents. Mine first!" Mira exclaimed, cutting the tension and making Hisako and shisui laugh as they were used to Mira's antics.

The party continued until 2pm. Thar was dancing and a game of throwing kuni blindfolded. Most of the adults won and surprisingly shisui did well too. Hisako noticed her uncle fugaku looking at shisui after. An expression on his face she had never seen before. Her stomach had a strange sinking feeling.

At 2pm itachi started to fall asleep. And Mikoto and Fugaku decided it was time to go home. With that Nira decided to go home to sighting  her husband coming back from a mission. Ten minutes later, Mira’s dad came and she left. After that shikaku and Yoshino left to go home.

Now it was just Hisako, shisui, saku and haru. Hisako and Shisui went out to play with Hisako's new shuriken (from her uncle Fugaku).

Now it was just saku and haru in the living room.

“ I have not been here in a long time.” Haru spoke quietly as she glanced around the living room. The living room had a lounge and two armchairs. Haru started to look around as Saku sat down in one of the armchairs.

“ Well neither have I.” Saku said in a quiet and sad tone. After Hiyori died he was shipped off to the frontlines. Leaving his three year old daughter.

Haru hummed in agreement. She picked up a picture. Hiyori and Saku on their wedding day, one of the only photos of them together. Saku in his black kimono with the Uchiha crest. Her sister-in-law that she grew up with, Hiyori, was beautiful in her traditional white kimono.

“ Do you regret marrying Hiyori?” Haru turned around, now looking at Saku. Her face pinched with sadness and worry. He had his head down in a painfully similar way to Hisako “ no. Our marriage wasn’t perfect, far from it. I got Hisako from it.” Saku looked up and out to the back yard where Shisui and Hisako were playing. “ she was a good mother to Hisako. Only after she was gone did I realize how much she did for both of us.” Saku breathed out, looking up at Haru. “ I may have never loved her but I did admire her.”

Then Haru asked a simple question that stumped him. “ Why have you never told Hisako about Hiyori?” Haru continued. “ She was three. The only way for her to know her mother is through stories. Hiashi and Hizashi won’t tell her anything. The only way for her to know her mother is through you or the few stories I can tell her.”

Saku was about to open his mouth to reply. Then Hisako and shisui came in laughing and the tension broke.

Just then, Saku realized how late it was. The sky was a bright orange. Haru and Shisui said goodbye. Saku started making dinner with Hisako's help.

Later that night as Saku was tucking his daughter into bed. He told her stories of her mother. How she would chew on pencils and pens, how she hummed, sang and read to her pregnant belly. Her favorite was the story of a wise tiger moving away from their home land to a new land and befriending a fox.

Her favorite hair pin and how she grew her hair out at sixteen to spite her former best friend.

Hisako drifted off to sleep smiling.

Saku snuck out of her room. When he quietly closed the door he noticed he was crying. Instead of going to his room he went to his dead wife’s. It was still the same untouched since she was last in it.

After Itachi's birthday the seasons grew colder as winter approached.

For some reason the Uchiha clan elders decided that as a part of the main family Hisako must see the effects of war. also something about aid and man power.

So here she is running out of the village with her uncle fugaku, her father and about ten other shinobi from the Uchiha clan. They had been running for a few hours when Hisako started to see a change.

They stopped at a town. The first thing Hisako noticed was how many wounded shinobi were here. Thar was a man, a leaf shinobi.

He was digging a pit and piling bodies in it. He then struck a match and lit the bodies on fire.

“ Dad, why is he doing that?” her father turned to look at the pit and the man. It was her uncle fugaku that ended up answering her. “ They can not transport all the bodies. Others carry disease or the bodies are too mangalated and delicate to try transporting."

Thunder rumbled in the distance. Fugaku turned to saku. “ We should get going and find somewhere to stay.” her father nodded and gestured for Hisako to follow.

They ended up at a small hot spring and got shown a room by the old woman who ran it.

That night Hisako went to the hot springs. When she got there a girl was already in the water with her eyes closed. Hisako decided to make her presence known.

