Whitebeard definitely does not know he's human. If I end up writing a companion story from the crew's perspective I'll go into more detail on it, but as far as Whitebeard knows, mythical birds are just as smart as humans and have complex emotions like humans. The face that he has a much stronger Haki presence than any other animal is because that's just how phoenixes are. I mean, it's a mythical bird made of fire with healing powers and it is the Grand Line so it's not that much of a stretch.
And Marco definitely does not know either, which makes it harder for anyone to guess. But they'll find out soon!
OH yeah okay that makes much more sense lol. And I would LOVE a companion fic from the crew’s perspective!!! (No pressure there tho of course) Also I forgot to mention it but as much as I absolutely love the image of Marco eating the curry and being Lost In The Sauce (and it getting everywhere lol) my favorite part of that is actually imagining him trying to get BACK to the sauce while Whitebeard is (very gently) holding him back from it.
