"You have to kill them all and take their stuff" is one of the funniest lines in Books of Sorrow and it can be spun into being very sad and tragic very easily, which is doubly cool. The thoughtlessness with which we Guardians deal out death!
I'm working off of the idea that Dornuk is very young, especially in Hive lifespan terms--he was hatched shortly after Crota and Oryx's deaths, which in comparison to some centuries- and millennia-old Hive we encounter in the game is Very Baby. I'm also leaning into Books of Sorrow here, again, in particular the first eight-ish verses + the latter ones penned by Xivu. They have this very odd childlike-old-soul ring to it, and I find it very evocative with the way the Hive are forced to grow up and fend for themselves extremely quickly. He is young and wide-eyed in wonder at the butterflies. He is also an active soldier and has watched multiple people die.
Sav and Immaru loving and caring for each other is the hill I am well prepared to die on!!! I will never get over the character assassination both of them got in SotWitch. But THIS *waves the Immaru chapter of Lucent Tales over my head like a flag* WAS HERE FIRST and she HUGGED HIM TWICE and it was CANON and here is my bastion I shall defend. Aiat.
(You're absolutely right about canon and fanfics and hcs all being fiction and therefore equally valid in the end, I'm just mourning the fact we most likely won't ever see Sav and Immaru hugging on-screen and that is simply a crime against my poor heart.)