“ Mind if i get in?” the girl looked up and smiled. “ Not at all. I'm Rinka.” Hisako smiled. “Hisako.” Rinka hummed thoughtfully before speaking again. “ Hisako, that's a cute name.” Hisako inclined her head. “ Thank you.” Rinka has pretty blonde hair down to her shoulders and dark gray eyes.

Later Hisako went to sleep in between her father and uncle. She fell asleep with the sound of metal clashing getting closer.

The next morning over breakfast Fugaku set his chopsticks and addressed Hisako.

“ Hisako, today we are going to help the war effort. We will be helping with food preparation and in the medical tents. As well as helping the locals. Others such as me and your father will be formulating a rescue operation. Do not tell anyone about the operation. ok?” Hisako swallowed her rice and nodded at her uncle.

After breakfast Hisako got dressed in her training clothes. A mesh long sleeve shirt under a short sleeve black shirt and black ¾ pants.

Hisako and her father walked over to a bunch of big white tents. Today she will be in the medical tents.

“ Ok Hisako, today I will be with your uncle. You will be shadowing a hidden leaf ninja. You will listen to them and make sure you are doing what they tell you. Also..” her father pointed at the edge of the forest to the left of the tents. “ Do not go into the forest left of the town.” Even though no one ever said it out loud she knew that was where one of the fights were.

Then a lady came out of the medical tent. A familiar lady. With a little pink pig. Miss Shizune. Miss Shizune and Tonton.

“ Miss Shizune, tonton?”

Chapter 5: new friends new pain

Notes:

thank you for the kudos and encouraging words they really help motivate me to wright. I am trying to make the chapters longer so updates will be slower sorry. also the time line is different in cannon shizune is around 8 but in this she is closer to 17 and Minato is already hokage. happy reading.

Chapter Text

Hisako was so happy to see Shizune. She was more happy to shadow her. She said her goodbyes to her father.

Shizune was wearing the leaf shinobi uniform. Her hair went down to her shoulders, maybe just a bit longer tied in a ponytail.

“ hello lady hisako, you are going to shadow me and tonton as long as you are here. But I need to tell you this now I must call you just by your first name. And you must call me Shizune.”

“ Ok, Shizune. I understand why, we have already learned about using names on the battlefield.” Hisako looked around. “ But I have a question, where is lady tsunade?”

Shizune looked a little sad then it was gone. “ Lady Tsunade does not go on the battlefield anymore.” Hisako knew she should drop the subject. She nodded and followed Shizune into the medical tent.

When hisako entered she froze. Her face paled, her eyes got wide mouth hanging open. She was shaking and her breath was quickening.

Inside the tent were leaf shinobi covered in bandages with blood spilling out of them. To the left of her was a pile of severed limbs. She could smell the iron of blood, the dark stench of swamp mud and the smell of burning, ash fire and explosion tags.

Shizune put a supportive hand on her shoulder. Shizune knelt down, getting eye to eye with the six year old.

“ I know this is scary, I know you are overwhelmed, I know you don't want to be here. But this is the reality of war.” Shizune gestured around. Hisako saw a woman get put in a body bag, then a twelve year old Genin with bandages over one of her eyes.

She had brown hair in space buns with two big bow clips and one sky blue eye. She was crying. No she was sobbing, chest heaving, snot running down her face and cheeks had tear tracks red and blocky.

A man walked up to her, probably her captain. He walked up and gripped her hair and slapped her face. “ Get a hold of yourself! No one here cares that you lost an eye! You are fucking going back out there tomorrow!” After yelling at her he stormed out past shizune and hisako. Hisako understands she remembered the Hyūga’s.

That day hisako decided something. she will learn, watch, observe. She will do what she can to survive.

Hisako looked back to Shizune. The look on Hisako's face made Shizune freeze.

When Shizine reminisced about the third war, this day stood out. The first day shizune saw the woman that hisako would turn into. Not the shaking pale six year old but the strong, elegant and determined young lady, the last lady of the uchiha and one of the strongest kunoichi.

Hisako spent the first day learning first aid from Shizune, cataloging bandages and helping make pain killers from local plants.

