It's an interesting inversion that Nick comes out with it first so bluntly, but in retrospect, he always led the way with the right words in the movie: why would this change now? I will point out, though, from the mention of his mother and his apparent fondness of her that he can trust people. He's just not especially vocal about it, and time exists on a premium in the film.
