Comment on A Winter Lion

  1. Hey so 1. Ned knew Jon was trueborn because Lyanna named him Aegon Targaryen, which means, based on their laws, Jon had to be trueborn, which can only happen if they are married. That is further proven by how he never tells Jon who his mother was. Only saying he would after Jon would have already taken his vows and he would no longer be able to press his claim. We see Ned go over Jon a couple of times when he agrees to marry Sansa to Joffrey, knowing Joffrey wasn't the right heir, because it was Jon. Then again when he fights to name Stannis the heir.

    2. The rebellion started based on the lie. Yes, the mad King helped, but the only reason Ned's brother and father went to the Red Keep was to demand Rhaegar's head and Lyanna back, that resulted in their death, which kick started the Rebellion. If the lie never happened, no rebellion against Rhaegar. Instead the Council would have happened to remove the King and crown Rhaegar.

    3. Even with Ned not knowing Joffrey's true birth, he still went against Jon to marry Sansa to him. Again, he knew from the moment Jon was placed in his arms he was a Targaryen, that his sister had been married to Rhaegar and not kidnapped or raped. A lie he never looks into and just ignores. And when he does find out about Joffrey he goes to Stannis, instead of Jon, when at that point Jon might not have said his vows and he could have told Jon the truth.

Now, this story is based on the show, because I have not read the books. It might be different, assuming the books ever show up, in the books, but this is off the show and we saw Ned knowing Jon's full name and what it means. He made his decisions with that in mind and was constantly pushing Jon to the side in favor of his friend and his children. It's why I said that Ned loves Jon, but he doesn't love him at the same level of his children. And that can easily be because of what is wrapped around Jon's birth and all of the loss Ned suffered from it. I don't think Ned is a horrible person. I have another story where he is amazing with Jon. I wanted to write him differently here, like a lot of the other characters, because I wanted to write a different type of story. One where Jon is more surrounded by the Lannisters and what that could have been like over the Starks.

    1. Fair enough I hoped I didn't sound too disrespectful in my comments. I'm glad Jon isn't named Aegon here since that kind of makes both Lyanna and Rhaegar a bit assholery given the previous Aegon and intention to cast Elia and her children aside while using Dornish troops to fight in their war. Although given Robert took it by conquest if Ned followed that logic then Stannis would be the heir.
