In my head I’ve always pictured Robert as someone always capable of making that change, just that he needed the right people around him. So, for instance, Robert didn’t have a chance at self improvement in canon being married to Cersei/Lannisters at court/Ned not at his side (not that it excuses anything he did, though).
In this fic, I’ve basically tried to find ways in which Robert has *something* to urge him on. So people, and that conversation with Lyanna at Harrenhal.
And yeah, I really enjoyed seeing how I could play around with Robert’s headspace with the rebellion. We know for certain Ned suffers extremely for that experience, and I thought to build upon the hints we get in canon that Robert is as well.
