I grimaced a lot during the chapter, simply because you describe the situation so well - and mercilessly - that the reader can't help but empathize. I'm now really scared for Amélie and Raoul. They may be worth more alive than dead, but unharmed in body and life doesn't mean unharmed in soul. When Raoul asks for the name of their English/Irish keeper, he reminded me of Athos. That's a typical la Fère manner, always politely asking the other person's name, I had to smile. At the same time, it's not just pure politeness, but a ruse. Yes, cunning does not necessarily go hand in hand with knightly honor. But just as centuries earlier in the Arthus saga, the knight Cain can only assert himself through cunning and not physical strength, Raoul also has to resort to it in his current situation. In fact, d'Artagnan and Aramis would have no qualms about it at all, and since they are clearly in the majority, Athos must reluctantly give in as the voice of conscience in Raoul's head. Great chapter, as always!
