    I love this…I honestly cannot pat Sally on the back for choosing his physical safety over his mental and emotional wellbeing, because …well…monsters or gods either kill you or they don’t …but it is quick and then you go to asphodel or elysium… Yet the damage, the emotional wounds from abuse linger and follow Percy throughout the books…his low self esteem, his occasional suicidal feelings…the way he puts up with the ostracisation and never sets up proper boundaries because everyone in the divine world treats him better than Gabe so he can put up with it…his relationship with Annabeth is such a toxic mess where he lets her assault and threaten him for getting kidnapped and mindwiped and just laughs it off…the way he is ready to die of poison underwater because he can’t muster the will to live after scaring Annabeth and does not want to break his stupid promise to her to save his life…

      Sally’s choices become 100 times worse when you realize Poseidon offered to let Sally her life with him in Atlantis and Sally refused saying she didn’t want Poseidon to take care of her or Percy. Percy would have been safe from so much if she let Poseidon protect them.

      And you are so right about Annabeth, Percy puts up with a lot of abuse because Sally put him in so many abusive and dangerous situations.

      To the author:
      Major kudos for writing this kind of a story. Very few people criticize Sally and her actions. Also I read your endnote it is confirmed in the books that Gabe will ‘punch Percy’s lights out’ if he tells his mom about what he’s doing. So yeah Gabe is willing to knock Percy unconscious.

        It’s something that gnaws on me as well.
        I understand going: I don’t want the castle, I want freedom.
        What I don’t understand: Smelly Abusive Gabe never her more freedom or happiness than what Poseidon was willing to giver her. She had to know that. And still, she chose Gabe.

        Thank you!!! I’ve read a lot of fics in this fandom and I felt this kind of fic was missing which made me itch to write it.

        I can kind of understand why few people criticize Sally and her actions. The primary reason being Percy. But you’d think people would be well aware Percy is an unreliable narrator yk? Sigh, critical analysis come back to us pls lol

      And well put Op! Percy’s emotional trauma that he faces and the consequences are heavily shown in the series as you’ve pointed out in this comment. From what I remember they were never quite addressed tho but then again it’s been a long time since I’ve read the books so I could be inaccurate with that statement. Also so interesting on the point about the divine relationships in regard to Gabe’s influence/damage! I’ve never thought about that before!

      Ooooo his relationship with Annabeth. Hm. I remember having really mixed feelings about it as a kid. Mostly confusion in the Olympian books but I was like seven so eh. And then HOO I just straight up did not like their relationship. Felt like it shifted into it’s girlboss to be mean to your bf territory. The top example the infamous judo flip as you commented haha. I definitely plan to reread all the off PJO and HOO books soon to reevaluate my stance on their relationship.
