Comment on –Warriors of Light– Kingdom Hearts

  1. I'm a little conflicted over Phil's attitude in this chapter. Because it's important for Kairi to get to say and prove that she can fight just as well as anybody else, and her being a girl has nothing to do with anything when it comes to being a hero (Hey, are you listening, KH writing team?). But in-universe, I can't help but have my mind be drawn to when Aqua canonically solo'd both the Ice Colossus and Hades right in front of Phil. And since Phil was uncomfortably aware that Aqua was a woman, you'd think that would have some sense beaten into him. But then again, sexist attitudes in ancient times aren't an enemy easily felled by swinging a key. (Also, I know in the context of THIS story that might have never happened because things are shifted, but it stuck in my mind. Plus, I like having a parallel between Aqua's successor in KH canon learning from Zack's successor in FF canon here).

Beyond that, I feel like I don't have as much to say about this chapter, just because it feels very close to the canon events. Sure, we get to SEE more of the background training that happens before the events, and we get Kairi getting her video-game protagonist physics update, but both of those feel like more of a paste of canon. Which, admittedly, you kinda have to do for Olympus. Wonderland and Deep Jungle don't have nearly the long-running impact on the story as this world does so to keep up with everything that will happen in probably the most-shown world in KH you have to set up all the building blocks now. And hey, sometimes you have to get simpler chapters out of the way to get to more original ones so I'm really looking forward to the next chapter!

    1. So, the truth is… I’m not sure if I want to use Olympus in BBS. On one hand, it’s Olympus and it’s relevant and recurring, plus I like Young Herc and Zack, but on the other hand, BBS Olympus is boring. Like, about as boring as re:Coded and Union X Olympus. Even CoM Olympus is more thematically relevant, and Dark Road has the plot actually progress there, which is very rare for Disney worlds outside of the first game. I’m still debating whether or not I’ll use it when I eventually get to BBS, and in case I don’t, decided not to mention anything from it. If I did, the chapter would probably be a tad bit more interesting.

Yeah, overall it’s a pretty middle of the road chapter, but one I can’t afford to cut like other Disney worlds (you also don’t even need to imagine what it’d be like to cut it, because the KH1 novel did it, making KH2 Olympus the first appearance of that world, which got really awkward at times). On the other hand, the next chapter really isn’t necessary for the plot, but I had some cool ideas for the world so I want to write it.
