I tried to write Serena with a strong moral compass when dealing with things such as SHIELD, the CIA, and her parents, along with believing deeply in loyalty, as you saw she willingly followed Protocol: Foxtrot, like Fury told her. But along with that, remember, she has trust issues from her childhood (which I can get more into later) and she's being manipulated by those she trusts the most.
