Chapter Text
Chris starts to wake up and at first it took a few times to open his eyes as it was like his eyelids felt heavy.
Once Chris got his eyes open and they managed to stay open, that's when he saw his dad's hand on his and his head was on the bed and he had fallen asleep.
Chris looks around and he sees both his grandparents and his granddad has his eyes closed and he is obviously praying.
Athena is the only one who has her eyes open and when she sees her grandson is awake she lets out a gasp.
Bobby immediately opens his eyes and his head shoots up and he sees Chris is awake.
Bobby breaks into a massive smile and he is so glad his grandson is awake.
Bobby goes over to the bed and he gives Chris a kiss on the head and he then gently wakes Buck up.
Buck wakes up immediately and he looks at his son and sees that he is awake and he is completely relieved.
Athena goes and gets Dr Standing and he comes into the room.
Dr Standing introduces himself to Chris and he tells the boy that he is going to do a quick examination and Chris nods in response.
“I'm going to go and phone Hen.” Athena says.
Bobby and Buck nod and they don't move.
Out in the corridor Athena gets out her phone and she calls her best friend.
Hen and Karen's House.
Hen and Karen were at the dining room table and they were listening to Denny tell them all about his day and Hen's phone goes off and Karen looks at her.
Both women agreed that phones wouldn't be allowed at the table but Karen knows that Hen is waiting on a call to find out how Chris is.
When Hen told Karen what had happened she couldn't believe it and she was glad that her wife came home but she couldn't imagine how Buck, Bobby and Athena felt.
“I thought you said no phones at the table.” Denny says.
“Yes normally we wouldn't but your mum is waiting on an important call from aunt Athena.” Karen says.
Hen answers the call and she hopes it's the call that tells her that Chris is ok.
“Hey Athena, any news?.” Hen asks.
“He is awake.” Athena says.
“Thank god. How is he? How's Buck and Bobby?.” Hen asks.
“He is getting examined by the doctor so we will know soon enough and Buck is just trying to stay strong and the same thing with Bobby. God Hen I'm so glad he is alive as I don't know if I would survive him dying." Athena says.
“Don't think about the what if's ok focus on the fact that he is alive. Look, me,Karen and Denny are on our way.” Hen says.
Hen looks at her wife and she silently agrees that they need to be at the hospital to support their family.
“You don't need to come.” Athena says.
“Athena we're family and family shows up for one another.” Hen says.
“Ok I'll see you guys soon.” Athena says and she hangs up.
“Denny go and get your shoes on as we are going to the hospital to see Chris and to check on uncle Buck.” Karen says.
Denny does as she says and Karen looks at her wife and she knows she is trying to be strong.
“How are you doing?.” Karen asks.
“I'm ok and it's not about me.” Hen says.
“Hen you were on that call and you're the one who was treating Chris.” Karen says.
“I know but I need to be strong for Buck as he needs me to be strong and after what Chimney said I know Buck is going to be doubting himself.” Hen says.
“Howard Hen is not important and whatever he has said we pay no mind to and I'll make sure Buck knows that as well as we know that he is a great dad and that's all that matters.” Karen says.
“You're right.” Hen says.
“Ok I have my shoes on.” Denny calls out.
“Ok let's go.” Hen says.
Everyone leaves the house and they all get into the car and drive to the hospital.
Athena comes back into the room and Dr Standing has just finished the examination and he comes over to Bobby,Athena and Buck.
“The dressing that is covering the bullet wound is helping very well.
Chris will need to do extra PT and that will focus on making sure he can recover after getting hit with a bullet but it is going to cause more pain for Chris especially with his CP but if he doesn't do it then he is looking at more damage to his bones.” Dr Standing says.
“How bad is it going to be?.” Bobby asks.
“Chris is lucky as the bullet could have done more damage but it didn't. I'm going to be honest with you all.
Chris is going to be in a lot of pain and he may not want to do PT but you need to not let him stop as it's important that he do it.
Chris will need to be in a cast for a few weeks so make sure he keeps his arm dry as he can't get it wet.” Dr Standing says.
“Ok what else do we need to do?.” Buck asks.
“What I'll do is write a list for you.” Dr Standing says.
“Thank you Dr. We appreciate it.” Bobby says.
“Not a problem.” Dr Standing says.
Dr Standing leaves the room and starts to write the list for Buck.
Buck goes over to the bed and he takes his son's hand and he smiles.
“How are you doing buddy?.” Buck asks.
“I'm ok I don't really remember what happened.” Chris says.
“Well you don't worry about that. So me and you are going to move back into grandma and granddad's while you recover but we will let Carla know.” Buck says.
Chris nods and he loves staying over at his grandparents house as he gets to hang out with his uncle Harry who is his best friend.
The door of Chris's room opens and Hen's head appears.
“Hey guys, is it alright for us to come in?.” Hen asks.
“Yes Hen you can come in.” Bobby says.
The door opens more and Hen,Karen and Denny walk in.
Denny waves at his best friend and he smiles at him.
“Denny, why don’t you take my seat as I'm going to be back in a few minutes.” Buck says.
Buck gets up and he walks out of the room and the group looks at him.
Both kids don't see the worrying looks the adults have on their faces.
“I'll go and talk to him.” Hen says.
Hen has always had Buck's back from the day he started at the 118 and when they have been off shift and she admires Buck as he is a single dad and he always makes sure to be in his child's life and she struggles sometimes and she has Karen to share the parenting role.
Buck is in a deserted hallway and he sits on the ground and he just feels like such a failure.