Near the end of the day shizune led hisako over to the brown haired girl with one eye.

“ Excuse me. Are you  miwa akiyama?” Shizune addressed the one eyed girl Miwa. “ I am shizune and this.” she gestured to hisako who was at her side. “ is hisako.” Miwa glared at hisako. Then Miwa spoke, her voice dripping with contempt. “ You're from a clan right?”

Hisako nodded and Miwa scoffed then continued. “ so what you just here to do charity work the fuck off back to the village to never leave again?”

Hisako frowned but this sentiment is nothing new to her. Does she want to be a ninja? She didn’t know. She didn’t have a choice. All she knows is that she has a family in the village and she will do everything to keep them safe.

Shizune opened her mouth to speak but hisako beat her to it. “ I understand that you are angry. But this is not about me. First, your pain level.” Miwa was stunned but answered all of hisako’s questions as shizune wrote the results down. “ Ok, you seem good enough for discharge?” Hisako directed the question to Shizune. Sounding unsure for the first time in the whole interaction.

Shizune shook herself out of her daze. “ Yes, yes we just need to remove the bandage and check under it.” Shizune reached over and took the bandage off.

After the bandage was removed it just looked like she had her eye closed with a scar over it, a deep one. It was from a kuni that was obvious. Then shizune lifted up her eyelid under just soft pink tissue and it pulsed slowly with her heart beat.

It was  mesmerizingly morbid.

Hisako is used to Scars. Everyone in her family had at least one. It is just the life of a shinobi.

That night she sat next to her father across from her uncle fugaku and wondered how many scars they both have.

The next day was much of the same but it changed when hisako and shizune were asked by the villagers to look over some people that were kidnaped and freed in the last raid.

The sky was covered in gray clouds. There has been no sun for weeks. The weather was getting colder. Shizune, hisako and the villagers went to the town hall. A two story building that was filled with hospital beds. Inside were several people, some adults and children ranging from three to seventeen.

As they made their rounds hisako saw a familiar face, Rinka. She had her blond hair pulled up in a pony tail. She was moving crates with vegetables. Hisako smiled and went over to say hi.

“ Rinka. It's good to see you.” Rinka turned around as she put a crate down. “ hisako what are you doing here?” Hisako smiled and pointed behind her. “ I am shadowing and helping. I came with my dad to help the war effort." They talked for a little while longer then hisako went back to shizune and rinka went back to work.

The last person they saw that day was a three year old. He was fidgeting like sitting hurt. He had a gash on his head and strange marks on his shoulders. He wore an oversized yellow shirt. His name was Aohi. short brown hair with brown eyes and floppy bangs he kept pushing out of his eyes.

“ ok” shizune brought out a blank piece of paper and started sketching the mark. It looked like a bite mark but wrong, no teeth indents, no puncher wound, just a vague mouth shape. Except it was a strange toxic green.

As Shizune sketched the mark she started asking questions. “ Aohi. How did you get this mark?” Aohi answered calmly. Even at three he is so accustomed to war that he is not panicking just sitting and answering questions. (In her next life hisako will learn that this response is apparently wrong.)

They learnt a lot about the kidnappers. They were hidden stone shinobi that were holding the prisoners in a cliff or underground, five to seven people per cell. Twelve other people had these marks.

Hisako was dismissed for the day. The sun was setting as hisako walked out of town hall. She heard a noise and looked to the left and miwa was standing there. Before she could say anything, Miwa turned and left.

Later after a nice dinner with her father and uncle hisako was in the hot spring when rinka came in.

Miwa and Rinka are around the same age, twelve to thirteen. So hisako asked her a question she has had since she met miwa.

“ Hey Rinka, you're a civilian right?” Hisako wanted for Rinka to nod then continued. “Why do people put such importance on clans and family names?”

Rinka looked up then back to hisako. “ I don’t know. But civilians do it because they have lords and stuff too. It's stupid.” Hisako nodded something somber in the air.

A week passed and everything is much the same. Then the patients, the ones kidnaped and several leaf shinobi started getting sick. Four villages died that week. Four children. Both Fugaku and Shizune were stumped. Since her uncle and father wanted to keep her safe she was relieved of duty.  Exposure was the most common theory.

