Oh, I adore this premise! Thank you so much for writing this - I love Sokka and Zuko interaction. I'm also quite trepidatious about what's going to come next. You've mentioned that Zuko's connection to Agni is weaker and I'm sorta terrified that's foreshadowing that his connection is going to break (oof that angst and h/c potential? i can just about taste it) even if not? I still adore me some good strong hurt/comfort. Why do I also get the feeling that Uncle and the Gaang will be running into each other? Looking forward to where this is going! This season 1 Zuko is very well written - his frustration and desperation and most of all that hope about returning home. It's tying him up in knots inside and I love his interaction with Sokka here (and in general with peers his age) because he's now in a situation where his position of Crown Prince doesn't really mean much in terms of power. With other people his whole life, that title has changed how willing people are to push back and what they want from him, but the Gaang see him without all that. I can't wait to see what you're going to write next, thank you so much!
Have you read the series Always Trust Sokka’s Instincts? It’s got a good deal of Sokka and Zuko friendship, Zuko and Gaang friendship, previously-imprisoned!Zuko, angst and hurt/comfort, and just an all-around interesting take on how the show could have gone differently if Zuko was with them from the moment they met, though they do meet very differently in that fic. (There’s more to it than that, but if you haven’t read it before, then I don’t want to give you spoilers)
It’s one of my top ten favorite Atla fics.
I’m bringing it up because your comment made me think of it, and I figured based on some of the things in your comment, it would probably be a fic you’d enjoy.
