        Some primitive thought, about politics.
        Caesar was not stupid, he had not only the "approval" of ordinary people, but also had supporters among the elites. (even his main opponent in the civil war, at some point, was his "relative")

        History knows many examples when rulers, initially loved by the people, later lost support - due to changing circumstances, or political mistakes.
        For example:
        Charles I (England)
        Nicholas II (Russian Empire)