Vomiting, seizures, weakness, confusion. Everyone died a few hours after the symptoms started.

Hisako was sitting by the river when Rinka showed up. Then Miwa showed up. They all sat in silence at the river bank for a long time. A heavy sorrow in the air. Hisako thought about Ahoi. He was sick with an infection apparently but shizune thought it had something to do with the stranger mark. Then hisako broke that silence.

“ Do you want to pick flowers?” Both girls looked at each other than hisako. Then nodded.

They didn’t talk. Just picked flowers in silence. In the afternoon the three girls gave the flowers to the patients and put the ones left on the fresh graves.

Hisako put white lilies, rinka put Rhododendron flowers and miwa put Freesia.

After dinner the three girls went to the hot springs. They talked and laughed. It was fun on a regular calm night. Probably her last calm night.

That night it felt different for a strange reason. It was calm to calm. Hisako woke up at around midnight between her father and uncle. The wind was picking up. A noise outside the room. It was stupid but hisako picked up a kuni and went out to the hallway.

Hisako doesn't remember but the next moment she was walking towards the town hall Aohi was out the front he was looking towards the battle field. a green light emanating from the mark. He turned his head to words hisako then…

BANG

Aohi’s body exploded.

His body flew everywhere, blood splattering. The only thing left was a single shoe.

After Aohi exploded things became a blur of movement. More people exploded. All with the mark.

All hisako remembered was a flurry of movement. Stone shinobi leapt from the trees closest to the small village.

All she remembers was burning and pain. Hot flames spread over the buildings. Leaf and stone shinobi attacked each other, flying everywhere. The yelling, the burning hisako saw her uncle directing people then spinning to defend himself.

Looking everywhere for a place to hide. She saw Rinka and Miwa. Rinka beckoned hisako over as they were hiding behind shrubs at the edge of the forest. She ran to her friends.

Once all the girls were in the forest they ran. Rinka knew the forest best so she was leading. Miwa was going slower than normal to stay with hisako and rinka. They ran to a clearing. Soon there was a noise off to the side.

Miwa stood in front of hisako and rinka in a defensive stance with a kuni.

Out from the forest came a man with a stone shinobi headband. Miwa launched herself at the other shinobi. The fight was fast and ferocious. Miwa was losing her face was getting bloody from the older shinobis hits.

Then two more shinobi came out from the forest laughing at the pathetic sight of three little girls. Hisako stood in front of Rinka with a kuni gripped tightly.

Hisako ran at the shinobi with controlled swipes; she cut him twice then Rinka screamed. Miwa was down. Hisako glanced briefly.

That three second window was all it took for her to be knocked unconscious.

She woke up in a cell with four walls of stone, one thick metal door in and out rink and miwa passed out next to her. They were all chained to the floor by their wrists.

The first week was hell. They were fed once a day, bathroom twice a day, Miwa bled through her clothes when her period hit. Rinka and Miwa were taken out once every two days for torture and return looking worse and worse as time went on.

Miwa looked the worst as she was the most valuable, a leaf shinobi on the front lines.

Around the five day mark hisako and miwa were in the cell alone as  rinka was being tortured. Miwa said something that caught hisako off guard.

“ I am sorry hisako.” Miwa turned her head to look at hisako. She had an infected split lip, broken nose and a massive cut on her temple. This was the first time Miwa had ever addressed her with her name. Hisako's mouth moved faster than her brain. “ What for?” Miwa looked slightly amused. “ Assumptions. That and never apologizing after first meeting you. I assumed that you would be, well a bitch." It was said so matter of factly that hisako giggled. “ So why did you think that I was a bitch?”  Hisako looked at Miwa curiously waiting for an answer. “ back at the village I was put on a genin team.” Miwa paused, looking sad and mad at the same time. Then after a moment she continued. “ On that genin team was a boy from the Sarutobi clan. He was going to be deployed with me and Sasuko. Long story short he got out of it because of his connections. He is doing low ranked missions in the village now. He was a dick.”

