Was re-reading this, and from what I remember the demon traded the amulet of protection to a mage named Sykes who had cheated and betrayed Burgess, the man who captured Dream. Syke's lover (also Burgess' former lover) broke up with him and stole the amulet on her way out, and without it's protection Sykes was promptly murdered by Burgess. But the original trade by the demon was with Sykes, not Burgess' ex.
This first chapter is heavily based on The Sandman TV series, which is why Choronzon insists that Tanya should be his champion, whereas in the comic book he played the Oldest Game against Dream on his own behalf, without needing a champion.
Ruthven Sykes was cut from the TV series, presumably because his character added nothing to the story and they wanted to streamline it a bit. Therefore, in the TV series, Ethel Cripps (Burgess's former lover) was the one who made the deal with Choronzon in exchange for the amulet of protection.
So yeah, this fic uses elements of both the TV series and the comic book, depending on what I thought would make a better story.
I thought it was very well done. There are some things about it that I actually prefer to the comic book version. On the other hand, there are some things I don't like so much. Swings and roundabouts, I guess.