Hen finds Buck and she sits down next to him.
“Maybe Han is right, Hen about how Chris would be better with other people who are better than me.” Buck says.
“Buck you are a great dad and I for one admire you as you are doing this alone but I have never heard you complain or moan about anything so Howard Han is not right at all and you need to get that thought out of your head.” Hen says.
“I just feel like if Chris wasn't with me then he wouldn't have gotten hurt.” Buck says.
“Buck you are not to blame, do you hear me.” Hen says.
Buck looks at his best friend and he is so glad that he met Hen as she tells him what he needs to know and she isn't afraid to give him a reality check.
“Thanks Hen, I appreciate it.” Buck says.
“You're welcome.” Hen says.
Hen gives Buck some more time and after 15 minutes they get up and head back to Chris's room.
Dr Standing stops Buck and gives him the information that he wrote down for him and Buck thanks him and tells him he appreciates it.
Dr Standing tells Buck that Chris will need to stay for a few more days just so they can make sure nothing has been missed.
After talking to Dr Standing and checking everything and getting some paperwork signed Buck and Hen come into the room again.
“Ok buddy unfortunately you need to stay here for a few more days as they need to check on you some more and when you're back at grandma and granddad's it will be online learning.” Buck says.
Chris doesn't like that and he doesn't want to miss a day of school.
“Chris sweetheart I know that you love school but unfortunately you need to stay at home but I'm sure all your friends are thinking of you.” Athena says.
Buck goes over to his son and he sits on the bed and he pulls Chris closer.
“I know you don't like missing school buddy but you need to have the time off so you heal properly and if you go back to early then you could get hurt more but how about once you healed up we do something fun or go away.” Buck says.
“How about I get a few brochures on some destinations that we all could go on for a family vacation?.” Karen asks.
“That sounds amazing.” Bobby says.
Chris is starting to get tired.
“Ok buddy I'll be back in the morning ok.” Buck says and he gives his son a kiss on the head.
Athena and Bobby do the same and Hen and Karen are the last people to say goodbye to Chris.
Denny tells his best friend to get better and he will see him tomorrow after school.
Chris falls asleep and the nurse says she will check on him and Buck doesn't feel just as bad.
“Come on guys, let's go back to our house and we will just order some take out.” Athena says.
“Athena you are not paying, I am.” Hen says.
“Hen it's fine I'm the one inviting you guys back to mine and Bobby's.” Athena says.
“Athena Grant Nash I'm paying. That is final.” Hen says.
“Looks like you're following orders.” Bobby says.
“Fine but I'm buying dessert.” Athena says.
“Deal.” Hen says.
The group head to Athena and Bobby's house and Buck calls Carla and tells her what happened and she says she will speak with the doctors and the physiotherapists and make sure that the plan they have for Chris is the right one.
Buck thanks her and lets her know that he and Chris are moving back in with Bobby and Athena.
Carla is glad that Bobby and Athena are going to take care of Buck and Chris and she has a lot of respect for them.
The next day came around and Buck had so much to do and he spoke to Bobby and told him he needs to take a step back from work as Chris needs him and Bobby was proud as he is glad Buck knows how to prioritise.
Bobby is sad that he won't be working with his son for a while but he is glad Buck is furthering his career and he is joining fire investigation.
Buck is in a store and he is picking out what clothes he can get Chris as he wants his son to have some new things.
Just as Buck is deciding he hears his name and he turns around and it's the officer who saved Chris and Buck thinks what his name could be and he remembers his sergeant calling him Street.
Street walks up to Buck and the man hopes he remembers him.
“Do you remember me?.” Street asks.
“Yes I do thank you for saving my son.” Buck says and he hugs the man.
Street is very shocked as he didn't expect Buck to hug him.
After a few minutes Buck pulls apart and he looks a bit embarrassed.
“How is he?.” Street asks.
“He is alive and he didn't get hurt too badly so that's at least a blessing.” Buck says.
“I'm glad that he survived.” Street says.
“Let me properly introduce myself,I am Jim Street.” Street says.
“I am Evan Buckley but my friends call me Buck.” Buck says.
“Is that a nickname?.” Street asks.
“Yes it is. When I was in the academy there were 3 Evan’s in my class and my last name is Buckley so I decided to shorten that to Buck.” Buck says.
“That's so cool.” Street says.
“Thanks. So is Street a nickname?.” Buck asks.
“No, unfortunately Street is not a nickname. It's my last name.” Street says.
“Not going to lie, it's a strange name.” Buck says.
“Yeah a few people have said that.” Street says.
Buck's phone goes off and he takes it out of his pocket and sees it's Carla.
“I'm sorry I need to take this phone call.” Buck says.
“That's fine. I hope we bump into each other again.” Street says and he walks away.
Street gets out of the shop and he goes to headquarters as he needs to sign a few things.
Once inside headquarters Street heads towards Commander Hicks office.
Street knocks on the door and hears Commander Hicks say enter and he opens the door and walks in.
“Officer Street what can I do for you?.” Commander Hicks asks.
“I'm requesting some time off as I'm not in the right frame of mind to be working.” Street says.
“Ok. Let me grab the paperwork.” Commander Hicks says.
Commander Hicks gets up and he goes to his filing cabinet and pulls out the forms that Street needs to sign and he walks back and sits down at his desk.
“Here are the forms you need to sign and Hondo will receive a copy as he will need it for when your review comes up.” Commander Hicks says.
Street signs the forms and he gets told that he has 3 weeks off and he is also given a card with a therapist's number on it.
After thanking the Commander that's when Street leaves.