Miwa looked up and saw a look in Hisako's eye. A look of understanding. “ I've met some dicks in my time.” Miwa chuckled. “ No offence but you are like six.” “ yup but I am still in the same position as you now.”  Miwa looked at hisako then asked two questions. “ Why are you here? Why do you cover one of your eyes?”

Hisako touched her bangs that cover her light purple eye. “ My father is Saku Uchiha and my mother was Hiyori Hyūga.” Hisako moves her bangs. Miwa looked horrified. She had heard of the freak of the village. An abomination of a child who was never supposed to be born.

“ I have the ability to activate the  Byakugan and the Sharingan. But currently I have activated neither. I am a failure of a weapon. The reason I am here is they want me to awaken them. Physical pain or emotional pain will force the eyes to awaken. Physical pain is not working so emotional pain is next. That's why I am near a battlefield. I cover my eye because I failed to live up to the Hyūga clan's expectations.”

“ They want to hurt me, break me.” Hisako was shaking as she said this. “ I won't let them.”

" you never get angry huh?" Miwa asked while tilting her head to the side.

she was right. her rebellion was not big but that was never hisako. She was quiet and controlled as ever even at six.

After hisako was finished, Miwa pushed herself off the wall and shuffled over to hisako. Miwa moved the little girl's bangs, taking out one of her bow clips. Brown hair falling over her left shoulder. She moved Hisako's bangs and clipped them. For the first time in a long time Hisako's full face was visible.

“ You are not a failure.” Miwa's voice was steady but soft. “ Show them you are not worried about whatever they think of your eye. see the world with your eyes.”

Hisako touched the bow and smiled. Thirty minutes later Rinka was thrown back into the cell.

Rinka looked surprised but smiled after a minute, happy that miwa was talking to hisako. But even that happiness in what the girls thought was the worst time in their lives but none of them know but it was going to get far worse.

In the second week things got worse especially for hisako. Normally hisako took the hair clip out before people came to cover her eye. Some one must have found out because things got worse hisakos torture increased.

Torture is probably the worst thing hisako has ever Experience at this present moment. She was cut, burned and water boarded.

It was agony. Kuni going through her flesh like warm butter. By the end of the week hisako had five infected cuts, miwa had a permanently bloody face, nine infected wounds and seven broken bones. Her temperature was rising and she was not going to last long. Rinka only had four cuts as she was a civilian and after they found out who hisako was they stopped torturing her as she was not that high of a priority.

The wounds hurt, thumping with pain in time with her pulse.

Two nights later there was noise outside the door yelling banging. Then silence. The door opened and her father, Saku, was standing in the door with three other shinobi. Her father ran to her checking her over. A female shinobi ran to rinka and one of the two male shinobi ran to miwa the other stayed by the door.

“ Hisako, are you able to walk?” her father asked her as one of the men picked up miwa. Hisako nodded. They left through the door and went through the dimly lit hallway.

Soon they were outside. The night air was cool, there was a smell of damp forest and gunpowder. Outside hisako saw her uncle stab one of the shinobi lunging close to them then directed an order to her father.

“ Saku, take hisako, miwa and the other girl back to the village and request assistance from the villagers once there. Take Aiga and Yurina for protection. Tell Shizune to get the beds ready.” Her father nodded “ yes sir.”

Aiga carried miwa, yurina had rinka on her back, hisako climbed on saku’s back. The shinobi ran towards the tree line.

As they were running something felt off. Hisako looked behind her. only her friends and leaf shinobi behind her. Like there were more people in the facility, only the low ranking shinobi were outside fighting. Hisako tried to signal to her father.

Her father dropped into a clearing. He pulled hisako in front of him, kneeling down to her level.

“ hisako what's wrong?” her father looked worried but said it in a slightly stern tone.

Hisako looked around the clearing. Miwa was still being held by Aiga, Rinka was standing by yurina. Hisako looked at Miwa then Rinka. Miwa was covered in blood and pus running a fever beat half to death. Hisako had five infected cuts and burns. But rinka had four shallow cuts, not infected. Her mind wandered to Aohi. He had cuts that had healed over but were once infected. he was a civilian.

