  1. I do love the idea of Dornuk and Mandy becoming friends. Like, with a Ghost and their Risen they are usually soulmates right of the bat (not always, but often), so seeing a friendship form that is Not between a ghost and their risen, not even another light bearer, is interesting! Also, I like it when Ghosts are given more personhood, rather than people (in and out of universe) seeing them as largely just extensions of their light bearers. Witchqueen was good for that.

ANYWAY (ahem). Dornuk continues to be adorable. You have a knack for somehow making the hive seem Cute without shying away from the fact that they kill each other and everyone else on the regular. And that hive philosophy meeting thing honestly just read like A Bunch of Warlocks Having An Uncivil Discussion, which I'm guessing was intentional given the authors note.

    1. I love the idea of their friendship being solely a choice, rather than being to some extent determined by their paracausal bond! And yeah ough Ghost Stories and Lucent Tales are mong my favourite lorebooks precisely for that reason, the extent to which they give Ghosts personhood and agency. TWQ handled that so well too (not only with Fynch and the Hive Ghosts, but also our own Ghost!! he had so many opinions and so much rage!! and that monologue in the final mission as you run to the island, aaah!!), and I swore I wasn’t gonna complain but Season of the Witch dropped the ball on that too 😭

Thank you <33 There is some loveliness to the Hive, some childishness, as you pointed out in one previous comment. I’m captivated by the fact they’re a 5+ billion years old society, high-tech and functioning and complex, while being based entirely on murder, and the ways you *could* be a person in those circumstances, you *could* be an individual with traits and desires and relationships, however brief your existence. There is death and violence and hunger, but also love and friendship and childhood, you know. And when the Light sort of takes that violence and hunger away — things are bound to become a little bit cuter (even though there's still murder).

Oh the philosophy meetings are DEFINITELY like a heated scientific conference among a group of Warlocks. Climbing tables, throwing textbooks, accusing each other of feigning doctorates because How Come Someone So Stupid Could Get A PhD, that sort of thing.
