Chapter 1: First Day

Chapter Text

It was Frisk’s first day at Under High. They were nervous, yet intrigued.. What would the day hold? They wore the same striped shirt they always wore and gave themself a look in the mirror. “And despite everything, I”m still me.” They repeated the phrase Toriel had told them a million times. You get to make your own choices and decisions in life. Every choice you make will alter the outcome of your life. This concept scared Frisk a little. That everything they did had meaning..
“Frisk, my child! Please do hurry up we’re going to be late!” They turned around and Toriel stood in the doorway.
“Come on. We’re waiting for you.”

Frisk followed Toriel out of the house and Asriel waited by a patch of golden flowers. Frisk gave them a smile and he returned the smile warmly. Frisk was still getting used to living with the Dreemurrs. Toriel and Asgore have been like parents to them, and Asriel has been a good yet strange sibling. With all of the tea and pies Frisk could ever ask for, life is good in New Home. But Toriel is making them attend school..
She’s stated many times that the students are lovely and the teachers are great.. But can’t Frisk still be nervous?

It wasn’t too far of a walk for them. The building seemed inviting, however Frisk didn’t want to go inside.

“Come on, It’ll be okay. We’ll do this, together.”
Frisk looked up at Asriel and nodded.
Asriel didn’t talk much. He mostly kept to himself in hard to reach parts of the castle. Frisk didn’t know why. Was it something they did? Was he upset that he had to share his parents with a human now? No, Asriel isn’t like that..

Frisk was snapped away from their thoughts when Toriel was introducing them to a short skeleton monster.
“It’s Frisk’s first day here.. I trust that you’ll watch over them. Will you?”
“Course I will Tori. Hey kid, wanna hear a joke? How do French skeletons say hello?”
Frisk shrugged.
“Bone-jour!”
Toriel laughed out loud. Frisk smiled out of politeness.

“Well my children, I’ll see you later. Learn something okay?”
“Alright mom.” Asriel mumbled, his furr being ruffled by his mother.
“Say, kid. The names Sans.” He holds out a hand to shake.
Frisk shakes the skeleton’s hand and a loud fart noise comes from the woopie cushin in between their intertwined hands.
“This time Asriel laughed out loud. “Ah the old woopie cushion in the hand trick.” The skeleton winked and drew back his hand.

Despite the blazing temperatures of Hotland, he was still wearing a fur coat. He must be from Snowdin. Frisk has always wanted to go to Snowdin.. They’ve heard many stories about it’s cold temperatures and surplus of dog monster residents.

‘SANS! ARE YOU TELLING SKELETON JOKES WITHOUT MEEE????”

A taller skeleton dashes over.

“Oh, This is my brother, Papyrus. He’s the coolest.” Sans’ voice was calm and smooth. Almost like his voice alone made Frisk want to be friends with him.

“Hello new FRIEND!!” Papyrus had a lot of energy for this early in the morning.

“Hello.” Frisk said shyly.

“Oh don’t be NERVOUS new friend! Sans and I will show you around the school. Teach you the ropes, tell you who the COOL kids are. Spoiler alert, IT’S US!”

Papyrus was walking around as he spoke.

“HEY! UNDYNE! COME OVER HERE AND MEET THE NEW KID!”

He dashes away towards two taller monsters. One a fish and one a robot. The fish glances over, a pained look on her face that she quickly hides with a smile.

“Hehe. Isn’t my brother the coolest. Anyways, lets go inside. We don’t wanna be late.”

Sans guides Frisk and Asriel into the building. It’s a lot cooler inside. There are many more monsters inside the school. Frisk is immediately filled with a sense of self awareness. That they were the only human.. They knew they were accepted among the monsters of the underground, but still. They stuck close by Sans and Asriel as they walked.

“I’ll catch you guys later. If you need anything, come find me Frisk.”

Frisk barely had time to turn to look at Asriel before he disappeared into the crowd,

“Hehe, Asriel. Sweet kid but a bit odd. What’s it like living with him and the king and queen in the castle?”
Frisk thinks for a second before answering. “
“It’s okay. He keeps to himself a lot. Toriel is nice, and Asgore is alright too.”
Sans gives a smile and a nod. “He’s had a hard life, loosing his sister and all.”
Frisk gave him a confused look. “What?”
“He’s never told you about Chara?”
“No?” Frisk stopped walking.
“Ah, I see. Sorry new kid. That’s his story to tell. He’ll tell you when he’s ready. Now we really should get to class.”
Frisk frowned and nodded.

They entered a small classroom. A ghost like monster stood at the front of the room and the tall robot Frisk saw earlier sat in the back row chatting with a dinosaur with glasses perched on her nose.
“Well, this is your stop. I’m afraid I”ve gotta leave you here. I”ll be here when class ends to walk you to your next class. You know, until you memorize your schedule.”

Sans gives them a smile and a wink before turning to leave.
Frisk takes a deep breath and goes to walk towards the robot in flashy metallic pink parts.

“H-hello.” Frisk mumbles. The robot looks up, flipping his hair around. The dinosaur looks up wide eyed, a smile spreads on her face.

“Hello human! I’ve heard so much about you! I mean,.. You’re the Dreemurrs new kid right? I mean, Asriel, Asriel told us all about you, I mean-”
“Alphys, hush. Hi, I’m Mettaton. And that’s Alphys. Big heart even bigger mouth.”
The robot says with a smile.
“It’s nice to meet you.” Alphys says nervously.
“You too.” Frisk says, just as nervous.

“You two are going to make great friends, trust me..”
Frisk doesn’t know what to say to this.

“Alphys, go over there, before the seats get filled.”
“But- but I-”
“Go!”

Alphys collects her things and walks over to the fish that Papyrus was so excited to go talk to. She must be popular. She looks popular. She looks cool. She’s surrounded by other monsters, talking and laughing with her. Her long red ponytail swaying with the movements of her head.

Frisk and Mettaton watch as Alphys goes over to the group. Frisk can now see that she has an eye patch over her left eye. She smiles and motions to Alphys to sit with her.

“She likes her…”
Frisk turns to look at Mettaton.
“Alphys likes Undyne, Undyne likes Alphys…”

Frisk looks back over at the two who are now in a conversation about something that’s got Alphys all giggly.

“Take a seat, stick with me gorgeous, you’ll be popular in no time.” Mettaton smiles and leans back in his chair.

Frisk took a seat next to the robot and maybe this day wouldn’t be so bad after all. Maybe going to school here won’t be all that hard.

The knowledge that they’ve made fast friends with several monsters already, fills Frisk with determination.