Rinka's cuts were too shallow. She had no bruises except a black eye, she never flinched when someone was behind her.

No one saw her face except Rinka and Miwa.

“ Dad.” Hisako said in an urgent quiet voice. “ Did you find out how everyone got sick?”

Saku looked confused then answered. “ Yes, Shizune figured out that they were poisoned. They ate a poisoned plant. Why?" the sweating, nausea, paralysis. Rhododendron. Hisako learned flower arranging from her aunt Haru. her aunt haru a former Jonin combat medic.

Rinka was holding a food crate when hisako met Aohi. Rhododendron is poisonous when ingested and it is most dangerous to children. only children died.

Hisako's face paled as she turned to her father. “ Dad!" a whirring sound passed hisako's face.

The sickening sound of a kuni piercing the throat. Blood splattered over hisako’s head and face. It was warm, wet. red, red, red.

Her fathers body slumped and fell limp. He was dead, her father was dead, the one person in the world that loved her most. Dead.

Yurina leapt and disarmed Rinka successfully. Rinka started talking under Yurina. Cold and calculated.

“ So little lady hisako you fingered it out. Too bad it was too late. But you were the first to figure it out and at six it is impressive. If you did actually come out ok you would have been very strong.”

Stone shinobi leapt down from the trees similarly to how the three were kidnapped. Well two.

A fight broke out. Metal clashed, explosions sounded, jutsu destroyed the forest around her.

A stone shinobi came behind hisako arm raised with a kuni ready to strike the child.

Hisako turned around, kuni in hand and stabbed the shinobi in the heart. Hisako twisted the blade in the shinobi's chest. Blood spilled on her face mixing with her fathers.

After that shinobi fell hisakos gaze locked on rinka. A purple glowing eye with veins popping out the sides of her head. The other a red eye with a black circle a black pupil and a tear drop shape.

Hisako killed for the first time. One. two. Three. Hisako walked and stabbed anyone in her path. She saw openings she hit where the blue light was, people fell. The world was in slow motion.

Later when yurina recalled that night when hisako was six it was a very different night than what hisako remembered. Hisako remembered the grief, anger and not much more. Yurina remembered the crescent moon high in the sky, clouds parting as if in fear, the little girl walking to rinka, the bodies of four stone shinobi left in her wake. The glowing eyes the girl covered in blood.

Yurina was stabbed by a stone shinobi in the thigh she was leaning against a rock with her adversary dead beside her.

Rinka was running towards miwa lying unctuous on the ground Aiga was losing blood fast crouching next to her. Rinka stopped when she saw hisako. Hisako's voice came out quiet, hollow but steady.

“ Rinka, why do this? Why fight? Why pretend to be my friend?”

Rinka launched herself at hisako. Then a kuni embedded itself into Rinka's side. Miwa had her arm raised after throwing the kuni then she promptly passed out.

Rinka was crumpled on the ground. Hisako turned her over on her back. Rinka was crying with a soft sad smile on her lips. She looked up at hisako and chuckled.

“ No point in fighting back now. I liked you hisako but this is war no one who is on the battlefield wants it. But we do it. I didn’t fully pretend to be your friend.” Rinka turned her face to miwa. Her voice breaking.

“ I wish with all my heart that I could have truly been friends with you.” Rinka was crying chest heaving as she tried to steady her voice. Her blood steadily leaked out of her side. “ My time with you was the most happy and peaceful time in war. I hope when you and miwa get to the pure lands that you will forgive me.” Rinka turned her back to hisako. “ I want to pick flowers with you again. I am so sorry hisako. I wanted none of this."

Rinka died with hisako hugging her dead body. sobs making their way through shaking the little girls frame.

That is how fugaku found them. Hisako hugging an assailant, her fathers dead body lying on the other side of the clearing. Fugaku crouched down after signaling the shinobi to check on the others. He hesitated for a moment before hugging the small girl.

She then turned around in his arms. He saw her eyes and his stomach dropped. That night something changed and for the first time fugaku worried for his niece.
