At last, a sign of life from Raoul! Only for us readers, but the change of perspective was appropriate. Introducing Amélie in this chapter is a good move. Yes, Raoul voluntarily stays alive a little longer, because even though he has placed the responsibility for himself in God's hands, the responsibility for a little girl weighs more heavily. I wasn't entirely wrong in a previous review when I said that Raoul had probably found a new girl to forget his pain, LOL! I like Amelie because she belts out such unsubtle songs and isn't stupid, without being precocious and annoying. Maybe she's previously been taught how to behave when she's kidnapped? It wouldn't be far-fetched for a father to take precautions if he is forced to take his daughter with him to a crisis area. However, I also wonder how she really ended up in captivity. Maybe we'll find out more in later chapters. Maybe there's more to it and to her than we and Raoul learn in this scene. (I wouldn't be surprised if she isn't the adjutant's daughter at all, but is supposed to pretend to be while in captivity, because it would be even more dangerous if her true identity were revealed. Oh, I just like speculating too much, don't put too much stock in it!) The only question that remains is where we are in the timeline. It could be parallel, since apparently no one knows who Raoul really is and therefore no ransom demand could be made to Athos yet, only the news of his capture. But I think we are more likely to be a few weeks before Athos and d'Artagnan spoke in the prologue. What is true?
Thank you! Haha, you were totally right about the girl, even though I suspect you thought about someone a bit older :D But in all seriousness, I was pondering over what could make Raoul want to stay alive. A new romance in my opinion would be completely out of character for him. Then I realized that many years earlier Athos was saved by becoming a father, and what worked for him, could also work for his son, who inherited a lot of his traits. I couldn't believably give Raoul his own child, but placing a little, innocent girl temporarily in his care seemed like a pretty plausible move to make him stop thinking about dying here and now :) As for the timelines, no, the two storylines aren't really parallel at this point. Since Raoul has just been captured, the last chapter takes place some time before the previous chapters. They will progress each at their own speed, but they will eventually meet. Or at least I hope they will, as I haven't written that part yet :D
