I know this, but when Aerys visited Dorne, Rhaegar was his only child and heir. It makes sense that he was very overprotective over him too -maybe even far more than he was with Viserys. At this point Rhaella was having miscarriages and stillbirths and if something would happen to Rhaegar the whole dynasty would end.

If he was really overprotective of Rhaegar, wouldn't it be safer to keep him around? And seems that Aerys only started to pay attention to stillbirths in 270 AC.
This might be true, but unfortunately, we don't have enough information to say definite a thing. But in this story; he and Elia had never met -though he knows Oberyn and Ashara.
