You touched on a point that I always thought was shitty that it wasn't addressed in the book, like, Rick hinted at the punches, but that was it, it's like he only hit Percy when he talked too much... But Gabe is a violent DRUNK, so he can't be trusted with a plant, let alone a child.
The hatred that Percy has for him in the books doesn't seem to be just due to the mental abuse, but also physical abuse, and Riordan not developing this in a universe where titans, gods, and primordials rise up and act like violent jerks was a mistake. Like, the anger that Percy feels towards Ares is due to lies and manipulation, but it could have added fuel to the fire if Percy reacted even more negatively against him when he found out about the threat he made to Clarisse, because he was a violent man punishing his daughter for something that was not in her hands.
I love Sally so much, but I understand your point of view on this matter and I can't blame her, but I'm not going to brush it off either and I can't blame her, but I'm not going to brush it off either.
Despite everything, she wanted to protect Pecy, the problem is that the weapons they put in her hands were an arrow without the bow, the sheath of a sword and a shield that would break at any moment. The arrow is the half-blood camp, but by putting it there, she wouldn't have as much contact with it, since the descent would become public and I don't think the mortal world would be safe from the wrath of Zeus or Hades; the sheath of the sword would be her praying to Poseidon and attracting the attention of the king of the heavens and resulting in the possible death of her and Percy (an example of this is what happened to Maria), and Gabe is the shield that would break at any moment and when it did, it was fatal.
However, as I said, I'm not going to cover it up.
I understand that she did everything she could to protect Percy from her own way, but she made a mistake there, she didn't protect Percy from his own ignorance. Sally ignored the signs and Gabe's own response, he didn't deny it or imply that he was cheating on him, he made it clear with the "what if I did that?" For me this was the end of it. Sally got caught up in the "If I kill him, Percy will be in danger" and not in the "his smell has filled this apartment, so there's time to eliminate the threat now and think of something before the smell goes away." Geez, the book makes it clear that Percy goes to boarding school!!! He spends his vacations with his mother and then spends the rest of the year studying and avoiding monsters!! That pig's smell was so disgusting that she could have thought of something else after getting rid of him!! But she chose ignorance, she chose not to believe!!!
I love Sally and it hurt to read that she chose to be ignorant, but narratively she made a mistake, she caused suffering to her son and herself, she thought she was keeping her son safe from the mythological monsters, but she didn't look at the wolf she placed inside her house with her baby son.

Yes thank you! It was always interesting to me how Riordan handled such a heavy topic while at the same time somewhat subverting it!
Such an excellent point about Gabe’s abuse affecting how Percy could’ve seen Ares! Especially with regards to Clarisse.
Oh I adore Sally too. I understand her actions and that she was put into an incredibly difficult situation with seemingly no way out. That I can understand. However, her reasoning for it all is a selfish one. When she explains it to Percy she repeatedly states how she kept him close because she couldn’t bare the thought of losing him. Of being far from him. Which is lowkey funny to me considering she already sends him off to boarding school for most of the year but I digress.
The wolf she placed inside her house is an excellent way to sum it up. I adore the painful accuracy :,,)
Thank you so much for taking the time to write out this thoughtful comment! <3
