  1. A stick figure wearing a feathered hat and a rapier, walking with a smile on his face

A load off my mind that Athos and Grimaud are not on their own! It was also very amusing, in my relief, to read about the way in which d'Artagnan freed himself from serving the king. It is very wholesome to read about the deep friendship between him and Athos that has lasted for decades, unconditional and willing to make sacrifices when it counts.
Of course, I don't remember de Guiche at all, but it speaks for your talent and skill that your text immediately makes him seem familiar and likeable to me. Also interesting, he's missing two fingers, and no, I really don't remember when and why, but now I'd like to know. It's entirely down to you that this secondary character has won me over, I think I didn't care about him in the original, otherwise I'd be able to remember him.
My concern for Raoul is growing, what has happened to him? The fact that no ransom is demanded either foreshadows bad things or unexpected good things. Ha, perhaps he has found a beautiful advocate in captivity in Spain and can finally free himself from his pain for Louise! He really doesn't have to follow in his father's footsteps in every respect and deserves love without drama.
I'm very curious to see how it continues, how many chapters do you think the story will have?

    1. Thank you once again, Maren, you're the best! ♥
As for de Guiche, maybe you will remember him from the second book better than the third. In "20 Years After", de Guiche is that guy Raoul saves from drowning while traveling to the army. They go to war together and become good friends. In the third book, de Guiche has a whole plot about falling in love with the king's sister-in-law, in which he sometimes acts like a complete idiot, but still lovable idiot, at least to me ;) And he still remains a good friend to Raoul, and even fights a pistol duel with de Wardes Jr. for absent Raoul's honor. That's how he loses those two fingers.
I'm planning about 20 chapters, and as for today, I have the first 10 more or less complete (as in: they still need some editing, but most of the content is already there).
