Comment on From The Ashes, We Rise

  1. China knows about the virus. 0_o

i love her nightmare. there's so much here to pick apart. and i like how your heroine stood up to him and even poked a finger into his chest and was so damn strong in her convictions... but she was wrong in the end. not many writers do this to their protagonist, especially the female ones, i have noticed!

again, i am still loving how you detail the FEELING and mood of the scene, rather than bogging things down with cold descriptors. idk, maybe it's just me because i have aphantasia, but i prefer this mood writing that grips me in the feels and makes me feel a way over spending paragraphs describing what the clouds look like.

the addition of Oppenheimer stuff at the start was also fun! love a good story that squeezes in the term 'quantum physics'! <3

i also love the moment a hero in a story takes up the mantle and decides to act and start their hero's journey. but i also like how she's still actually trying hard to cope and her depression is still there, but she's acting despite it. i like the touch of her finally sleeping in the bed but smooshing up the comforter in such a way as to mimic her husband in bed with her. i remember when i got divorced i started sleeping with a big pillow next to me (even tho i prefer to sleep alone XD ) - this detail is awesome and i'm so glad to put it in here.

    1. Oh yes, Eva isn’t afraid to speak her mind! A big part of the ‘I was wrong’ will haunt her for a while, too. There’s also a lot of reading between the lines with her father, isn’t there!

I’m glad you’re enjoying the description. I try to put myself in the scene as I write and pull out the most noticeable parts. I’ve always said music and sound plays a major part in emotion, especially in film and games, and enjoy using that (such as the ticking of the clock almost giving you that feeling of dread).

And YES! I love all things nuclear (this weirdo has Chernobyl on her holiday list) so couldn’t pass up an opportunity to drop Oppenheimer in there haha!

Although Eva will pull herself out of bed and start doing the ‘quest’, it won’t be a ‘okay she’s on the road now so forget all else’, but she will still he carrying grief, she will still have nightmares and daymares, and she will still struggle. It’s a long journey for her.

And yes! Just sleeping in their bed is such a small but significant step forwards.

I’m so glad you’re liking it!
