    I've written my thoughts in another comment on this, but there was some real affection between the two imo. But I also believe that was partially due to Lyanna's circumstances: being betrothed to Robert would've scared her, I think, and though we only get very little on her thoughts around it ("Love can't change a man's nature"), I do believe that Robert was never exactly presenting himself that well.

    So, Rhaegar presented an "out" for her from that betrothal, a handsome prince come to sweep her off her feet. But, as it progressed, the affections died, what with Rhaegar's actions leading to the death of Rickard and Brandon, her captivity at the TOJ, etc.
